Long View of So Many Coaches Leaving

Years ago, and this is all from memory, there was a certain nameless apostle who wanted to get rid of BYU. He didn't want to congregate all the young Mormon kids together in one spot. He wanted to spread them around and do missionary work in other universities. When he became the prophet, he went silent on doing anything like that. Like I said, this is all from memory and I will not name the person, buy the library at BYU is named after him.



BTW, my oldest brother received his mission call under one bishop, left under another bishop, and returned under a third bishop. The brother just older than me received his call under one bishop, left under another bishop, and returned under a third bishop because the second one died. For my mission, I was called by Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith, left under Pres. Harold B. Lee, and returned under Pres. Spencer W. Kimball. I guess I was pretty rough on Presidents of the Church.



Anywho, getting off the above tangent, my ADHD kicks in, I really think Coach Bronco's decision to go to UVA could be a very good thing for missionary work and Church PR. Even taking so many of his assistant coaches with him, while it may not help the BYU football team very much, could really help spreading the gospel.



I am not happy with him leaving. Why couldn't he wait for another thirty years when I'll either be way dead, feeble of mind (more than I am now), or one of his boys is old enough to replace him, but it be whadit be.



And who knows what he can do there to help get BYU into a P5 conference.



But,l in the long run, it about the gospel and letting our lights shine.

Good job your honor. Good post. Good points. Savoring salt for other places. Leavening bread in other bakeries. Spreading the good news or at least good influence in other places. And getting paid $16mm to do it! Not bad. Dont think that the UVA admin has a least a few doubters and watchdogs for religious "improprieties."

I can kind of relate: I was accepted to BYU while Lavell Edwards was the coach, got there in Crowton's first year, and graduated with Bronco at the helm. ;)



Enter to learn, go forth to serve. I believe that's exactly what this is. I'll tell you what, though - for me, personally, if I could get a job anywhere in the BYU football program, I'd take it and hang on to it until I was forced out by retirement, firing, or death. If only they needed software engineers...

I don't know how much "gospel spreading" he will be doing. A state run university is much different than a church run private school--just ask the Utah coaches who were teaching an institute class in the practice facility for football players after practice--they were asked to shut it down.

Did you read Vai's article about KN? He teaches (and he players have adopted) the mottos of "Return with Honor" and "choose the right" ... yes, he has put them in slightly a different framework, but the kids clearly understand his teachings.

I'd couch that as "sound principles for living" more than "the gospel". Meaning nobody is getting baptized because they agree with those principles.



Whittingham teaches sound principles too:

No Drugs

Honesty

Treat Women With Respect

No Stealing

No DUI's

I'd rather see a sermon any day than hear one.



Saint Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.”



People know he's Mormon, and his example will do more for spreading the gospel than talking about the Church.

Utah fans are going to have a field day with Ken N.'s mottos of "Chose the Right" and "Return with Honor." You thought they mocked Bronco for being overly religious, wait until you get a guy who was actually in the Meet the Mormons film.

Guest editorial in Deseret News says KN is a long-shot

Some candidates who could potentially be interested, but not likely to happen, include Navy’s head man Ken Niumatalolo, but would BYU want the triple option he runs? The Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell would be an interesting choice, but Seahawks’ coach Pete Carroll won’t let him interview. Kyle Whittingham’s name has been mentioned, but for him to leave Utah he would really have to dislike working with the Utes athletics director Chris Hill to take the pay cut that would come with switching teams. A dark horse candidate for the job is Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin, who could switch programs if he feels BYU is a better fit.

No idea why he says that ... but it's another opinion.

So you mean in an "every member a missionary" kind of way since he will be in the "mission field" in Virginia? If so, I concede.
