BSU made it to the Fiesta Bowl, etc. under a different environment. BSU will likely never sniff a NY6 bowl again.
Under the current environment being independent gives us a better chance at an NY6 bowl or playoffs than joining the MWC or any other G5 conference. Being independent gives us the best chance of joining a P5 conference and gets us more money.
I'm not advocating a return to the MWC, but Boise St's access to the NY6 is MUCH greater than BYU's. Boise St. played in the Fiesta Bowl just two seasons ago under the CURRENT system, BECAUSE they were the highest ranked G5 champion. Boise St. was ranked #20 before the bowl selections. THAT ranking got Boise St. into the Fiesta Bowl against #10 Arizona.
It's called the G5 "ACCESS" bowl bid for a reason.
BYU's *only* access to the NY6 is as an at large team - which means BYU must be in the top 5-10 rankings, depending on which bowls are hosting the CFP semi-finals and how the other top teams are ranked.
FWIW, Boise St. actually still has a decent shot at the NY6 Cotton Bowl this year (which will host the G5 access champion) - Boise St. is currently ranked #19. Houston is ranked #6, so there is a ways to go, but if Boise St. keeps winning (even against a lackluster MWC lineup) they will continue to rise. It's possible that Boise St. and Air Force are both undefeated when they meet over Thanksgiving weekend - a win there could propel Boise St. into the top-10. If Houston loses an AAC game (they did last year) or to Louisville, they will fall.

I'm not the biggest fan of independence, but should BYU decide to go to a G5 conference we're basically giving up on the idea of playing at a national level.
BYU should absolutely NOT expand the stadium.
BYU is certainly floundering in mediocrity. Apathy is taking its toll on the fan base.
There are a lot of complaining voices right now on message boards, but I don't see much apathy. The stadium atmosphere was pretty good last Friday and 62K+ attendance to watch a 1-3 team for an 8:30pm kickoff that didn't finish until after midnight.

Win, though, and that all goes away. Give the new regime a few more seasons. If we don't get to an NY6 bowl or join a P5 conference within the next 3 years, start looking for a conference.
There are other options other than NY6 and P5 or bust (G5 conference).
If BYU can continue to get good attendance at neutral site and road games and earn bowl eligibility against tougher schedules, BYU will continue to get good opponents on the schedule AND BYU's bowl options will improve.
As is, future schedules look nice for BYU and there's a pretty good shot that BYU will have better bowl options when the current bowl contracts are up (after the 2019 bowl season).
The Las Vegas Bowl wants BYU and I'm certain the Cactus Bowl noted the attendance at the Arizona-BYU game. And, if BYU has a ranked season, we will be matched with a comparable bowl opponent.
And, our bowls haven't been bad. In 2013, we were 8-4 and played an 8-4 PAC school in San Francisco (Washington finished at #25 ranking). In 2014, we were 8-4 and got a 9-3 Memphis team in Miami (Memphis finished at #25 ranking). Last year, we were 9-3 and got our rival, a ranked 9-3 PAC school, in Las Vegas (Utah finished at #17 ranking).
