"The head coach has to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in good standing"

This is a self imposed bylaw. It is time for the BOT to take a step back and view the landscape of what is going on here.

I feel that if the head coach is willing to live, promote and enforce the Honor Code at BYU, and abide by the other many challenges that they will face here (like all other non-LDS players and associates), then they should be considered a candidate to run the program. If they are non-LDS, they should also be required to have an LDS "spiritual advisor" like a mission president on staff to address the spiritual needs of the players (like Notre Dame).

I think that it would do wonders for the PR of the LDS church if they hired Steve Sarkisian as the next head coach at BYU. Assuming that he is addressing his alcohol problem, could you imagine the great PR the (bigoted, intolerant, unfair) church would get if TH extended the olive branch to SS?

Sarkisian is a really good football coach who knows how to navigate BYU. He's a beloved former QB. It would be like the "Prodigal Son". Kudos to the church if they made this happen.

And a move like that could help us get into the Big12.

Mesa, you have put some very good thoughts and ideas into this post. This would truly be some outside the box thinking on the part of TH and the BOT. Very interesting idea indeed.

Never gonna happen. Bronco raised the bar for what the BoT (i.e. the First Presidency) expects from a coach. They want a missionary as much as a X-and-O winner.

Weren't the Jesuits missionaries? Isn't Sark Catholic? ;)

Having a non-LDS head coach would really surprise me. In fact I just can't see it happening. Why does the Church need good PR? Why does the praise of the world matter?

Sno- The desire to have a "Missionary" would be fulfilled by the "Mission President" staff member.

The critics will call it BYU selling it's soul for a few more wins in football. PR just cannot be a consideration here. Hire the best guy and let the world deal with it as they want

I realize that this scenario is highly unlikely, but it is the kind of scenario that the BOT and TH need to consider. Of all the names that have been discussed, the only game changers (upgrades) would be Reid & Whitt. Those are unrealistic because of financial restraints. Sark is a game changer who has been humbled by his own actions. He was a $5 MM coach at USC, but now a leper who may have been humbled enough to accept the pittance that we would offer. We would be getting a great value head coach for pennies on the dollar.

Exactly. What it should do is create an mandatory anger management workshop for its players who can't seem to control their anger and are creating a mdeia frenzy of sorts.

Additionally, if BYU wants they type of coach Bronco was, missionary first, then they aren't likely going to get better. So maybe they should wise up and realize that they want a premier football program paying nearly a pittance to a coach in comparison to other elite schools. In fact, I would wager to say that at just over $1mm salary, Bronco was dramatically underpaid in comparison to the under-market pay for professors. I'm sure they have stats that show faculty getting paid on average 30-35% less than like-kind faculty at other elite institutions. Bronco was getting 30% of what he will get at UV freakin A! You blew it TH and "rich" donors. If you want big time, prime time, then you better pay up. You just lost a coach who brought you more of the whole package that you want than likely what you are going to get. If Jeff Benedict is correct, and the "winter" of BYU football is coming, then you have been penny-wise and pound foolish! Yes, I'm ticked that BYU can't pony up to keep a really solid coach. There isn't an elite LDS coach out there! So to consider a "good dude" from rehab is who is clearly on and off the wagon (that's called an addict, folks) is ridiculously pandering to the PC crowd and won't even come close to buying BYU or the church the "positive rep" you area suggesting.

Bronco was the IT that you were seeking and he just chased a 65% pay increase at a university that isn't even nor has the chance to be an elite football Program.

Maybe the Ute trolls. I think most of the world would view it as a compassionate / intelligent move by the BOT and TH.

Herein lies the problem. "Pennies" on what dollar? Of his 5mm choked opportunity? You want a drunk dude (how do you know he has been truly humbled and rehabbed?) to come in and "save" BYU? Some of you guys are smoking crack.

Why don't we ask Notre Dame how it worked out for them to hire a known cheater? For that matter, why doesnt BYU prove its compassion for turnarounds and feel good stories and see if George Oleary wants the HC can job at BYU. Do you know how a program can be described that hires a football coach with a tainted past? A sell out hoping for a miracle. A dumpster fire.

Hey! Mike Leach has BYU ties. Maybe he has stopped locking up players in football sheds and would be interested in coming to BYU? Ya, the BoT is interested in that idea.

TH hopefully has something up his sleeve. I hope it's Sannfords DC assuming he is as qualified as people think.

Sorry guys. I guess we shouldn't stifle brainstorming. Particularly on a a fan board. Apologies.

I think (and have said it here before) that Bronco was the perfect coach for BYU, and was the best combination of traits available out there. I'm sure there are others that I haven't met yet (maybe the guy from Stanford). there are better X and O football coaches than Bronco, but probably not in the $1 MM range. There is no way that we find a "Value" that Bronco was for the insulting wage that we offer at the Y.

Sark would be an upgrade in X's and O's. The spiritual advisor could be an upgrade as well. Win / Win

Yes the biggest problem is our unwillingness to spend market $ for market value. I would guess that the BOT would be willing to hire Sark before they would be willing to open the coffers (both not going to happen). I didn't start this conversation thinking it would or could happen. Just that it should.

Prodigal Son. I would never discard someone (Sark) because they are an addict. I know many people who have destroyed their lives, but have made changes, and have re-built themselves.

Sark the alcoholic has destroyed himself, but I believe he can repair that.

The "spiritual advisor"???

And why would the Stanford dude take a paycut to be a HC??? Here is the problem folks. Again, BYU, all of us for that matter, want Prime Rib results but are only willing to pay McDonald's hamburger prices. It is what it is. Or should I just say MWC conference coach wages. Yep, that's what it comes down to folks.

I don't think Sark, for right now, will even be considered for the position of head coach, even if a non-member could be the HC.

He isn't still coach at USC for a reason and it's not a matter about forgiveness. It's a matter of trust.

They don't want a missionary on staff. They want a missionary like Bronco was front-and-center. If you hire a lds-liason guy to accompany a non-lds coach, he's going to be a faceless nobody. Does nothing to accomplish what they will be looking for.

I think a Sarkisian hire would look more like an act of desperation than an act of forgiveness. Sark's next stop is the OC of a top 20-program or the HC at a JC or UNLV-type school.

While I completely agree with the Church/University needing to pony up a lot more money - at least twice what they're doing now - I don't like the idea of a non-LDS head coach. Doesn't sit well. Hiring any if them, from Sark to Saban, WOULD be selling out. We are who we are.

You don't need someone who just says they will follow the standards, you need someone who buys in and appreciates them.

Also, the money in football is spiraling out of control. I wonder if it ever comes crashing down at some point.

Sure it would look good. and it may turn SUPER ugly when we have to shuttle the guy out of here because of alcohol or terrible records.

Nope. Too much risk. Good PR could turn into the ultimate BAD PR if things didn't go well.
