Utah Game 2016

Utah currently a 3 1/2 point favorite

Over the last seven games the average line has been BYU -0.6. The average margin of victory has been Utah by 11.9 points.



BYU has only covered once in the last seven matchups vs Utah - in 2010 when they lost by 1 but the line was Utah -10.5.



In the last seven matchups, Utah has been favored three times and won all three. BYU was favored in the other four matchups and won one of them and failed to cover in all of them.

Basically, we suck when we play Utah. Here's to bucking the trend.

Very good analysis. It has been baffling. Last years debacle was an unbelievable head shaker. BYU completely fell apart in the 1st quarter and then couldn't recover. utah had no business winning that game but BYU figured out a way to give it to them. I also hope the trend breaks this year and after watching that BYU defense last night I feel we have a good chance to win this years game. I feel the offense is going to have to be a bit more aggressive to do it though. We are going to have to unleash Taysom.

No we don't suck as we have dominated the games but not the score board thank to about 5-7 minutes of game time in each where BYU loses focus.

So just like the AZ game? Where BYU controlled most of that game and really should have put that game away and have not needed a last second FG to win?

It's different because in Ty we have a coach that wants to win first, and rack up points last. He knows matchups better than almost anyone in the game. Anae and Doman had no clue how to exploit matchups. Our offense still has its limitations. The online still sucks, we have a new wr crew, and we are getting used to new faces everywhere. I think we have something like 8 out of 11 new faces from last year. That is no easy task. Having said all of that, the game plan will be based entirely on exploiting matchups, which is something that we can do against the Utah defense, and something that Anae (again) didn't have the slightest ability to do. He was actually the antithesis of playing matchup football. His philosophy was to keep doing something, even if it didn't work, so that made you adjust to what he was doing instead of what you had planned to do. Ty is a different animal, altogether.

In the 5 losses to Utah the offensive numbers, if you take out the turnovers, would suggest BYU should have won the majority of the games.



BYU has 1788 yards over the course of the 5 games, or 357.60 total yards per game vs Utah. An average of 21.8 first downs per game.



Utah has 1621 yards, or 342.2 yards and 15.6 first downs per game.



A few notes on that. BYU clearly is hampered most by turnovers. Moving the ball hasn't really been an issue for them. Even in the meltdown 54-10 year they had TONS of yards of total offense.



Utah has far fewer first downs. And that often means either big plays for touchdown OR, in this case, extremely short fields or defensive touchdowns giving the majority of their points.



Let's delve into that a little more.



Since 2010 Utah has scored 19 touchdowns and 5 field goals. Here is the scary number. Either directly or indirectly, BYU turnovers have accounted for 17 of these scores.



17 out of 24 scores Utah has had in the last 5 games have been gifts by our offense. In 2 games not one single drive by Utah was longer than 45 yards. And Utah won both of those games.

Good analysis, you statistically backed up my statement that BYU should win the game if they don't turn over the ball. I can't figure out why BYU completely lost its head when it played utah the last 5 times but it did. It has been baffling.

Since 2005, Here's the breakdown of touchdowns.



Total TDs: Utah 36 BYU 26

Defensive TDs: Utah 5 BYU 0

Offensive TDs: Utah 31 BYU 26

Off TD Drive <10 yards: Utah 4 BYU 1

Off TD Drive 10-19 yards: BYU 2 Utah 1

Off TD Drive 20-39 yards: Utah 10 BYU 2

Off TD Drive 40-59 yards: Utah 3 BYU 2

Off TD Drive 60+ yards: BYU 19 Utah 13



So 16.1% of Utah's offensive touchdown drives needed fewer than 20 yards. 11.5% of BYU's drives needed fewer than 20 yards.



48.4% of Utah's offensive touchdowns needed fewer than 40 yards. 19.2% of BYU's drives needed fewer than 40 yards.



41.9% of Utah's offensive touchdowns needed 60 yards or more. 73.1% of BYU'd drives needed 60 yards or more.

Thanks for posting this data. Amazing. Puts new meaning to take care of the ball.

A big reason the 2006 team was Bronco's best was very few turnovers. Too bad that concept later escaped him and Anae.

Don't want to jinx him but that's a big reason why he's such a great RB. Almost never loses the ball!

I had a dream last night that BYU won 26-24. I also had a dream that BYU beat Arizona before that game. I therefore predict that BYU will beat Utah tomorrow night.
