2016 Poinsettia Bowl date/time announced

The game will be held on Wednesday, December 21 at 7pm Mountain time against an opponent from the Mountain West Conference @ Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego--assuming of course that BYU is bowl eligible.

Does BYU have a bowl tie-in this year. 2017 is the Hawaii Bowl. What's the tie-in this year?

Poinsettia Bowl is BYU's tie-in for 2016. They set this up a long time ago -- even before the deal with Las Vegas/Hawaii for 2015/2017.

Hopefully BYU gets bowl eligible this year.

Yes.

I fully expect BYU to get wins at home against Southern Utah, UMass, and Utah State. So that means they need to pick up 3 more wins for bowl eligibility. These games are ones that I believe could be those games:

- @ Cincinnati - It is a road trip back east, but Cincinnati lost 5 starters from their offense and the game comes after a bye week.



- Toledo - BYU should handle them--but my worry is this game is a Friday night game following a road trip to Maryland to play West Virginia. It also follows 4 P5 games to open the season. Hopefully there isn't a letdown here.



- @ Boise State - The blue turf is never an easy place to win, but Boise State hasn't been the juggernaut it has been in the past. BYU should be competitive here.



- @ Arizona (neutral site) - Arizona's big issue last year was defense. If they haven't managed to fix their issues there and if the BYU defense can keep the Arizona offense from going crazy maybe BYU steals this opening season game.



- Mississippi State - Miss St is replacing a QB who is now in the NFL--and they are traveling out west to play at altitude. Maybe things go BYU's way.



- Utah - I'm not going to call BYU a favorite here--but Utah is replacing a bunch of guys. If BYU can not turn over the ball--a lot--they could be in this one despite the hostile environment at RES.



I don't expect BYU to get ALL those games but they only need 3 of the second list of 6 games to secure bowl eligibility. If BYU manages to get UCLA, @ West Virginia (neutral in Maryland), or @ Michigan State that would be a huge bonus in my book.

This is a lot like last year. It was quite popular to predict doom and gloom last year with the schedule, but we still won 9 games. This year maybe the schedule is tougher, but no one knows that for sure until the season plays out. Who knows, but maybe Arizona or MSU end up being terrible or something. I do think we have a little better talent this year in general, so 9 wins again wouldn't surprise me.
