I heard Doman on the radio this morning and he said some things that may explain his often-critical-of-BYU position.

Towards the end of his interview he said a couple of things:

- He hasn't been to a BYU game since he was fired.

- The only college football game he has been to is UCLA@Utah.

- He is planning on attending this weekend's game.

- He is also planning on attending the UCLA@BYU game.

- He is going to "support my friends".

So it sounds like sour grapes towards Bronco and the staff which has had him squarely facing away from the program for a while now. But it sounds like he may warm up a bit now that the regime has changed.

Where bronco failed him was not in firing him, but in thinking bc he was "the best qb coach in the nation" (certainly prep spin to justify his decision to hire him later) that those qualities would generalize to OC and therefore would deem him to he ready and good as an OC.

His slightly victimized stance of getting fired is only somewhat understandable. But he was failing and many football alumni knew he wasn't getting the job done as an OC and needed to go.

I'm glad he is back on the plan. LaVel firing Fred Whittingham (most likely warranted) created two generations of petty, victimized hatred for BYU and hurts BYU still today.

Doman has sour grapes, it's understandable, lots of people who get fired for not being very good at their jobs have sour grapes.

I think Doman was a very good QB coach, as long as he was working with talented and mature QBs. But he wasn't ready to be an OC.

Bronco did not fire Doman. Anae did it, and did it in an email before running through the chain of command. Bronco was then left with a choice of Doman or Anae, and Bronco, having just demoted Doman and re-hired Anae had to stick with Anae. Anae is the villain in this narrative. I think the relationship between Doman and Bronco was a bit strained for sure, but Anae put Bronco in a bind.

BYU totally botched how Doman was handled after that season all the way up to his eventual classless firing, and I don't for a second blame Doman for being sour on the school after that.

I think that incident more than anything soured Bronco's and Anae's relationship with the rest of the athletic department and let to him looking more aggressively for greener, less-tainted pastures.

I'm scratching my head as to how someone could succeed both as a bishop and a new OC. That would spread anyone too thin.

Are you sure Lavell fired Fred Whittingham? He left BYU to coach in the NFL with the Rams. I thought I have heard this story debunked, but maybe I'm wrong.

Ron McBride fired Whittingham from the U ~2000, but he was never fired from BYU.

Fred's beef with BYU was that he came back from the NFL after working with the Rams willing to work for almost free, and BYU didn't make room for him, choosing instead to leave Ken Schmidt's defensive staff as-is and not fire anyone to make room for Fred at the same or lower cost. He was financially secure and wanted to coach close to his home, which is right on the bench below the Y--his wife still lives there today, so he was willing to work essentially for free, and BYU turned that offer down. He was never fired, and his departure was amicable enough to where he wanted to come back after his stint in LA.

Thanks for correcting the story. What remains accurate is Fred was all butt– hurt and offended over Lavel'sdecision and passed that poison/hate on to his children and grandchildren.

As for alleviating bronco from any guilt in the doman case, that is ludicrous. He should not have hired doman as OC in the first place. And when he hired Back Anae and demoted Doman , what else was Anae going to do? I'm not defending Anae But, this was poor leadership and poor management And that is on bronco.

It's Heaps fault. Or, at least the handling of Heaps. Kid should have redshirted.

Instead, playing him fueled the whole QB mess/rivalry. It threw the offense way off. Anae left, handing Doman a locker room so divided that no amount of team meetings could mend it. Don't forget all the rumors of dischord between players with Nelson at the center of it all. No matter who was OC during that time, they would have failed.

I hope the relationship between BYU and Doman can be mended.

I like listening to Doman whenever he's on the radio. I find his takes to be humble and honest. I never picked up a ton of bitterness from him.

If this is true, I agree, Doman had every right to be sour. He gave a lot to BYU including staying when he could have gone to utah to play QB. (class to McBride for telling him to think about it and not make a hasty decision). Doman is a class act and should have been handled with respect. I'm glad he is starting to feel comfortable around the program again. he is a valuable resource.

Fred Whittingham was fired from utah's staff, not BYU's, by Ron McBride.

I like listening to Doman too. The only thing that makes me go "Huh?" is when he says nobody cared more about beating Utah than Bronco. I sure didn't see much evidence of that on the field.

I think Bronco cared about beating Utah, but caring is not enough. His actions set him and the team up for failure.

I think Doman is a good guy. I was very sorry to see things come apart for him at BYU. Agree with assessment of the QB controversy that Doman didn't have full control over, and also the challenge of being a new bishop at the time. Tough deal for him.
