This is what you get for being a white reciever in the NFL that catches passes from arguably the greatest QB in NFL history and comes from a non BCS conference.



EDIT: also I am taking nothing away from Percy Harvin who has had a terrific Rookie season.

i read your disclaimer re race,but really what does Austin"s whiteness have to do with not getting votes for the ROY? i dont understand the point you're trying to make?are you suggesting that you have to be African-American to receive votes as a receiver?if so i think that's pretty odd logic.i'm a little more on-board with your assertion that he's being overlooked as an ex-cougar,although i think that"s even a stretch given the ex-cougs who've won awards in the NFL.

Because he is playing a position dominated by African americans. That is why I put in the disclaimer.

sooooo,if he came from non-BCS school and was African American,and was Peyton's target all of his rookie season he would have stood a better chance of getting votes?

I haven't seen Michael Oher play much this season (haven't watched many Ravens games).



Is he deserving of the second highest votes?



I've seen the movie three times (my wife and I went, then I had private movies days with two of my boys and they each chose blind side). I wonder how his team mates and other players view him and the movie's success.

no i'm not but i don't see how the whole race thing should even have ever been part of the discussion and that if such an assertion is made then it should be defensible.i know that i'm a newbie to this board,but i've been reading your posts for a long time with interest,on the other site, and this is the first one where i don't understand where you're coming from.i don't think there is reverse discrimination in the media against white guys.

What I was trying to say is that Austin Collie had one of the best rookie years in the NFL this year. He should have gotten some consideration (a vote or 2). Percy Harvin had a great year and is deserving of the award but Collie, statistically, had just as good a year (if you remove the factor of being a return guy from Harvin's stats). A combination of the 3 things I mentioned above was probably why a guy like Austin got COMPELETLY overlooked in the voting.

i agree with that 100%.i think that even on his own team Garcon,who was in reality a rookie although not actually, got lots more love from the media. from the few games that i saw,the clips of Austin's catches were more workman- like,more ball control type catches and not the more glamorous over the top long balls that Garcon was catching.that said Austin brought what i think most of us thought he would to the NFL,professionalism and hard work and should have been considered more for the award than he was.he was outstanding.

Rookie of the Year has always been given to the player with the most face time. Never has the Rookie of the Year award been given to a lineman and yet Michael Oher gets enough votes for number 2 this year and I suspect it is due largely to the movie The Blind Side.

Austin Collie probably didn't deserve the award but the fact that he didn't get any votes proves that he is one of the most underrated receivers in football. He fits perfectly in the Colts offense and I expect big things out of him in the coming years.

I think there are several reasons why Collie didn't receive any votes. I'll focus on a few.



1. He plays on the Colts and is the 3rd option on the team. His stats were more consitant than Garcon's (who was the 4th option behind the TE and other WR and Collie), but not as flashy. Notice how as the year went on, Garcon didn't get the same pub. Other than Peyton Manning, no one gets too much individual attention in Indy.



2. He is currently not a kick/punt returner and thus doesn't have the opportunity for the instant ESPN highlight.



3. He's from a non-BCS conference. Not always a concern, but he wasn't exactly Randy Moss (from Marshall via Florida St).



4. Simple name recognition. Honestly, do you think Michael Oher would have gotten the votes he did without the recent publicity.



Yeah, he should have gotten a few votes. I think he had as many TDs as any of the WRs that were listed. Fact is, he's a more talented and younger Wes Welker.

You really don't think there's reverse discrimination in professional and even college sports? What about every time they call a white player "deceptively quick" or just lump the really athletic ones into a category of having a "great work ethic". How often do you hear those things about African American players? Almost never. It's a virtually verifiable fact that the NFL in general thinks white players make better QBs and other "non-skill" positions and African American players are better at WR, CB, RB, etc. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying you'd have to be pretty ignorant to not be able to see how there are racial stereotypes in the NFL and other sports as well favoring athletes of differing race depending on the sport. Little by little those stereotypes are being broken down I believe but you'd be pretty naive to think they don't exist in some fashion currently.

Can we get rid of the term "reverse discrimination" There really is no such thing, it's ALL descrimination no mater which way it is going.

If I were an unbiased AP voter that didn't actually watch football games and just looked at stats, this is how I would rank my votes:



1 - Percy Harvin

2 - Austin Collie



Its not surprising to me that he didn't get any votes (although it would seem that someone close to the Indy program would recognize that he is probably better than Harvin). What is surprising is the fact that Maclin, Moreno, and Wallace got any votes. Oher's votes came because of the movie (which is a dumb way to vote in my opinion). I don't think it says that Collie was the 5th best rookie. I think there are many who would have voted for Collie had Harvin been a flop this year.

Its all about flash and face time. I have been trolling a couple Colts Fan Forums all season long. I read comments from fans you list their favorite players in the game and then 3 or 4 pages into the thread, someone brings up... "ummm did anyone notice Collie's 76 yards???" (or something to that effect) Then everyone else jumps in... "YEAH Collie is amazing,and very dependable, best value Colts have gotten in draft for ages...etc"



It's true, he gets his work done and quietly so. So his stat lines will jump out and smack you in the face but you won't see him making ESPN's Ton 10 very often.

It also has to do with his position on the field. Collie gets his catches but he is hardly Manning's first read. He just doesn't get the ball forced in to him like other receivers who line up outside do.

But, whatever, I have loved seeing Collie excel in his rookie year. First season I have watched the NFL in ages.





Collie > Garcon

Another perfect example of discrimination towards whites in sports was evident in the Alabama/Texas game tonight. Brent Nosebooger said that Jordan Shipley had "a bright career ahead of him as a slot receiver in the NFL" to which Kirk Herbstreit replied, "He's going to make another great Wes Welker." I just love how of all the receivers in the NFL, the only one they can think of to compare him to is one of the three white guys (Welker, Collie, D. Andersen).



Jordan Shipley is light years faster than Wes Welker and was consistently getting behind defenses all year, even the vaunted Alabama defense tonight. Not to mention he was the only guy the Horns' new QB was throwing to and they still couldn't stop him. But folks still actually believe that a white kid couldn't possibly have the speed to play on the outside.
