For an idea of the pay bump, I had heard Anae was making ~$350K as the OC/Assistant HC under Bronco.

Great job for them for getting paid.

Well, that ties it. Their love for BYU was apparently limited to a certain dollar amount. I'm not blaming them, especially in light of the weak job security the assistants would have had while waiting for the chips to fall/settle at BYU. But, this does perhaps shed some light on Holmoe's desires to find candidates with former BYU ties, especially players. Sure, business is business, and two of those guys were former Cougars (2J and Atuaia). Also, it's the HC, OC, and DC that provide the glue to keep the others on board. None among that triumvirate had motivation, like Lavell, to support BYU for decades, or to finish a career at BYU. Again, business is business, and it works both ways, but still, it feels good, at least for now at the start, to get these former BYU personalities.

As an aside, I would add that I am very excited to see the priority being given to the development of tight ends, to bring BYU back to its old offensive identity. Finally! This is evident in the announcement that Assistant HC Lamb will be working with tight ends. BYU's offense used to be the Three Headed Monster when it had the likes of Clay Brown, Gordon Hudson, Chris Smith, Chad Lewis, Itula Mili, and more recently, Jonny Harline, Andrew George and Dennis Pitta. Finally, Mahina and Peck had their moments, but seemed to be a result of coaching after-thoughts, rather than having initial, fully committed game plan positions. At any rate, it will be great to see the old, Pro style BYU offense again. Go Detmer!

LaVell was not a cougar.

Sorry. I know, I wanted to come back and correct that, Sno, but had to get back to the office for work. Anae was an OL man on the 1984 NC BYU team. He is difficult to read, regarding whatever loyalties he has had to BYU, having been a some what gruff, or stern coach, and less of a father figure than Bronco or Lavell was.

Anyway, good call, Sno.

Sorry again. Did not mean to imply that Lavell was a Cougar, but my bad, I did not make it clear. I believe Lavell played for USU?

Good call by you as well, Hawk.

That's right, USU.

There's no guarantee, or even likelihood in some cases, that they had a job here. Why wouldn't they go if offered (especially at almost double the salary)?

Yep. Crockpot roast! Sooner or later this cultural/hiring mandate that it is a calling to work for BYU is going to kill choke off the football program. Think of it this way Bronco was and now Kilani is (even at a paycut compared to bronco), is THE highest paid employee in the church. Second highest! Probably now Ty Detmer.

I do think it is a business to be managed, not just a church calling. There is a salary to be negotiated, and there is an expectation of performance. A BYU HC, no matter how spiritual he is, or how much of a great person he is, will end up on the hot seat if he does not produce. So in this sense, BYU is just like any place else ( I am not saying that BYU is not a special place; it certainly is a unique environment for the over all college experience and for coaching issues with the honor code and missions, etc). But as I said before, business is business, and it's a two way street, so I don't judge any of them.

While there is no expectation for any coach to stick with BYU forever, there is nevertheless a benefit that comes if you just happen to end up with a diamond that has no personal need to leave. Is that ever going to happen again? Who knows.

It does remain a feel-good factor, no matter how nebulous, and a potential investment factor, even if improbable, to have landed some good guys who were former Cougars.

It is good for them to get experience in other programs and with other coaches. Plus we get to develop new coaches. Hopefully it pays dividends down the road in future hires. I would like to see more LDS/BYU coaches get into the profession.

Under Lavell we had some coaches spend their whole career here and now we don't have a lot of options to hire new coaches.

This is a pervasive issue and has huge effects on the faculty hiring and retention as well. Believe me, I know from personal experience.

Perhaps BYU should do a little tax planning. Say to them that we will give you a 10% raise by declaring they will not pay the 10% tithing on their BYU salary. There would also be a savings on the payroll taxes and maybe it would put them in a lower tax bracket to boot. No tithing was paid for athletics but tithing was not received.

By my calculations, adding Bronco's $2 million bump, if this represents a doubling of salaries for the others, then church tithing should go up $500K. All part of the master plan. All part of the master plan.

Here's another reason they went...it was an actual job offer.

There were 3 coaches from the staff that didn't go. Most of us thought they would be given jobs on this new staff. I'm starting to think none of them end up on staff.

Our WR coach just went to Utah. And from what I'm hearing, there was no original offer from BYU to retain him, and no counter offer made once Utah offered.

It's been close to a month since Sitake was hired, and we're still mostly without a staff. And none of them are doing the same job for a 2nd time, except for Lamb. This seems disorganized.

But what the heck...Kalani to save us all.
