yup. To me that says a lot.

It's pretty obvious that this is the worst performing group of receivers BYU has ever fielded (yes, a touch of hyperbole). Ben Cahoon is so gifted at making impossible catches that he has no idea how to teach how to catch at all, because to him it's just something you do. How would you teach someone to breath? Or wiggle their ears?

I'm glad to see Cody stand up like that. I'm pleased to believe that, at least most of the posts here have been critical of the team ... noting Taysom's mistakes, hammering on receivers (a good game there would have lead to an entirely different outcome), pointing out defensive errors, etc.

I thought it was pretty obvious last night that Scott D. Pierce greased our pink gloves with vasoline last night so that our wide receivers would play like a bunch of sissies.

Funny. WRs that couldn't catch balls thrown by Heaps or Nelson could magically catch again once Christian Stewart was put in.

2014 when Christian Stewart was qb, we were playing with a newish receiver coach (Holliday) and I can't remember a lot of drops when Taysom was qb that year before he got off to a 4-0 start and a broken ankle.



a lot happened between heaps/Nelson and stewart. maybe you were thinking of Lark, mars?



14-15 had some good BYU receivers (qbs = hill, stewart and mangum). Hard to tell if the receivers were just more talented or Holliday actually was that much better a position coach.

You may be right. Either way, it seems easier to catch balls not thrown low and behind you, over your head, or fastball-hard from 7 yards away.

True. But when it hits you in the mitts and you have a open field in front of you to the endzone, but some CB bats the ball away in a last ditch effort as he flied by.... that sucks too.



I'm not saying Taysom is the most accurate guy out there. But he's not the only problem the offense has.

I think it's funny that since Heaps was a lousy QB, that now every time a ball is dropped BYU fans have to now blame the QB. I'm not seeing a lot of dropped balls that were similar to the Heaps drops this year. I'm seeing a lot of balls hitting guys in the numbers or in the hands that are being dropped. I'm seeing a lot of receivers running bad routs that make balls look like they are poorly thrown, I'm seeing a lot of defenders blowing up the offensive line and in the QB's face before he even has a second to survey the field. Yes, Taysom is not perfect but the offense as a whole needs a lot of work, and frankly, it starts with the offensive line which was terrible in the Boise game.

Yes, there have been lots of flat out drops, but I'm also seeing a lot of balls that yes the WRs are getting a hand on, but they are no where close to hitting them on the numbers. A WR is running to the right, ball gets thrown behind him, WR contorts his body to get a hand on it and "drops" it. Yes, this is potentially the worse group or performance of WRs that I can remember, but the QB is not helping. I seriously LOL when I hear someone mention Hill and the draft. Not. Going. To. Happen. But then again if Heaps can get onto a practice squad then anything can happen...

Hill may not get drafted but it will have a lot more to do with his age than his talent level. A lot of the bad throws are due to receivers breaking the wrong way. Watch AFR, they point it out every time. Once again, Hill is not perfect but there is a lot of bad looking throws because the QB and the receivers are still not on the same page, probably due to the new offense.

Age is only the start.

He locks onto receivers and is easy to defend by D backfields

He is not decisive in his decision making and holds onto the ball too long (this could also be a poor WR problem)

And his greatest asset is hobbled by injuries. His amazing speed is now merely average.

Even still, Frdbtr is right. He's good enough for our O. Not prefect. But the WRs are responsible for a considerable amount of offensive inneficiency.

I don't know that I can agree. It certainly does look like that based on how well the guys are covered when the pass gets there. I think that is primarily a receiver-failing-to-get-separation problem. Watch TH, you can see him go through his progressions (when he has time). I'd say he has 2 primary problems ... 1) He waits until the receiver is open to throw (which means they are probably covered when the ball gets there) ... so he's waited too long (which actually sounds more like a trust issue: he doesn't trust the receivers to get open); and 2) he hasn't figured out how to put proper touch on the ball (think of the bullet he hit Squally with in the BSU game ... if SC hadn't caught it, it would have been buried in his chest!) Touch is tough to learn. There are a lot of guys who never learn it. But it can also be a symptom of stress, frustration, and lack of time. Not all problems are the receivers and line, but when those two pieces of the puzzle looked good, so did TH, or at least he looked a LOT better.
