Looking on the bright side

I know it is hard to see the silver lining right now but I have been really please by the overall play of the defense. Coach Tuiaki has turned out to be a very good defensive coach hire. I still feel like Detmer can get this thing figured out. We really need better blocking by the oline to make it happen. I know it's hard to be patient when the offense looks so bad but this had to be expected especially with this schedule. Unfortunately we don't have a MWC schedule to feast on while the offense gets into a rhythm.

Tuiaki has been solid. I'm impressed.



Not so much with the offense. I think Detmer has what it takes, but he'll likely need to get a new OL coach and a new WR coach.

My fears about the offensive line coach and WR coach seems to be playing out on the field. I sure hope that they get something figured out soon.

Tonight's game painful to watch. I will choose to be optimistic that from the pain, there is opportunity to for growth, learning, and improvement, which I believe we will see a lot of even this season. But man, this game was painful to watch.

I agree Gunk BYU needs a new O-line coach and they will be fine.

I know the o-line needs some work, but I noticed in several passing situations with Hill in shotgun that there was a nice pocket formed, but Hill was at the back of it instead of inside it. Maybe that's due to shotgun depth, maybe it's because our tackles aren't fast enough to keep them outside longer, but it made escaping more difficult, and gave him less time to throw. I wonder if the offense would run more smoothly if he were under center.

Hill is not a pocket passers-by and seems uncomfortable in a pocket. Had he stepped into the pocket he would have had more time ... had he rolled out, he would have had more time. Tri-partite problem ... o-line, qb and oc. Very fixable though

I remember that there were multiple plays where the OL was destroyed and Hill was engulfed immediately. But there were also several plays where Hill had plenty of time and still couldn't throw an accurate or catchable ball.

When I said last week that Hill looks like Jake Heaps at times, it's because he is firing rockets at guys that hit them in the hands, but are too high or low, too far ahead or behind, and too hard with zero touch. Part of the drop problems are on the QB making poor throws.

Yes, that's true. There have been rocket passes when touch passes were required. QBs must know how to throw the ball well for the situation.

It looks to me, that like Jake Heaps, Taysom's internal QB clock is on the fritz. He doesn't think he has as much as he has on some plays so he rushes those throws because his clock is telling him to get rid of the ball. So he's not setting his feet, stepping into the throw and delivering an accurate ball. And it doesn't really matter if he has time or not, all that matters is how much time he thinks he has. He's getting legitimately rushed more than he wants which is making him hurry on other plays.



I don't know what the solution to resetting a QB's internal clock.

Since Taysom is a mobile QB and a very dangerous one at that, the rush will stay in its lanes and make sure he doesn't escape easily. At least a well disciplined rush will.

IMO, Taysom's passes would look better if he didn't get pummeled early and wasn't so worried during the game about the rush. Our offensive line is horrible, much worse than last years and last years was bad.

Greg Wrubel point this out too while I was listening to the game. The last drive happened in part because UCLA was in a prevent mode. Their defense was not the same.



The first TD should be a better barometer of what Hill and the offense can do.
