Dick Harmon--Ken N. Not 1st Choice

Dick Harmon has some interesting insider info today.

Per his sources, Ken N. was not BYU's first choice, so while BYU did in fact extend an offer, it had enough stipulations (e.g. no triple option) to make what would have been an easy "yes" for Niumatalolo into a difficult no.



Harmon thinks BYU has someone else in mind they think they can get, but not right now, so they are making moves to show action to the public.

This makes it look like having Ken N. in there was just a part of due diligence? Who the heck could TH have as his first choice?? It obviously isn't Kalani, or that deal would have been done by now. I wonder if he's waiting for someone like Bevell (could be a long wait), or possibly K-Whitt (after this weekend).



Who else could they have up their sleeve?



Don't get me wrong, I think Bevell or Reid (pipe dream) is worth the wait, but I'm not convinced that's happening. I just feel like TH is fumbling around with people he doesn't see as a perfect fit. Probably because the perfect fit is the guy who's leaving.

If they are targeting Darrell Bevell and have to wait until the NFL season is over, the last regular season game for Seattle is January 3. If they make the playoffs, the Super bowl would be as late as February 7.



If they are thinking Sitake or Whittingham, I would think a move would happen next week as soon as the bowl game is over so things are settled before the Christmas holiday.



If Anderson, the Stanford bowl game isn't until January 1.

Andy Reid was runner-up to Gary Crowton in December 2000.



I think Kyle is the guy Holmoe is waiting to interview. Either he will be named HC as early as Monday next week, or he declines and Sitake is the guy. And even if Kalani flames out, he should stock the cupboard fully for the coach who would come after him.

Whitt has always been Holmoe's number one choice. Niumat. was never going to fit. Holmoe doesn't want the triple option and Niumat. wasn't going to give up the option.



I think Kalani would be a home run hire. He would be a game changer in recruiting, everyone who has played under him raves about him, and I think its best for BYU to have a defensive-minded head coach.

Actually - Harmon is saying that a "source" close to the situation said that Coach Ken "may not" have been BYU's first choice.

Harmon makes it sound like the Brethren forced Holmoe to make an offer to Ken, so Holmoe made a bad offer on purpose.

If Sitake is so awesome, why is Gary Anderson begging BYU to hire him? Wouldn't he be telling BYU that Sitake is too valuable on his staff and while he will respect Sitaki's decision if he decides to leave, he will be sorely missed. Instead he is saying "just hire him already", "he needs to be on the sidelines at the Vegas bowl" In other words, get him outta here so I can get someone better. Just my opinion.

Why would kwhitt or any other successful coach want to undertake indepedence and religious distractions to leave a successful program? Did Bronco finally realize the probability of P5 as doubtful? I'm concerned this may be the beginning of the end...

Bevell was probably the first target.



With who's available, I'd be happy to wait until February to have him. Seriously...our candidates pretty much all suck.



Saw somewhere that boosters are putting together a package similar to Bronco's at UVa to pay Whitt. I just don't know why they didn't give the better coach (outside of close head to head games, Bronco has shown better) what he needed to be successful.

Was Dick saying TH made a low ball offer or just that there were stipulations KN wouldn't be willing to agree with?

What was his record at Oregon State? Was he the mastermind of KWhitt's defense or did KWhitt make him a better DC? Is there enough proof of his dominance as a DC? I don't think there is YET...

The end of a legacy that LaVell built. The structure of collegiate football with money and exposure keeping the P5 conferences in power. It takes money to compete. I don't think the church is willing to invest the amounts of money needed to keep on top. Without continued success, money dries up...

Every season he has been a DC for a team, the defense has gotten undeniably worse -- I've posted the numbers on several different threads. I can't for the life of me figure out why people think he's a good defensive coordinator.
