Robert Anae as HC...Pros and Cons

I am seriously interested in hearing some intelligent comments on this possibility. I think Coach Anae will be given serious consideration for the HC position, so what are the Pros and Cons as they pertain to him. If you are in the "Anae is not the Guy" camp, please feel welcome to share some pertinent thoughts on the subject, and please don't just spew the usual vitriol rhetoric laced with venom ;)



Pros:



Consistency in the program as a whole, smoother transition

Has put up some solid offensive numbers in his stints as OC

Has shown flexibility and adaptability the past 2 years with what has transpired at QB

Has some excellent connections that will help in putting together a quality staff

Understands completely the limitations and constraints that are in place BYU



Cons:



Perception of fanbase that "Anae is not the Guy" for a variety of reasons

Aura of arrogance and irratibility

Never been a HC



Let's hear some of your thoughts.

I agree with your Pros ... good points. Additionally, he meets the standard the BoT have imposed. He understands the recruiting limitations, and the geography. He understands the university and the power structure. He has at least seen the interactions with the fanbase, the CougarClub, etc.



Cons:

one former player told me that he would struggle to be a BYU fan if Anae got it. He says that one reason for that was that Bronco had rules against swearing and expected players to not swear, etc. Then in team meetings, Anae would cuss up a storm. That may sound quite petty ... but it goes to the underlying respect the players have or would have for him. In the future, when the team is full of guys who never played for Bronco ... it matters less. But right now, it could be a real issue.



On the flip side, when one of the guys on defense started a fight in a scrimmage by playing "exceptionally tough" against one of the O-linemen (and the result was that the o-line actually stepped up their play) ... Anae brought the defensive player a bag of 25 cheeseburgers and told him he appreciated the guy getting the o-line fired up and playing better. So, he has a way of connecting with players too. Which says, that if he is HC, he'll overcome any lack of respect some guys may have for him ... at least over time.

I heard from a local kid who was a walk on that Anae 1.0 was a total jerk. Of course, all walk ons who don't get the playign time that they beleive they deserve feel similarly about coaches, so I took it with a grain of salt. the other things I read from those closer to the program seem to back this guy's perception though.



That said, I'd prefer him to Sitake for some reason that even I cannot understand.

The quote below is off of a Virginia Fan Forum (TheSabre.com) and is from a supposedly former BYU player (pygmalion) who played for BYU in Bronco's first years. He started a post about what Virginia players and fans can expect from Bronco. This was a very interesting and worthwhile (at least to me) perspective to read.

I'm pretty sure that we all beleive that Bronco occasionally cusses.

One theory of mine as to why Bronco looks so stoic on the sidelines is because rather than risk a cuss word slipping on national TV and creating a new BYU controversy akin to caffeinated beverages or using vending machines on Sunday, Bronco chooses to remain mute.

No, it doesn't. Kind of surprised by that (as was Anae per his comments). It will be interesting to see how it all plays out moving forward.

Pretty official. He's accepted a job offer from Bronco, Harmon wrote about it in the paper.
