Start Taysom or Mangum Next Year?

I don't even know if Taysom will want to come back or not, but the Utah fan's overtures for Taysom had me wondering what we would do, or rather should do, if Taysom got healthy and wanted to play next year at BYU. Having a full season of perspective on Mangum, he is obviously going to be very good. Does what Tanner has done this year outweigh what Taysom Hill potentially brings to an offense in what will undoubtedly be a huge test next year (our schedule)?

I don't think Taysom even considers coming back without an assurance from BYU that the starting job is his, and I think the coaching staff makes that promise if they have a nickel's worth of sense.

I would love to extend BYU's QB dominance by another year by having Tanner red-shirt for Taysom. Would NOT want to see Tanner burn a year of eligibility in order to fill in for only two or three games late in the season if Taysom went down. In that scenario, it would be necessary to start a greenie QB for a few games, which could blow a season that had promise to that point. So what would they do? Sacrifice one of Tanner's full seasons, or give up the current season? That potential contingency is what makes Taysom 2016 a difficult call. If the 2016 season proves overwhelming, and there are two or more losses already, then it's an easy decision to save Tanner for 2017. The trouble is, that there's no way to predict that ahead of time.

In my mind, Tanner is gone after 2017 anyway. I say give Taysom the full reigns next year, Tanner will be fine, he won't redshirt because he's leaving early anyway. Taysom has 2016 Taner 2017 and then we're on to our next adventure.

Re above, perhaps Hoge could fill in, but it seems like there would be temptation to burn one of Tanner's years, if a big team season record was still possible.



Thoughts on Hoge as stop-gap?

I would want both QBs to play next year.

Won't happen, but it would be cool to see both Taysom and Tanner play.



Give Tanner about 20 snaps, but most with Taysom still on the field - lined up in the backfield or in the slot. It would give Tanner some game time and pass attempts, but also a handful of option plays where you throw or toss to Taysom on the edge - could set up some fun screen/pass option (and decoy) trick plays.

If Taysom comes back to BYU next year, he is the clear starter. One thing that Jason Beck said on BYU sports nation in a recent interview is when you have Taysom Hill on the field you have the best player on the field on your team. Tanner is an amazing drop back passer and is going to shatter every BYU passing record if he stays healthy and for 4 years but Taysom Hill is a rare talent that is irreplaceable. He gets the ball if he comes back to BYU. I agree, redshirt Tanner and let him make the decision when to go pro when that time comes.

The goal is going to keep him from getting hit, not make him a player that gets hit on non QB plays. It will never happen. If Taysom is the starter, Tanner will sit the bench and hopefully redshirt.

I'm not as high on Tanner redshirting. I'd prefer that he actually backup Taysom, so we have our next best option readily available when Taysom needs a breather or when we are up by 4 touchdowns against Arizona, UCLA, Utah, WVU, Michigan St., etc.

If Taysom comes back the job still belongs to Tanner. Sometimes you do lose your job due to injury. It's happened to even some of the best of quarterbacks (Joe Montana, Drew Bledsoe, Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning [just watch]).



And boo on any coach who would guarantee the starting job to any player without a competition.

Start Taysom and let Tanner play. Tanner would learn a lot under Taysom as they work together. Tanner will not stay 5 years if he has a shot at the NFL.

Tanner's been great, but I haven't seen enough to make him the presumptive starter over Taysom. You're the only person I've seen suggest this.



The NCAA where eligibility is limited is a much different game than the NFL examples you've mentioned. In none of those cases was a redshirt an option, nor were any of those situations where you knew the other guy only had a maximum of one more year.

I'm with the start Taysom and play Tanner crowd. But I might try a two drives for Hill and one for Mangum and so on to see if that would work. It would take away some of the risk for TH per game and give TM a fair amount of potential meaningful snaps. I still feel TH is a special player. We win vs UCLA and Mizzou for sure and the MI game is much more competitive and even a possible win if TH is in there. TM is good and may become great but TH is great. He did have a relatively injury free Soph year so he can go a year without getting knocked out. Also, all the injuries are unrelated and the last one can be called a "freak" injury.

I would take Taysom and his ability to make plays with his legs every time. Tanner has the chance to be great, Taysom when healthy is already great. Everyone needs to look at BYU's history when they have a senior running back and quarterback coming back for there senior seasons together. I want to see Taysom and JWill back next year to face that schedule together.

My only question is, "Who's Magnmum?"

Let Taysom start, build a big lead and then bring in Tanner to finish it off. Both are good QBs but Taysom is the difference maker.



Playing Taysom less will reduce the chance of him getting hurt too. We want him to finish the year out and move on to the NFL.

Love Mangum, he's done awesome.



TH has done more, is a difference maker in every game he's in.



Start Taysom. Play Mangum if needed.
