Bronson Kaufusi is a monster at the defensive end position. Standing at 6’6 and nearly 290 pounds, Kaufusi is one of the more physically gifted players in this draft. His stats suggest that he should have more value than where he’s projected to play, but a raw specimen like Kaufusi has the kind of potential that many GM’s are looking for.

Strengths

He has great pad level when attacking the line of scrimmage, it’s not often that a player gets the better of his tall frame. He has the kind of motor that teams love in a prospect and has a knack for following the play down field until it’s over.

Although he’s nearly 290 pounds, Kaufusi possesses a frame that could add another 15-20 pounds and still be the player he is now.

It’s hard to find consistency in college football, many players have years of spiked stats and other players completely drop off the map after one year. Kaufusi has been consistent throughout his years at BYU and has gradually improved on the year before.

If he can translate some of his strengths to the next level, he has an opportunity to be a solid contributor if not more.

Weaknesses

Kaufusi is still raw as a prospect. His stats and size are misleading to the weaknesses that are involved in his game. While he earned 10 sacks this year, Kaufusi often struggles to get off of blocks in the run game. A player at his size should not be easily pushed aside. He’s very stiff-hipped and has trouble turning the corner, he’s not a violent player when attacking the quarterback.

A lot of his production came from extended plays as opposed to the initial attack. He’s an athletic talent but doesn’t possess the skills that teams look for in a defensive end.

Outlook

Brandon Kaufusi has potential but needs a lot of work in the technique department. The combine will help his stock but his play on the field is still questionable moving forward.

He doesn’t have the play making ability that many would hope for given his stature. Kaufusi may end up being a strong special teams contributor, but his outlook as a consistent player on the defensive line is slim.

I was surprised to see the "needs a lot of work in the technique department" comment. Bronson's technique has always looked pretty good to me (though they're to pro scouts, not me), and that comment seems to contradict the earlier observation that he has great pad level, consistent production, and that his length isn't a liability.

But it the poor technique comment is true, that comes down to coaching. And isn't his Dad his coach?

What to make of this? I like coach Kaufusi a lot, but maybe he needs some retooling?

In the NFL, it's a scout's job to identify flaws and weaknesses. The coaches are looking at upside, scouts look at downside to balance it out and together you hope to get a more objective view as a GM. Coaches see flashes of potential, scouts tell you what you need to overcome to make those flashes into consistent performance at the highest level.

True NFL scout tickets read like this one.

Fortunately, most of the downer comments were about Brandon Kafusi, who I believe is an All State rep, not a D End. Whew!

This report does seem strange. I remember hearing throughout the season comments about how his technique was very good. Also I seem to remember a lot of his big plays coming on the initial attack. Maybe the scout was looking at his junior year film where he was forced to play out of position?

IMO Kaufusi has very good technique in run defense and pushing the line of scrimmage back.

His technique in shedding pass blockers is not as developed.

Steelers are interested in him:

Interesting to read the comments. Most Steeler fans seem to be high on him.

Exactly the kind of tweener end we have been hearing more and more about. Being a BYU guy adds to the resume as well. 11 sacks against a pretty darn tough schedule too.

Where's the option to put something in as a quote? - Thanks Hawkwing!!

Just to the right of the underline button is a quote button.

That's what happens when teams run away from you, or send an extra blocker the few times when they do come at you.

And the "he's not violent enough on the initial attack" comment? Maybe they didn't watch any of this tape?

Excellent point.

I wouldn't take the negativity personal. There was a lot of this type of stuff written about Ziggy too and he turned out to be one of the best players in his draft.

I'm not. It's just bush league, honestly. The fact that he has the **rare** ability and speed to chase down plays run away from him (as 70%-80% of them were) is a weakness instead of a strength? That is just bad scouting...

And I don't get the "he isn't violent enough on his initial attack" comment... was he/she expecting two footed dropkicks? What does that even mean? If he means that Kaufusi wrapped up the tackle instead of going for the homerun hit, well that is further evidence of discipline and shouldn't be a negative.

It's either just words that mean nothing, or if there is context behind the words, they are wrong.

Some of these scouting reports are smoke screens to get other teams to look at another guy when the team scouting him really likes him. It's just part of the game. Bronson is going to end up on a team after the draft and then it will be up to him to prove these scouting reports wrong. Ziggy did, in a huge way.
