I remember reading how when he went to SF he had the coaches and Steve Young mesmerized when they did position and O meetings. He was called one of the very best backup qb's ever in the NFL. Imagine what he could have done if he had Elway or manning type body and arm.

It is my understanding that one reason he was kept in the NFL as long as he was is because of how good of a coach he is and the benefits of having a player-coach.



I know it is a LONG shot, but I would be a fan of seeing him brought in ... HC, OC ... he's loved of CougarNation, and I'm sure he'd be good.

He would be a fanstastic QB coach. I really hope there is a place for him in this next staff. I tend to think he could be a great OC as well, but that is probably too much of a gamble for a HC to take at this point.

I think we as fans see so little of what really goes on behind the scenes in the coaches jobs that we think it's far easier than it really is. Or that unrelated experiences would transition to new roles.



I don't think it's a coincidence that superstar athletes rarely make good coaches.

Good points. He would definitely be a great QB coach, but I also think he could be considered as an OC ... again, I've never coached or played at this level, so it's just a fan being a fan.

The fact that he's turned around a winless HS team to go 8-1 this year shows he has potential as the head man, but I don't think you take a flyer on him yet. Get him on the staff somehow if you can, and go from there.

Given that Doman had a QB controversy of Broncos making, Bronco interfering with every move he made and the fact he had lesser talent than Anae did. I would say Doman did very well under the circumstances. Doman had the same record against top 25 team that Anae did with Anae have the better players. Doman had no real chance of succeeding with Bronco only wanting Anae as his OC.



I belive that TY would make a good HC and OC and TY does have some HC experience as that is what he is doing right now.

We don't actually know that Doman was a good or great qb coach, do we? Just because BRonco spouts off about him being the "best qb coach in the nation", and then gives him the OC position (at least 5 years to early), that doesn't make it fact. If there was something that Bronco was absolutely terrible at it was evaluating and promoting his staff. Doman couldn't even counteract against basic bump coverage, which as a qb coach he should know how to do. I think Doman relied a lot on athleticism as qb, and a lot less on making reads, which is why he didn't make it far.



I think TY would be a fantastic OC, and we would get top rated recruits to play for him. I don't think he takes a qb position, even at BYU. And he shouldn't. He is ready now to be OC. He has been calling offenses for the last 20 years now.

I would love to see Detmer as the QB coach. Can you imagine how great it would be to have a Heisman winner recruiting? Love the idea.

Signalling in plays. Diagnosing the defense. Let's not be nit-picky here. You understand what I am saying. Have you ever watched an NFL game where the (starting) quarterback throws a pick? He doesn't go to the coach. The first person he goes to (after maybe conversing with the wide out) is the 2nd or 3rd string quarterback, who has a print out of the skyview of the entire offensive series.



He wasn't calling the plays in the NFL, but he was relaying them - for some of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, by the way - and he broke them down with those same quarterbacks when things weren't working well.



He was a backup and/or mentor to Brett Favre, Rodney Peete, Steve Young, Tim Couch, Michael Vick, and Matt Schaub over a 13 year career. All over the place he is heralded as one of the quickest and most brilliant minds that his co-players and coaches had come across. You don't stick around in the NFL as a backup for 13 years without being severely gifted physically (Detmer was not) unless you are an amazing offensive mind (which he is).



He is more prepared than most "career" coaches working their way up through the JUCO ranks. The fact that he has been head coach in Texas for the last 7 years is icing on the cake,

Wait, I was a volunteer offensive coordinator at a high school for two seasons and was moderately successful--should I be applying for BYU's OC vacancy?

Moderately successful? Dude, skip OC, you should apply for HC. I'll be your OC - I managed to win a national championship with BYU on the hardest difficulty level of NCAA '08.

Further disclaimer: At the end of the season, I did need several upsets to happen to get me into the title game, and I shamelessly reloaded and replayed all of those games until I got what I needed. :D
