It's all about the turnovers.......again

In BYU's 3 wins against the utes under bronco, they have had a total of 3 turnovers. In the 7 losses, they have averaged about 4 turnovers per the game. Without the 5 turnovers in this game we get the comfortable win that we have been craving. Hopefully the new coach will figure out a way to get the guys to come out with intensity but not turn over the freaking ball. On the positive side, BYU is never out of a game with Tanner Mangum at QB.

Unless you're playing @ Michigan and the refs aren't calling any defensive holding... ;)

I know you are TIC here but that was his third start against a really good defense.

Yeah, I know. it's too bad he had those 3 ints today. He was lights out and looked the best he has all season both in and out of the pocket. Very nice game and glad he'll be a cougar next year (presumably).

If Tanner takes a sack during that first third down attempt instead of trying to get the ball out, we win this game going away.

He's a freshman. Those are the kinds of things you just assume will happen with a freshman. Unfortunately it happened in a game against our bitter rival. The future looks very bright with Mangum. I hope he gets some great tutoring from another gunslinger at QB coach. ;)

Brutal thought, but probably true... Can't fault a guy for giving it his all. He was trying to do just a little too much.

It's something BYU needs to learn. UTah is going to hit you hard and try to knock you out early. Weather the initial storm without TURNING THE FREAKING BALL OVER and doing barrel rolls while the ball going into the endzone (heaps disaster) and you'll likely be able to exploit them later.

IMO, this is the bigger issue with BYU vs utah than the coaching situation. I don't think Bronco coaches his teams to turn the ball over 5 times on the first 5 possessions. I think the guys want to win so badly that they try to hard and lose concentration.

This falls on the coaches and players. The coaches are the one constant in all the rivalry games where this has happened. They need to prepare the players to just protect the ball first quarter.

And Mangum has enough games under his belt now. He never should contine to try to throw a ball while someone is tackling him by his throwing arm. That is inexcuseae and most certainly we win if that doesn't happen. The coaches should have emphasized this kind of thing over and over and over as well.

Well, we are about to get all new coaches so I guess we are going to get a new set of scapegoats when the guys turn the ball over 5 times in the next rivalry game.

I have little doubt that we will beat Utah next year. Bronco has built a good core of players who will be ready for Utah. I'm not sure about the rest of the year. Our coaches will have to grow quickly.

Scapegoats my @$$. Those turnovers were mostly on the coaches. Just like in 2008.

Really? how so, did Anae and Bronco huddle the players together and tell them to spot the utes 35 points so BYU could have an even more dramatic victory after the come back? Get real dude. Coaches coach and players make plays and the offense was too excited and hyped up when they started the game and didn't execute the way they were supposed to which caused turnovers. Also some utes made good plays. It was also the coaches who made adjustments both offensively and defensively which allowed the 28 point comeback. Are you willing to give them that credit? Are you going to start calling for Sitake's head after the 2nd week of next year when BYU loses #6 in a row? Or will you be singing his praises if we beat the utes and lose all the rest of our games. I love BYU football and Bronco was a terrific head coach. If Sitake can just match what he did here he will be a great coach IMO.

I won't be calling for Sitake's head because I expect growing pains with a new staff and the killer schedule. I'll give him time just like I gave Bronco.

What I think Bronco and Anae DIDN'T do was stress ball security enough before the game. Or, if they did, they did a very poor job. Nor did they make adjustments to stem the tide of turnovers in the 1st Quarter before it was too late.

But I know you'll never figure this out, Mrs. Mendenhall. You and the family enjoy the flight to Virginia. ;)

Yeah, I don't understand it. The only questionable TO was the Canada fumble and that is questionable because he hadn't taken a snap for so long and you stick him in a game that is going down the tubes. Mangum made a freshman mistake on the first TO.

How do you teach ball security against tipped passes?

3/5 of the turnovers were just flat out bad luck.

I've never met any of the Mendenhalls personally. I would like you to show me which of the other games this year where BYU turned the ball over 5 times in the first quarter on its first 5 possessions. I'm sure BYU emphasized ball security all year, if you start getting into the kids heads because it is utah, it will only make them think harder about it and make the problem worse. This was not a coaching issue, it was a player not executing issue and the utes making some good plays. The ONLY thing I could possibly think the coaches could have done is tried to calm the players down on the sidelines in order to try to get them to focus. Who's to say the coaches weren't trying that? Since BYU football is a 1 game season for you, I anticipate this kind of vitriol next year when we lose #6 in a row because I just don't see a brand new coaching staff to have things figured out by game time of game #2.

When we see the SAME problems against the SAME opponent year after year, it's a Coaching issue.

Maybe so. but Mendenhall was a proven winner. His teams only performed the way they did against utah and no one else. That indicates to me that somehow the utes got into the heads of BYU and maybe even Bronco's to the point that they didn't perform the same way against the utes that they did everyone else. I don't know what the answer is. BYU's coaching staff knows a lot more about football than me or you. They knew better than me or you that the turnovers are the key to victory over the utes but still in the last 5 games against them the team turned over the ball at an extraordinary rate. I guess we will see if the new coaching staff comes up with the right answers in this. If they don't, I expect you to be one of the first guys calling for coaching change no matter how successful the new coaches are against everyone else.

I swear some of you guys just don't get how big of a deal that is - Bronco's continual losses to Utah - our rival!

He didn't have the answers either. Year after year we come out scared and timid, almost like we lost the game before it even started. That Bronco never figured out how to fix that was an unforgivable failure.

If I was Tom Holme, and if Bronco wasn't already quitting, regardless of whatever other successes he had, I would have fired Bronco after the game yesterday. At some point enough is enough.

I'd blame Jason Beck for the turnovers before I start blaming Anae and/or Bronco. The common denominator in 4 of the 5 was Tanner Mangum, and Jason Beck is the coach responsible for his performance. One fumble and two picks were quarterback issues that are fixed with better awareness and decision making.

The other pick was a flukey bounce, and the other fumble probably made Squally Canada very glad that Anae is leaving and taking his doghouse with him.
