snoscytheI thought, given how some people are already trying to downplay BYU's demolition of Arizona last night, it would be interesting to see how many of the top 15 teams (I stopped at 15 because at that point the two polls start to disagree) have a 30 point road win this season. My findings:
1. Kansas--has only played one roadie, a 12 point win at 5-7 UCLA (RPI 246).
2. Texas--only one roadie, an 18 point win at 5-6 Rice (RPI 209).
3. Kentucky--only one roadie, a 27 point win at 6-6 Indiana (RPI 261).
4. Purdue--two road wins, by 11 at 8-4 Alabama (RPI 68) and 8 points at 5-8 Iowa (RPI 169).
5. Syracuse--one roadie, a 16 point win over UNC (RPI 39).
6. West Virgina--two roadies: a 2 point win over 4-10 Cleveland State (RPI 221), and an overtime win against 9-2 Seton Hall (RPI 73)
7. Duke--one road game, a 4 point loss to 10-2 Wisconsin (RPI 30).
8. Nova--Three road games: an 8 point win at 4-7 St Joes (RPI 111), a 10 point loss to 10-2 Temple (RPI 4), and a 41 point beatdown of 2-9 Fordham (RPI 274, who also lost by 30+ at home to 5-5 BGSU).
9. UNC--one road game, a two-point loss to 14-0 Kentucky (RPI 11).
10. UConn--no road games yet.
11. Michigan State--Three Road games. Losses at 10-3 UNC (by 7; RPI 39) and 12-0 Texas (by 11; RPI 5). Won at 6-7 Citadel (RPI 236) by 13.
12. Kansas State--Two road games. Won by 15 at 10-2 UNLV (RPI 31) and by 13 at 8-4 Alabama (RPI 68).
13. Georgetown--Two Road games. 16 point win at 4-7 Tulane (RPI 223), and 19 point win at 5-8 Savannah State (RPI 300).
14. Tennessee--One road game. 22 point win at 8-4 USC (RPI 45).
15. Ohio State--Two road games. 6 point win at 7-4 Cal (RPI 22). 8 point loss to 8-4 Butler (RPI 19).
Only one of the top 15 has a 30 point road win this season--Nova over 2-9 Fordham (RPI 274). The closest thing to a 30 point win over a team at or above .500 is Tennessee's 22 point win at USC (RPI 45), or Kentucky's 27 point win at 6-6 Indiana (RPI 261). BYU's 30 point win was over 6-6 Arizona (RPI 77).
What was most telling to me is the breakdown of how many road games these teams have played (or NOT played):
1 team has yet to play on the road.
7 teams have only played one road game.
5 have played two road games.
2 have played three road games.
0 have played four or more roadies.
BYU has played four road games. Winning at 7-6 Hawaii (RPI 208) by 18, at 7-7 Fresno State (RPI 200) by 5, and at 6-6 Arizona (RPI 77) by 30. BYU lost at 10-4 Utah State (RPI 149) by 10.
Looking at these schedules, I think BYU has proven more on the road than any of these 15 teams, with the lone possible exception of K-State, but how well can you prove yourself in only two away games?
It's a crock that the USU loss is still holding BYU out of the rankings. Look for us to have a good jump next week if we take care of business Saturday.
