Of the Position Groups listed, in which do you have the LEAST amount of confidence?

After fearing the trenches, Cougar Corner has determined that Special Teams may not be all that special after all.



I think I'm going with wide receiver. I have decent confidence in Jeurgens that he can replicate what he's done the last few years (about 35 catches, 400 yards and 3 TDs). I think Kurtz makes a solid #2 WR opposite a good #1. But if Detmer, et al are looking to him to be a #1 that's not a good sign. I think he can do what he did last year (roughly 40 catches, 550 yards and 3 TDs). I think the best replacement for Mathews we probably have is Moroni Laulu-Pututau. I don't think he'll be a 1:1 for Mathews, but he can probably come close to Kurtz numbers. I don't have much faith in anyone else.



Oh, and we have no tight ends.

I wonder about our secondary. Kai Nacua will be back in beast mode. I believe we have Hanneman back at safety. Who are the best lock-down corners we have? If the 4-3 brings the rush, and we nail this position, we should be good. LB help from Fred Warner et al will help mask issues.



And the assessment of receivers is right. I just don't see Kurtz stepping up to a 1,000+ yard season. He will be a solid contributor, but we may see another emergent from fall camp to carry the most receiving yards. Detmer and Cahoon are the coaches to have to nail this though.

There is a lot of expectations for Johan T. My fear here is a couple key injuries could really hurt us here.

I went with the DBs, just because I don't know that I've ever had confidence in our secondary at BYU in any year not ending in '96. With Jeurgens, Kurtz, Pearson, and MLP, and probably less rotation in that unit than with the previous offense, I think you've got plenty of talent and experience there. You also have some newcomers that could really make some waves, like Talon Shumway. You do need someone to step up as a TE, but I think we have enough bodies there that someone will do it. I believe we have the right coaches to make that happen, anyway.



With the secondary, it looks great on paper talent-wise. However, besides Michael Davis, there's basically no experience at corner, and none of them have been asked to play man coverage on an island in a 4-3 defense at the D-1 level before. At safety, you've got Nacua and Hanneman as starters, but I don't know that there's a ton of depth behind them. I feel like if Nacua or Davis go down or rotate out, everyone else is going to be lost out there and we're going to get burned.

BYU has good DBs right now, but half of them will be injured and another quarter will be suspended 2/3 of the way into the season...



I think Kurtz is going to have a great year.
