Should Taysom's numbers surprise us?

Before the season started and we found out that Ty was the OC, Taysom was returning and JW was coming back, I was looking at this as a perfect storm coming together offensively. I knew Ty would have some growing pains and need to learn how to be an effective OC and it would be okay because we had TH and JW on the field. Then I started to look at Taysom's numbers and he is pretty much doing what he as been doing his whole career.



Here are his numbers before this season:

I was actually surprised, those numbers by no means are stellar for a passer.



This is what he has done through the first 3 games this season:

So basically he is at his career numbers so far the first quarter of the season with his yards per game up 25 yards a game but his Td's and Int's are way off. If you project this through 13 games, provided they become bowl eligible, that projects as only 9 passing td's for the season! That isn't anything to get excited about.



People would then say Taysom makes up for it with his running ability, which is true, but I think in this type of offense that is something that has less importance than passing ability. With that said his running numbers are way down this year, can that be attributed to him being slower? With him looking to pass more than run and when he finally does the defenders are waiting for him and he isn't able to repeat the great numbers from previous years? I don't know, I guess he is the only one who can answer that.

Very good numbers as a runner. This year:

So his rushing numbers are way down, again why? Good defenses? Perhaps but I don't see that as a 50 yards per game drop.



Granted things can change in the next 3 games where he runs for an avg of 100 yards a game, passes for 250 and a 2-1 td to int ratio and we won't be talking about this anymore. Folks will say those numbers will get better when we get into the easier part of the schedule, but is there really an easier part? We do play pretty good teams this year.

As I've mentioned, I've never been overtly impressed with Hill as a passer.



My hope is with the new coaching regime BYU will get back to pass-first QBs.

Interesting numbers. Thanks for posting the data. I'm surprised that his passing stats look consistent with prior performance since it seems to me like this year's passing is far worse than before. I guess the running stats he put up helped mitigate his passing game and this year, with the running game down, the passing game gets extra attention and therefore, criticism. I'm a huge TH fan and since he is getting the start this week, I am really pulling for him and the team to make huge strides in overall production. I would say the same if or when Tanner plays. Maybe what we should be surprised about then is how poor of an evaulator of talent that Ty Detmer is.logo-lst-notxt.png

Yes, his numbers should surprise us. Because this isn't the Taysom of our most recent memories. This is the Taysom of his early career.



In his six previous starts over two seasons he was completing .661 of his passes (including two games of over .727), he had a 2:1 TD:INT ratio, a PER of 140.49 (which, while not great or elite, is very solid), and had 599 yards rushing w/ 10 TDs.



Right now in his three most recent starts, he's completing just .586 of his passes, has a 1:2 TD:INT ratio and a PER of 102.89. He has just 117 yards rushing w/ 2 TDs.



People were hoping for recent and not distant past Taysom. So yes, we are surprised because his form isn't like his more recent form.

I've decided maybe he should be cut more slack. It is a new offense for everyone, and his numbers aren't that much different. I think the explanation for the change in running numbers is that there aren't as many designed or option running plays for him. That isn't Ty's offense. And yes, his numbers will improve over the season as we get some of the softer defenses. There aren't a lot of gimmees this year, though, so I hope all aspects of the offense improves. Maybe it is to Tanner's benefit for the kinks in the other parts of the offense to get worked out. I don't know. But I trust Ty Detmer, and I trust Kalani Sitake. They will do what is best for the team. So far Ty's numbers are a little better than Robert Anae's were against comparable defense, and Anae's offense won a lot of games. Once the kinks get worked out, I think we are going to have some great offensive football to watch, along with some great defensive football.

So his earlier starts were in a brand new offensive system and the later starts were when that offensive system had matured and he was more familiar with it. Interesting, can't say that I'm surprised.

Tanner didn't throw any interceptions in Fall camp. Hill, of course, did. Hill won the competition despite not outplaying Tanner in any way, from what I had heard.

Coaches are idiots, ya know. Maybe Hill was mounting a coup and coaches gave him the starting job to prevent a mutiny.



If/when coaches decide to play Tanner, I'll be satisfied that's the right choice. Until then T.H. is the man and will continue to get my support.



Tanner, deservedly, has a lot of love from fans. That's what happens when you beat the odds several times at the end of 4th q to win games. I think there was a lot of luck in those plays, but it endeared the fans to him despite one of the worst showing against Utah I've ever seen. Tanner 2015 vs taysom 2016 (against 2 top 15 teams) are essentially equal in points vs power 5 teams.

Yes, It's so unfair that Tanner can't play this year despite being equal in objective measure of ppg vs power 5 teams.

One of Crowton's biggest coaching failures was QB swapping and destroying team unity, cohesiveness, and confidence.

Ding! Ding! Ding! we have a winner! Especially when the problems with Crowton's offense was player confusion because he would throw out the game plan 2 series' into the game and start calling plays the players hadn't practiced all week, or even since training camp. Sitake and Detmer are making the correct decision in keeping Taysom as the starting QB because he isn't the reason the offense is struggling. There are a bunch of other things happening that are causing the breakdowns. Get the entire offense on the same page and things will start working. If the rest of the offense was playing mistake free and Taysom is missing wide open guys, I would support a QB change. If the coaches make a change and Tanner looks as bad or worse than Taysom, where does the offense go from there with two broken QB's?

Not so sure about that. There was a video (perhaps from the DH)? showing Mangum getting picked off. It was cast as a great defensive play (which it was), but Mangum did get picked. Last week of camp, shortly before the QB announcement was made. And yes, Hill was picked, too, a few days earlier.

Does anyone have inside info on whether Taysom's #s surprise the coaching staff?

Yeah. I thought he'd stick with number 4.
