We're all UDub fans tomorrow

As I was saying in another thread, especially with the bye we should all be Washington fans this week. My worst fear is that Utah will beat the #5 team in the nation with College Game Day there, shoot up the rankings, and manage to win out the rest of the way in the PAC 12. With their loss to Cal, I don't think they'll get in the playoffs but the Rose Bowl is a strong possibility. And the last thing we need to hear is stinking Ute fans talking about how they've made it to the Fiesta, Sugar and Rose Bowls over the past 12 years. I really hope Chris Petersen can work his magic and embarrass Utah the way Gary Patterson and TCU did in 2010.

BYU being excluded from the P5 for political reasons drives me nuts, knowing that we have to play at a financial and recruiting disadvantage. But having lived in Washington for the last 10 years I feel justified in having UW as my designated P5 team. I also have a soft spot for Peterson from back when he was the underdog with Boise State (I really think we in the old MWC made a mistake in not inviting them a couple years sooner).



On an unrelated topic, I can't stand Utah's ever changing unis. I'll see pictures or highlight clips and I think "I wonder who that team is?" Your unis should be instantly recognizable and I feel like theirs look completely different every week, and none looks good.

Think of what could have been. If in the summer of 2010, Hair and the MWC were proactive and added Boise St, perhaps they could have reached out to Kansas St and Kansas and grabbed them.



Remember, Nebraska was leaving for the Big Ten, Missouri and Texas A&M leaving for the SEC and Oklahoma Texas, Oklahoma St and Baylor were all talking about maybe going to the PAC 10.



Maybe Kansas St and Kansas could have added to the instability of the Big XII. Think of how great a sports conference this could have been.

That's a solid football conference (there are 4-5 perennially ranked teams there). That's a great basketball conference. That's a very good track and field, cross country, soccer and other sports conference.

Don't worry yourselves over the result of the UWvsutes game. This Huskies team is as good as I have ever seen them. Their defense is fantastic and that offense is lethal. The Huskies have been my 2nd favorite team since I went on my mission to Washington in 1990. The Huskies shared the NC with Miami in 91 and that 91 team had one of the best college defenses I have ever seen. This years Husky team has a defense like that one and a better offense. utah is going to get pummeled.

For me, I will always cheer for BYU and for WHATEVER outcome improves the BYU brand and others' (legitimate football critics', that is) perception of Cougar football.



I could not have written this 5 years ago. But I've gotten mellow in my old age. And I am really tired of how the silly (stupid, maybe?) antics of the few prideful and hateful fans have tarnished a once awesome rivalry. So I hope Utah wins.



What will it take for fans on both sides to wash the ugly taste out of their mouth? The offering of an olive branch? And who goes first? What would happen if BYU bought temporary advertising space on a billboard in Salt Lake that congratulates the Utes should they win today? What would all your Ute friends at work say? I know, the real dicks would put a 'weak' or 'religious' spin on it (and then we offer our left cheek, right?), but many might be a little impressed and may not have a need to boast. Don't people boast when they think they aren't getting the credit they deserve?

If I were a fan of the Huskies I'd be cheering for Washington with all my energy. But I'm not. And I'm choosing to not be a Husky fan today just because they're playing Utah.



And honestly, if you were talking to anyone who's not affiliated with Utah, wouldn't you like to say that three of our four losses, were to top 10 teams, and we almost beat every one of them? Honestly, don't you already say that to people who work for your company in another state!



I'm not trying to change anyone at all. Just sharing. Sorry to deflate.



But we want them to be less caustic. They want us to be less arrogant.

I totally see your reasoning and I think your feeling is commendable. I wish I could let bygones be bygones and be the first one to reach out a hand of kindness.



But I just can't. It's a personal failing, but cheering for Utah in any capacity makes me feel physically ill.

No feeling bad about it. Cheering for W today. Washington wins - I don't see any downside.

Screw that. You can't be a BYU fan and root for Utah. And I shouldn't have to explain why.

Giving credit where it's due, Utah put up a heck of a fight. But soooooo glad Washington pulled out the win. :D

There is no such thing as a moral victory. Glad the huskies won today even if I weren't a fan of them.

Luckily the bond borne from being BYU fans transcends the little uniqunesses that give us our individuality.



I can't wait to make some chili, and join my great friends and watch BYU play Clemson. We'll have to delay it by 1.5 hours so we can participate in the "Teaching in the Savior's Way" world-wide training event. But then we can skip commercials and half-time.



I will hold out hope that somewhere out there there is a bishop or relief society president who is a die-hard Ute fan.... who maybe even has a little grudge because their son or daughter didn't get in to BYU (the institution that granted me a Masters and a Doctor of Philosophy degree, and where my son is now a freshman), and who quietly cheers for BYU next year when the cougars are doing great.

I will give them credit when due, but not going to cheer for them to win, when winning would increase their in-state recruiting.

And then BSU lost to Wyoming today.

Toledo lost too. Both undefeated losses went down today.

We are 4-4. And we're worried about how our opponents did so as to somehow validate our wins/losses?

I was willing to root for the conference back when we were in the same conference. BYU and Utah were fierce on the field, but the schools worked really closely with one another. When Utah beat Pitt and then Alabama in BCS bowls, I dreaded the smack talk that was going to follow, but as a MWC fan I enjoyed it to some degree.



Then Utah ditched us in the MWC and were nasty towards us when it came to scheduling. It also gave their worst fans license to kick it up a notch.



Utah winning would not have raised BYU's stature. What, was Kalani going to go into a recruits home and say "sure we lost 4 games, but 3 of the 4 were to teams in the top 15." Then KWhit will go in and say "We were a top 15 team." Utah winning could hurt BYU in recruiting battles. Washington winning doesn't hurt BYU at all.
