In Mexico at an opening season tournament. We beat Nebraska 12-1 with #1 Oklahoma up next.

Scott was too gentle. BYU beat Nebraska in Nebraska's season opener. Does that sound familiar? ;-) 12-1 in five innings.

But did beat #12 Washington 4-2. Hopefully those rankings are accurate and portend many wins over good teams ... like #2 Auburn tomorrow.



After all, Washington just beat Auburn, and Nebraska only lost to Auburn by one.

Won 3 games today. We are now 5-2 and ranked #25.

Beat #11 Georgia today and lost to #9 Arizona.

Won the WCC yesterday. My daughter caught a foul ball and had the whole team sign it.



They've given up one run this year in league play. That's kind of amazing. I think they'll be awesome in the playoffs. McKenna Bull looked unhittable.

We open against MSU on the 18th on ESPN3. We beat the Utes earlier this year. We have a great shot at advancing.



Mississippi State Bulldogs (36-20, 10-14 SEC)

• The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 36-20 record, including a 10-14 record in the SEC. They were a No. 9 seed in the SEC tournament, losing in the opening round to Ole MIss, who went on to win the tournament championship.

• BYU has a 1-2 series record against Mississippi State. The last time these two teams faced was in 2012 in NCAA Regionals, which the Cougars won 4-3 in nine innings.



No. 11 Utah Utes (33-14, 13-9 Pac-12)

• The Utes finished in fifth in the Pac-12, struggling as of late after getting swept at home against Washington.

• BYU and Utah faced earlier this season in Provo with the Cougars winning 4-3. Libby Sugg hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the team to an upset win.

• The Cougars lead the all-time series 33-17, including a 13-10 mark on the road. In 2016, BYU played at Utah and won 5-4.



Fordham Rams (45-15, 18-5 Atlantic 10)

• The Rams finished the season strong, winning the Atlantic 10 championship after already winning the regular-season title.

• BYU has played Fordham just once previously, winning 5-2 back in 2014 in the Mary Nutter Classic.

Lost 14-0. Their worst loss since 2012. Season-high in hits and runs allowed.

That's pathetic. More runs given up in one game than just about the entire WCC season.

Unfortunately, a 14-0 drubbing is slightly worse than a newspaper tap. But, yes, BYU does seem to flounder when it comes to Utah.

I think they just simply ran out of gas. They played them tough the first game and destroyed both the other teams in the regional. And they beat Utah earlier in the year. By the time they got to the second game against Utah, they just had nothing left in the tank.

Just like every sport. BYU can't finish and hasn't been able to for years.
