You have to love Mark Few

There are few good coaches out there that make daunting statements like he did following the failure of any additional teams from the WCC being selected to the NCAA tournament, while they tied for the regular season and then won the tournament and could only merit an 11 seed in the Dance. He felt the team and conference was totally disrespected, but at the same time went on record that the teams outside of SMC and BYU needed to step up. The WCC needs the NCAA tournament money and you get very little of it with only one team involved.



So then he takes his 11 seed team and defeats 6 seed Seton Hall. Seton Hall had to have been hating the placing of a team like Gonzaga that far down in seeding to end up with them. Gonzaga definitely walked the talk.



I'd like to see BYU and SMC go out and win their second games and show the nation that the WCC was not a 1-bid league.



At the same time how fun was it to see the powerful PAC12 going 1-3 yesterday with every seeded PAC12 team being beaten by a team with a lower seeding (two 8's being beat by 9's--which isn't a huge upset, but a 6 being beat by an 11).

Gonzaga couldn't win the big non-conference games on their schedule. Let's just say they win that close game at home vs. Arizona as well as the one on the road at SMU where they were leading until about 5 minutes to go. Those two wins and they probably are about a 6 seed. They were hurt by the rest of the WCC being bad, sure, but they also didn't take care of business in the non-conference very well either. Kudos to them for playing great last night though. And I think they have a great chance to beat Utah.



The WCC being a one bid league has more to do with St. Mary's bad schedule and BYU losing too many. Neither had a very good NCAA resume. SMC was arguable, but the NCAA has been extremely consistent over the last many years of punishing teams for not trying very hard in the non-conference schedule and rewarding teams when they do schedule tough, as BYU was the beneficiary of that the last couple of times we went.

At least for non-power conference teams. If you're in a power conference, you get a pass on non-conference scheduling.

BYU should be concerned that St. Mary's surpassed 25 wins and didn't sniff the Tournament. Many fans have felt that hitting the 25 win mark essentially guarantees a bid, even with a weak out of conference schedule, but that is clearly no longer the case for a non-power conference team.

The fact SMC hit 25 wins, went to the WCC tourney finals and didn't get in speaks volumes to how bad the WCC is perceived. Yes, the rest of the WCC needs to up their game so winning 25 games in the WCC is viewed as an accomplishment, but that is going to take some time. BYU needs to win 27 games a season to be sure a spot in the NCAA tourney.

SMC hit 25 wins by not leaving the Bay area once during OOC play, and I think they only left the confines of their own gym only once. That did them in as much as anything.

I'm pretty sure that it's not an issue of how the WCC is perceived. It is more of a statement to schedule tough non conference games. We've never been left out of the dance when we've deserved it. We schedule decent out of conference. St Mary's will start to do so now that they have experienced the punishment of light scheduling.

UAB had 26 wins and also won their mid-major conference during the regular season.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Way to go Zags! Now Puketah knows how bad of a seed the NCAA gave the WCC champion. It's fun when you can cheer for your fellow conference brother and see them waste those Pukes. I couldn't believe the interview in the locker room and all of the Puke players were crying. Crying! That team that has a malignant fan base that has made fun of BYU players countless times when they have gotten emotional about any sport and there was a locker room full of their own crying babies.
