Confirming that rumor would put the crown on a promising off-season. That guy minimized BYU offense to the point it almost hurt. Not only is he conservative and highly predictable on offense, he takes minimal risk, which, if he does, usually results in dilemma. A shame to what BYU offense stands and is known for. If I hear one more time how terrific BYU is on 3rd down I am going to throw up. Anybody realize that our 3rd down conversion is among the highest in FBS because we SUCK on 1st and 2nd down? How about being the nation's leading 2nd AND 3rd down conversion team?

And lastly (this applies to Bronco as well) we play College Football in the MWC... not NFL, not BCS- running up the score when you can is part of becoming a national powerhouse.

Trashing BYU's third down conversion rate because we don't get it on first or second down makes no sense. Anae did a solid job with the assets we had this year. I hope he stays. If he does not I wish him the best and am sure we can bring in someone who will do the job. But to trash the man because he did not call razzle dazzle and throw the bomb every other play is just so off base....

I am not trashing BYU's 3rd down conversion, I realize it's the best in College Football- I am saying though that more needs to be donw on the fisrt two downs and that Anae is very limited in the options of plays he calls. Having said that, I like the guy, I've spoken with him and I want nothing but the best for him.

Anae isn't perfect, but he is solid. We've won 10+ games in a row for 4 years under him, a first at BYU.

Ok, teams don't get 50%+ 3rd down conversion rates because they suck on 1st and 2nd down. That just isn't logical. 3rd and 10 or longer is too difficult to pick up consistantly.

Your analysis of third down conversion rate makes no sense. It's a rate, not a quantification.

If BYU converts 5/10 third down conversions on the season, the convert 50%. If they convert 500,000/1,000,000 on the season, they convert 50%. What they convert on first and second down has zilch to do with what they convert on third down. Do you have any statistics to back up your claim that BYU ranks poorly in first- or second-down conversions rates (stats I have never seen before)?

If anything, a good third-down conversion rate is indicative of success on first and second down. You are more likely to convert on third-and-short than third and long, so if anything, a high third-down-conversion rate works against your criticism.

Point taken- I have no stats, I've only heard a mention of it, other than that you're exactly right. Still beside the point that BYU is not doing on offense what we should do and are capable of. Like I said, I like Anae, he is by no means bad, but I simply expect more from a BYU offense, we should be lighting up opponents endzones.

My only criticism of Anae is in-game adjustments. I think he has a very successful, prolific offense, but when his scripted game-plan bogs down, he has not shown the ability to successfully go off script.

He gets by against inferior teams, but when a good defense stymies his initial plan, the game is over for BYU offensively.

When has BYU's offense ever been as efficient as it is right now? What do you expect from him?

This would seem to me to be the only really fair criticism of Anae. I've noticed this too. That said he still only has 5 years as an OC and has arguably improved every year. Not to mention, he's a fantastic teacher. Most criticism of Anae is unfounded. Nobody is perfect, especially when playing against good teams.

I don't think we've lost any games really that we should have won during the Bronco/Anae reign except for the Tulsa, FSU, and '08 'Zona games. But I would argue neither of those games were a problem with the offense. You could make a case for the '08 puke and TCU games but those teams were both very good even though I think if we were playing our best game we could have beat them.

There went my thunder. Almost word-for-word what I was going to say. I would add, he has shown some real lapses in judgment in late-game play calling, with the game on the line (especially against he ewets). That being said, I have seen real growth in his game calling overall, just as long as he doesn't have to make too many in-game adjustments.

I don't think we gain anything losing him. In fact, I think we go backward. It will take a couple of years for a new coordinator to find out what he has, and to get the players he does have on the same page as him.

In short, Anae is a good coordinator. Great? Probably not, but it is hard to argue with 4 straight 10-win seasons. I hope he stays, and I hope he does get just a little more aggressive, or at least adds more fakes and deception into the mix. I'm calling way too many plays from the comfort of my seat, and that makes me a little uncomfortable ;) .

I agree with this completely.

Take the New Mexico game for instance. The week before we played New Mexico, the yewts played them. All they they did against them was rack up 251 rushing yards. Wide 20/145 7.3 ypc, Shakerin 16/100 6.3 ypc. Then we play them a week later, and we dont really even run the ball.

Unga 11/50 4.5 ypc, and jj 3/13 4.3 ypc. I know that Unga was a little banged up, but we have other running backs that could run up and down the field on those guys. We just kept trying to throw the ball. Sometimes Anae needs to believe that running the ball will open up the passing game.

Anae, I hope you stay as long as you want! ... (within reason)

If we lose Anae, I want either the Texas Tech OC or the Boise State OC. And if Anae stays, he needs to go study both of these teams...especially BSU, because they have a very smart and aggressive mentality. BSU is not crazy aggressive, they just know exactly when to fake the punt, and to do it in a way that is near certain to succeed. The fact they nearly always got some receiver open when they really needed to get a first down, was impressive to me. Anae needs to take lessons from BSU.

And Hill needs to take lessons from BSU also. It isn't the scheme, it isn't the players, it's just a brilliant, slightly off kilter approach to both offense and defense. It's what I've always said, you have to do the unexpected--a certain percentage of the time, and it must be done at the right time, so the surprise is really there.

The Texas Tech O coordinator was...Mike Leach. for he bowl game, the interim coach had the 26 year old WR coach call the plays. His first game ever. So I want nothing TT has to offer. As to the BSU OC, not sure we would pay him as much as BSU does, and it is a lateral hire, so no way the guys leaves. So either would promote Doman, and get a successful OC from the I-AA ranks. Worked for Oregon.

What I don't like about Anae are the following: the lack of in-game adjustments (which has been talked about), the lack of diversity (i.e. more boot legs, screens, lining up in I formation more and not just running from that formation, some trick plays, etc) and not using all of his weapons. If he is our offensive coordinator next year and doesn't use Riley Nelson in some capacity I will be fuming.

With all that being said he has been far more than serviceable especially since he hasn't been an offensive coordinator for very long. He has been good but obviously has a lot to improve on and I hope he sees that and gets better.

Under Robert Anae, BYU has won 10+ games 4 years in a row, seen two of the top QB's in BYU's history, the most productive WR in BYU history, the most productive TE in NCAA history, and the most productive RB in BYU history. Good riddance! :skeptic:

Let me just clarify that in my criticism of Anae, I do not agree that we should be calling for his departure. You don't replace something unless you are forced to or unless you are sure you can make an upgrade. I don't think Texas Tech's receiver's coach is a good gamble after only one game. Remember also that there is more to hiring an OC to BYU beyond the OC's ability. BSU's OC would likely be taking a pay cut to come to a school that has been ranked lower than BSU more often than not in recent years.

Mike Leach's personality is not a good fit for BYU and Bronco, and he also has a colorful past/vocabulary that I'm not sure Tom Holmoe is eager to bring to BYU. Also, there is the paycut thing.

Ty Detmer, Brandon Doman, etc.---are we really hoping for the second best OC in school history to leave so that someone who has never put together a game plan, never organized practice routines, and never called a game can have a crack at it for the first time? Really?

Robert Anae is flawed. So is nearly everyone. The question you have to ask yourself before you hope for Robert Anae to leave is "Are we sure that we are going to be upgrading?" Before you push someone like Anae out the door of an offense he has led to the top of most statistical categories, I think you need to be about 90% sure you are upgrading.

Now, if Anae chooses to go elsewhere, it's different when you talk about less proven options simply because the replacement is no longer a choice, but a necessity.

I like Anae, I think he is learning and growing, and I think he is much better than any viable option on the table right now.

Weakest thread award. How does a team that is 11-2 "SUCK" (in all caps mind you) on 1st and 2nd down?

Crowton might be looking for a job soon, what do you think, call him?

First off I think Anae is a very solid OC. That said, I think in for BYU to get past the glass ceiling and land a BCS bowl something has to change. Yes, 10+ win seasons over and over are good, but I, like many fans, want a share of the BCS pie, especially after watching Utah and TCU make it to BCS bowls.

Honestly, are BSU's players any more "athletic" than our own? I admit I'm not familiar with the details of their roster at all, but while watching them play Monday I couldn't help but think we could stand with them shoulder to shoulder just fine and if they could beat TCU there really isn't any reason why we couldn't too even with all of TCU's "superior" athletes. Is BSU really out recruiting us? (they might be now after their Fiesta win).

The difference therein lies with coaching. Sure TCU may have had an off game against BSU, but BSU came out and smacked TCU in the mouth and took advantage of TCU's mistakes. Much like we did to OU this year.

Again, I think Anae is a good, potentially great OC, but to get BYU playing at the next level it's going to take a better OC than the one we have IMO.
