OT: Memphis has another bowl incident

....though not nearly on the scale as last year.

A Memphis football player had an altercation with a member of Auburn's equipment staff and stole a football before leaving the field immediately following Wednesday's Birmingham Bowl.



Memphis cornerback Reggis Ball appeared to forcibly take a member of Auburn's equipment staff to the turf on Auburn's sideline, wrestled a football away from him and ran to the Memphis locker room at Legion Field.



"As I was coming out (to the press conference) I was hearing of bits and pieces of what happened and they're in the dressing room right now trying to sort out," interim Memphis coach Darrell Dickey said afterward. :"So we will certainly look into what went on, what happened and get the facts squared away.



"That's not us and if in fact somebody on our team did something like that then we'll certainly address it. But I don't have all the information with me at this time."

The guy is a senior though so I don't know how they will address it.

This was absolutely incredible and I'm still laughing at the stupidity of the player involved. Great someone captured the moment on video. Way to go Tigers!

C'mon Schmoe, what is any coach or A.D. Going to say in such a situation?..."yep, that's us. That incident right there represents everything we teach and want to represent in our program. We only wish that all of our players followed this example and we were able to show everyone exactly who we are. Obviously, as a staff we are doing a poor job of recruiting because we should of had at least 60-65 players trying to steal the other teams' equipment". :roll:

When your team starts a fight after a bowl game, and then you have another incident after the next bowl game, you did a very poor job of reminding your team how to behave after the game, especially after the first incident. What's he supposed to say? I don't know, but using that same lame phrase again isn't doing him any favors.

This guy is the interim coach as their HC left for another job. But I completely get what you are saying. BYU has faced some of the same scrutiny for dirty plays. You can say you aren't a dirty team but when evidence of dirty play continues to surface, maybe you are. In Memphis' case, maybe they are a problem team if their team continually has problem guys on it.

Was this a case of the team behaving poorly or was it one individual acting selfishly and exhibiting poor behavior on his own? Easy to sit back in the armchair and paint with a pretty broad brush sometimes.

You and I have no idea what the interim head coach said or didn't say to the team about how to "act" at the conclusion of the bowl game. I am fairly certain (though admittedly just a mere guess on my part), that he didn't say....."hey, make sure at least one of you run over to their sideline, push the equipment manager to the ground, and get away quickly with one of their game balls. Oh, and make sure nobody records you doing this. I don't want to have to stand before the media again and have to pretend one more time that this kind of behavior isn't representative of who we are as a program." :roll:

One report I read said that he likes to take a game ball from each game he gets an interception in. I guess he tried to take one from the equipment guy who didn't understand what he was doing so instead of just plain asking if he could take a ball, the Memphis player tried to wrestle the ball from him, taking him to the ground in the process and stole the ball from him. What a dork. haha

Yeah, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he also didn't emphasize "Hey guys, that brawl last year was a huge black eye to our program. After the game, quickly shake hands with the other team and then get your butts off the field -- we don't need any more black eyes."



Certainly it was only one player's actions this time, but when your teams has a certain reputation attached to it, you should take extra measures to make sure that things don't happen. That's all I'm saying. I admit, I didn't know that this was the interim coach and not the HC from last season.

Yet when the team knows whenever this guy gets an interception during the game he goes over to the other team and steals a ball for a trophy, then yes they do condone the behavior and it does represent who they are as a program.

I'm just glad they took this kid, who was a senior and had played his last game as a Memphis Tiger and kicked him off the team. That really showed him!
