Ultimate Dark Horse for HC Job

I know a guy who is active LDS with some P5 head coaching experience, and who would be readily available to take over as HC. He knows the Honor Code inside and out, understands the unique recruiting challenges, and he's intimately familiar with the organization Bronco Mendenhall has built underlying success and could keep it going.



He's a Lavell-era player who went on to win three-Super Bowls as an NFL player, and one as a coach (he was the DBs coach for a guy named "Deion Sanders") and later served as a DC for Steve Mariucci (for a college team). Granted as a PAC-12 head coach for five seasons he went 12-43 and his best season was a 5-6 team, but he's been there.



So, how far-fetched would Tom Holmoe as head coach be? Tom takes the reins, Chad Lewis or Brian Santiago gets promoted to AD.



I know this isn't an ideal move, but to me this is the safety net--our worst-case scenario if no better options are out there.

I really don't think this is at all out of the realm of possibility, and I'd be OK with it given the really poor list of potentials we have. He wasn't great at Berkeley. That's for sure. But he's a very engaging personality, and being able to flash 4 super bowl rings isn't a bad recruiting pitch.



And he'd just be the AD and Coach.

I don't see it as a bad move at all. He's learned a lot about being an administrator and delegating as the AD, which is really how Lavell ran the team, anyway. He'd probably be able to pull in some great coordinators to do the X's and O's.

That would feel like the ultimate desperation move to me (but he's preferable to Whittingham) so I guess that there is that.

If Ty were OC and Chad TE/OL coach, with a killer DC, I would be all for it. All the HC needs to do is know how to motivate, hire talent, and manage the in-game situations.

Soory but won't happen as there is far to much work as AD for him to be the HC.

I was thinking this the other day.



Holmoe could coach and do it well, perhaps for a few years till one of the other candidates gains some more experience.



It would make more sense for Chad Lewis to take on AD responsibilities. In fact, TH could hire Lance as DC, let Lance get a feel for things and then promote him to HC.



Fact is, though, TH isn't coaching because he doesn't want to. Been there done that for him.

I think he's also not coaching, because he wasn't very successful at head coaching. I do think he'd be a lot better now and agree he would be a great hire if we had a great OC and great DC.

I don't think he was in a very good situation at CAL, I think he could be a really good coach but I don't think he wants it and that is why he will not step down as the AD in order to coach.

This would be the ultimate value play for the BOT. They wouldn't have to pay Tom very much because he knows he'd never get back in the saddle any other way. He'd do it just because he wanted to and he'd probably be pretty good at it. He could hold on for Tanner's tenure while a longer-term solution could be brought in inexpensively as an assistant and groomed to take over as yet another value-priced coach who would become the next unexpected success.



However my guess is that Tom is happy to let younger men with a taste for less sleep and more antacid than him take the job.

he could take it for a month and then turn it over to Reid or Bevel after the NFL season ends.

Ultimate darkhorse… Gifford Nielson. Let's think this thing thru. No ties to Utah, President Uchtdorf could be the pilot of the team's plan. President Nelson could be the medical trainer, but shouldn't be because of his ties to the Utes. Elder Oaks, legal counsel. Elder Holland, motivational coach. Elder Echohawk - multi culture coordinator. Does the potential HC candidate still have to be interviewed by one of the Twelve? Any other candidates for positions?
