For those worried that all Ken N. knows is the triple option

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is the clear top choice to as BYU’s head football coach, but there is a concern among BYU fans that the triple-option offense will be coming to Provo. There is some valid concern over this as Niumatalolo left the Navy staff as their offensive coordinator in 1999 over differences in the style of offense.



Niumatalolo had no job lined up but had the chance to coach the tight ends, special teams and was the offensive play caller. He learned under Hall of Fame head coach John Robinson and was calling the plays, with success, for an offense that was more of a pro-style set compared to an option offense.

For those worried about the offense, Navy's offensive production under KN has been as good or better than BYU's the last eight years. You have to go back to 2009 to find a time when BYU gained more yards per play and scored more points per play than Navy.



2015:

Navy: 420.5 yards per game & 37.5 points per game; 726 plays, 6.95 yards per play, 1.61 plays per point

BYU: 428 yards per game & 34.2 points per game; 836 plays, 6.14 yards per play, 2.04 plays per point



2014:

Navy: 419.5 yards per game & 31.8 points per game; 857 plays, 6.36 yards per play, 2.07 plays per point

BYU: 460.2 yards per game & 37.1 points per game; 1,050 plays, 5.70 yards per play, 2.18 plays per point



2013:

Navy: 411.3 yards per game & 33.5 points per game; 921 plays, 5.81 yards per play, 2.11 plays per point

BYU: 493.6 yards per game & 30.2 points per game; 1,111 plays, 5.78 yards per play, 2.83 plays per point



2012:

Navy: 383.2 yards per game & 25.0 points per game; 872 plays, 5.71 yards per play, 2.68 plays per point

BYU: 400.4 yards per game & 28.7 points per game; 1,003 plays, 5.19 yards per play, 2.69 plays per point



2011:

Navy: 398 yards per game & 29.7 points per game; 829 plays, 5.76 yards per play, 2.33 plays per point

BYU: 405.7 yards per game & 30.1 points per game; 958 plays, 5.51 yards per play, 2.45 plays per point



2010:

Navy: 404.8 yards per game & 29.7 points per game; 849 plays, 6.20 yards per play, 2.20 plays per point

BYU: 366.5 yards per game & 26.2 points per game; 946 plays, 5.04 yards per play, 2.78 plays per point



2009:

Navy: 356.1 yards per game & 28.0 points per game; 930 plays, 5.36 yards per play, 2.37 plays per point

BYU: 427.2 yards per game & 35.6 points per game; 889 plays, 6.25 yards per play, 1.92 plays per point



2008:

Navy: 353.3 yards per game & 27.2 points per game; 808 plays, 5.68 yards per play, 2.29 plays per point

An argument could be made that with better athletes, he could do really well at BYU. Would a TO hurt the chance at a P5 invite? I think it would. Who wants to play against it?

Type "midline option" in the search bar and you can spend all night learning the nuances of the offense. For that matter, just read his review of any game we play and you'll get a good idea of what you might be in for.

I'm not going to say Ken N isn't a quality coach, nor that he wouldn't uphold the mission of BYU, but let's look at this a slightly different way.



Let's say Mora at UCLA leaves for the NFL. Rosen is the returning QB. UCLA has a history of being able to recruit great QBs and WRs. Would their top candidate to replace Mora be Paul Johnson at GA Tech? Absolutely not.



So Ken has 3 years working outside of the option on a bad UNLV staff. To come to BYU one of two scenarios would have to happen.



Scenario 1-Ken comes, brings the offense he's been successful in for 20 years. We lose our one true recruiting advantage (great QBs).



Scenario 2-Ken comes, abandons his scheme, can't bring any of his offensive staff with him. Hope we have some killer coordinators.



Now, on top of that, we ask this man to move across country, live with the downside of both scenarios, he gets paid the same or maybe slightly more than he was making at Navy, has the pressure of following a coach that was outpacing the guy whose name is on the stadium.



Outside of the Mormon connection, this is a terrible match.

How about this: Ken N comes to BYU, hires Ty Detmer as OC. The two of them, along with Tanner Mangum come up with a newly revamped playbook the incorporates the principles Ken N utilizes at Navy, Detmer run while at BYU under French/Chow and Mangum knows from Anae.



Play calling isn't about being tied to a singular offensive system. It's about finding a rhythm that keeps defenses guessing. It's about finding and exploiting matchups that magnify the strengths of your personnel.



I have full confidence in those three of coming up with something good.

How about hiring a proven winner. I don't think that he is stupid enough to bench Mangum for Hoge in order to run a triple option. Everyone freaking out about that is being unreasonable.

I have a gut feeling that Ken N. is about 85% of the coach that Bronco is.



The good news is that's a solid 30% more than the closest competitor.

Give me a break, Hawk. He doesn't even have the job yet and he already doesn't measure up? Ken is a good man, runs things super clean at NAVY (cleaner than Bronco has run things here), has a far superior recruiting "disadvantage" than Bronco, is NOT at a destination school, and doesn't piss the fans off. Oh, and he absolutely OWNS his rival.



Let's give him a few days at BYU before we break out the measuring sticks.

And he has turned the Notre Dame game into a rivalry, since Navy beats them every now and then now when they hadn't won a game against the Irish in like 30 years before he got there.

HA HA HA. These are my 2 favorite things about Coach N. as decided by a lot of fans apparently.



1. If Coach Ken ever lost to Army he should have been fired, and that's being generous, When was the last time Army was even remotely relevant.

2. Why are so many fans worried about fans getting butt-hurt by the coach. Just win coach. You can talk about the fickle fans and the "lack of knowledge" that we have all you want. I DONT CARE as long as you're winning which Bronco did consistently.

I don't think sex or etoh is against NAVY's HC, which is the " honor code equivalent" that Sno was talking about. I think... feel free to correct me at will sir sno.

And yet Bronco thought it expedient to improve his image over last two years. Why? Probably bc TH told him to. He was pissing off donors (for additional reasons like losing to rival more he should) but most importantly--bc they are "fans" too.

And I really doubt he will attack UVA fans the way he did BYU fans. So, it cuts both ways.

I keep saying he is going to experience flak there as well and if he doesn't deal with it better, those wahoos will run him out of town. So, win, yes! But don't act like you hate your fans.
