OT: Utah athletic dept draws audit

Krystkowiak being willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars from his own pocket to cancel the BYU basketball contract has apparently drawn the attention of lawmakers and made them question if the state-funded University of Utah's athletic department is making decisions and taking actions to intentionally harm peer institutions in Utah--some of whom are also state-funded. Specifically they are referring to the cancellation of the football series with Utah State, basketball with Utah State and Weber State, a hiatus with BYU football, and now with BYU basketball.



They will perform an audit to gather financial information that they can use to make future decisions regarding funding. Sounds like a threat that Utah might start losing some funding which will shift to the smaller state-run schools to compensate for the Utah athletic department taking actions that financial harm the institution and the surrounding cities.



While Hughes (a BYU grad) is on the committee, the main driver here appears to be Dan McCay (Utah State grad) and the committee unanimously approved the first-ever audit of its kind. This will take place through the rest of the year.

That is outstanding news. UofU looks like a selfish bully. I suspect the audit will not go well for the Yewts. Fair play and honorable intentions are not core values in the Yewt athletic dept. Karma.

Last month, the State, released the results of its annual financial audit of the Utah Athletic Dept. Unless this new audit will look at different aspects of the departments operations, the results will be the same. The information the politicos need to make decisions is readily available.

Fearful of rivalries and cancelling them, We do need to note that they now are saving money for now unneeded fear counseling.

Sorry man......the story clearly states that this is not that standard financial audit.

The "efficiency and effectiveness" review is the first-ever state audit of a single athletic office. The breadth of the new request distinguishes it from other more routine reports, including a brief state financial analysis of all eight public colleges each year.

This would be called an operational audit not a financial audit.

I especially liked the part about Dan McKay threatening the Ute Athletic Dept that the state legislature would "get rid of" them if they thought they were able to "take over," i.e. be too big for their britches and do anything that they wanted. That was awesome.



Also, the Utard trolls at the Tribune on-line sites are going ballistic over this. They're blaming the LDS Church for it, and calling it a violation of separation of church and state, which fits their usual MO of inane absurdity. However, anything that upsets them, makes me smile. ;) 8)

"Dogs of war" can mean the animal who has been trained, but Billy could have meant a wild pack of soldiers.

Thanks for posting the article, which I read. Very interesting. Even more interesting are the comments. Like people watching via online comments. Fascinating. The logic it takes to twist the topic of an article, which essentially states the State Legislature will take a closer look at operations of a public entity to examine efficiency/effectiveness/waste, in to an angry anti-Church rant and debate about separation of church and state is also fascinating.



Imagine the following scenario: Audit concludes; makes recommendations that are burdensome or adverse to the U (I suppose, e.g., reduction in funding); Coach K does press release: "We are so happy that we made the decision to cancel the BYU game in the name of player safety. Going through the audit was well worth it because gosh darn it, our male basketball student athletes were protected from BYU. We in no way question the wisdom of cancelling the game. #SafetyFirst."

From what I read it isn't just BYU it's the other in state schools as well. One account said one of the 2 that were pushing this was a Utah State grad. That institution is no more officially associated with the church than the U of U is.
