Rank the culprits regarding the offense.

Rank who is the most responsible to the least responsible. I'm just curious people's opinions. Of course, we all hope everything comes together.



For me:



1. Taysom. I hate this because I'm a huge Taysom fan. He still relies on his legs to make plays, but they aren't what they once were. His inability to throw the ball down field has really limited what we can do. Even on his completions his throws are inaccurate not allowing the receivers to make a play.



2. Offensive line. I think the right side has played fairly well. The left side also played well against Arizona's backups. Overall they have been inconsistent although not as consistently bad as Taysom's throws downfield. This is why they get the #2 spot.



3. The receiving corps- Remember the great play that one WR made in catching that otherwise uncatchable ball? Neither do I. Too many drops. Not enough plays.



4. The offensive coaching staff. Given the limitations of #1-3 I don't have much criticism. With a good throw, or good blocking or a good receiver the plays that are called seem to be there. I'm willing to trust the coaches on playing Taysom over Tanner. The bottom line is that Tanner's pass efficiency rating last year was about the same as Taysom's PER in 2014-2015. I wouldn't expect Tanner to be the Savior that everyone is hoping for in this offense. Not with this OL and WR/TEs.



5. Running backs. I love Jamaal. Given the circumstances he's doing his best. There seems to be a big drop off when Algie or Squally runs it.

I would put Taysom 3rd on your list, the oline 1st and the receivers second. Offensive game plan 4th but still significant. The offense is still too vanilla and is not designed to beat bump coverage very well. It needs more screens, crossing and slant routes. The verts are not going to work.

This is interesting. I'm been harping on Hill, but when I do my list he is not the #1 problem. However, QB is the position where we actually have a good bench player to put in there to mix things up.

I concur with the rankings, but I think that Tanner would loosen things up a bit, just because defenses would have to respect the deep ball.

1 and 2 get a pass from me, because there is a learning curve. 3 does not, because he is a senior, and a younger, more talented QB is sitting the bench.

So we give 2 guys a pass because of inexperience but our the QB doesn't get a pass for being in an offense for the first time because he's a SR? That makes total sense to me. Also, the defenses are all designed to stop him first, not the offensive line or the receivers, and neither of those groups have done their jobs at all IMO, especially the offensive line. Like Hans Olsen has said; "catch the freakin ball".

1. OC. Multiple decisions have been made at this level that have been a mistake. I know Detmer is a new OC, but the data was there to make a better call.

First, BYU should have kept Holiday. Hiring Cahoon was dumb. Holiday clearly didn't have any loyalties to Bronco, electing to stay. Our WRs performed better with Holiday. Instead, Cahoon is brought in and the data clearly shows the WRs weren't getting it done under his tutelage.

Secondly, Tanner should have been named #1. Tanner's passing numbers as a freshman are on par with Taysom's and this was after having not thrown the ball in over 2 years. How QBs could get back from a mission and in 2 months be throwing 30 yard dimes? Taysom is an option QB. Detmer decides to take a 26 year old option QB coming off an injury and turn him into a west coast offense juggernaut? Tanner was/is a lot closer to the style Detmer wants to play. Detmer is trying to fit a square peg through a round hole.



2. QB. Throws are off. Open receivers are being missed. For every one replay of a WR missing a catch there are 3 of Taysom launching it past them, throwing behind them, etc. Yes, we're nothing but a bunch of arm-chair QBs, but we've been watching BYU football & many BYU QBs for decades. We have a great macro view of things and can see when it's working. We called Heaps for what he was 1st or 2nd game of Heaps sophomore season. It took another couple games for the coaches to finally see the same thing. Taysom, does not look good out there.



3. WRs. There's just a lack of effort here. Laziness on their end and really no excuse for the softness. The football hits you in the palms, you should be able to hold onto it. Period.



4. OL. They aren't getting it done, but they're also missing key players.

BYU was one good Taysom throw away from beating UCLA and there were several opportunities for that good throw.

Really good points. And after Sitake's scapegoat comment I'm inclined to put the HC and all of the offensive coaches at #1 on this list.
