The redshirt is off

For whatever inexplicable reason, Mangum was sent in to take the knee on the last play, ending the question of whether he will redshirt. Totally bizarre.

They already said they would not redshirt him this year. This was the first game I remember seeing Hinds get into the game and make a play with his reception.

Agreed. Weird. But so was the end of first half clock management. Kalani lucky they get that fg. Otherwise he could have looked a little rookie.

The redshirt was never on. Ty Detmer and Tanner Mangum made that clear in fall camp.

I do not question Tanner's stance on not taking a redshirt.



BUT......



1 - If he never played a down this year he still wouldn't have to take a redshirt.



2 - if he did earn, request, and was given, a redshirt, he wouldn't have stick around an extra year and use it.



The future is not set in stone......It's all about options, baby!



So it seems a little odd to throw away the "option" on a single knee.

If nothing else, he's committed now. so be it.

I wanted them to preserve the opportunity too but obviously there was never even an option for it in the mind of Tanner and the coaches.

My father-in-law told me he already took his redshirt year before his mission and that's why he was never going to redshirt this year, because he already used it

I thought that Tanner gray-shirted before his mission--he wasn't on scholarship.

I don't know, that's just what he told me. His stake president told him that

Tanner's tweet after today's game. And, yes he did grayshirt prior to his mission.



And to everyone freaking out about me "burning" my redshirt... There was never a plan for me to redshirt! I'm already 23!

Well he will play a lot later in the year when we get blow outs.

I was reminded that he will likely backup in the UMass and Southern Utah games to give him some game reps in this system. That way he won't go in cold next year. He will already see in a game how it will work, so it will help him be ready for next year.

This sounds like a solid plan.



I'm growing more and more comfortable with the game planning of this coaching staff. It follows, then, that they are good and planning the season. No reason to suspect that they aren't already planning for next year.

Hopefully we blow out MSU on Friday and TM gets a couple of series.

He can now gain "valuable" experience against UMass and SUU

Tanner has not redshirted yet. He enrolled at BYU in January 2013 and took part in Spring Ball and even summer workouts until he left on his mission in June. He was enrolled in school nor part of the team for Fall Camp or semester that year, much less the actual football season.



He returned in June 2015, participated in Summer workouts and Fall Camp, enrolled in the Fall, and played in 2015 as a 21-year old true freshman.

My dad and I lost the last minute due to everything jumping around and having multiple recordings. This makes me quite pissed.



If protecting Tanner's redshirt was never a priority then I don't see how you justify sticking with Taysom at UCLA. We painfully needed someone that could throw the ball in that game, and Taysom was pure garbage.



This gives me much less confidence in the coaching staff's decision making on personnel decisions. Seems like this was an in game decision. And not a good one.
