Bottom Five or so and Other Miscellany

This was quite the weekend. BYU dominated. BSU went down and Utah too. And Gary Patterson pulled the bonehead play of the week. What was not to love?



5. Ungov nominated TCU for the Bottom Five and who can dispute it? Previously they struggled with KS. Then going for two earlier in the OU game and failing, at the end of the game they scored a potentially tying TD and instead of kicking the extra point for the tie they again went for two and the win and again failed. Kicked the extra point twice and they win the game. Fail.



4. The Ohio State Crybaby Eyes. They lost to MSU and sure it hurts. But what do the crybaby eyes do after the game? Two players announce they will be going pro and one criticizes the play calling. Announcing going pro has its place, but doing so BEFORE the next game, and against rival Michigan, and also before the bowl game? Well bizarre to say the least.



3. BSU. Team is in free fall. A top 20 team at the beginning of the season, they have now lost twice on the Blue Turf in the last two weeks. Air Force turned the ball over 4 times and gave up an 83 yard TD run on the first play of the game. On the second play AF fumbled and BSU converted a FG. After that, it was all all down hill. The BSU mystique is gone.



2. 76ers are the anti Golden State Warriors. O fer so far. 76 might just stand for the number of loses they rack up this year. Duke or KY could probably beat them half the time.



1. It is time to say something. Jerry Jones is soulless. Bottom Five finally got caught up on the Greg Hardy story. And in the end Jerry Jones sold his soul to win some more games. For shame Jerry Jones! For shame!

Utah did beat Michigan and MI crushed BYU. But then a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. BYU lost by one point to UCLA at UCLA and UT lost 17-9 to UCLA in SLC. UT beat FSU by 25; BYU won by 42. Just sayin.

Yeah, It very well could be the beginning of the end for BSU. Not that I'm sad about that one bit.

Zeek Elliot was a fool to have spoken of the play calling like that. Very lacking in class. You can feel that way, but you don't EVER say what he did when he said it. You can think it, but you just can't say it at that moment, even though he was right. That kind of calling of offensive plays I'm not used to seeing out of my Buckeyes. Tough loss. My only recovery Saturday was BYU bashing hapless FSU. That was fun, but ever watching your team, that you know is better, being beaten by an inferior team, that's tough, and the Cougs did it as well in KC this year.



I wouldn't call BSU on a steep incline yet until you see multiple years like this season. They're level of success was just so way out there for a good decade that it's unusual to see them in this current tailspin. We'll see after this season what happens maybe 2-3 years consecutively.



I could never understand how they were putting together such teams in Boise, but the fact that Dan Hawkins didn't pan out moving his show to another stage (Colorado) indicates that it wasn't all coaching. I think the jury is still out as to what Chris Petersen will prove to be in his opportunity and to what level was it coaching/recruiting was the success at BSU.

I never agree with going for two early in the game. There is so much more game to be played, and going for two twice cost TCU, when if they would have just kicked the almost sure thing both times, they would not have been in their predicament. The only score that matters is the final score. You go for two based on how much you are down by/ahead by, and how many possessions you think you or the opponent will get...but that is a fourth quarter decision.



It makes sense to go for two to extend a lead from two to three points or from six to seven points in the fourth quarter, so that you don't lose the game on the team's next possession. It makes sense to go for two if you are down by 15 or 16 points in order to only have to score two touchdowns to make up the difference. But there shouldn't be any reason to make that decision in the first three quarters when there are still plenty of possessions left to score.



As for going for two to win the game instead of tie, I am not a big fan. It is a lot of pressure to win the game on one play. In overtime in college, you never know. You could intercept the ball and just have a chip shot field goal. And even if you let them score a touchdown, you can also have a chance to score a touchdown...on multiple downs. It just doesn't seem worth the risk in the college game. Now in the NFL, where possession is determined by a coin flip, and if they score a touchdown you lose, I could see the proverbial going for the win on the road, and the tie at home. But, I really don't get it at the college level. Well, I guess the only time I get it is if you are truly outmatched, lucky to really be in that situation, at the two point conversion represents your snowball's chance of beating the much better team. Other than that, I don't get it.

So, if I'm following this correctly, Utah was better than Michigan in MI's first game of the season with a new head coach, while MI playing at altitude and on the road, and BYU couldn't keep up with MI in their 4th game with MI at home. Otherwise, in the common opponents game, BYU shows why Utah doesn't want to play BYU in the Vegas bowl. Did I get that right? :skeptic:
