Scheduling for Success

What are your thoughts on the following BYU football schedules?



2017

Home: Utah, Wisconsin, UCF, Memphis, SMU, Boise St.

Away: LSU (in Houston), Mississippi St., ECU, Tulsa, Air Force, San Diego St.



2018

Home: California, Washington, Temple, Tulane, Air Force, San Diego St.

Away: Wisconsin, USF, Houston, Navy, Boise St., Utah



2019

Home: Utah, USC, Tulsa, ECU, Houston, Boise St.

Away: Virginia, Washington, UConn, Cincinnati, Air Force, San Diego St.



2020

Home: Michigan St., Missouri, Navy, USF, Air Force, San Diego St.

Away: Utah, UCF, Memphis, SMU, Boise St., Stanford



2021

Home: Utah, TBD, Cincinnati, UConn, SMU, Boise St.

Away: Arizona St., Temple, Tulane, Air Force, San Diego St., USC



Note that each year has four P5 opponents, including TWO at home. Most of these P5 games would be good, but beatable opponents.



It also includes a NATIONAL SCHEDULE. In just 5 years, BYU would play road games in California(x5), Idaho(x2), Utah (x2), Colorado (x3), Arizona, Washington; Texas (x3), Oklahoma; Florida(x2), Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana; North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland; Pennsylvania, Ohio, Connecticut, and Wisconsin.

To get these schedules, you simply cancel ALL future G5 games and replace them with an expanded AAC schedule (including Boise St., San Diego St., and Air Force in BYU's division).



The only other changes were to push back the Washington St. road trip (again), switch the Washington series to 2019 in Provo and 2020 in Seattle, and push back (or cancel) the remaining 4 games in the weird Arizona series.



With these schedules would also come:



1) The ability to compete for the AAC conference championship;



2) A direct path to a New Year's bowl game;



3) A bowl lineup that would likely include:

-Las Vegas Bowl (v. PAC 12)

-Armed Forces Bowl in Dallas (v. B1G/Big 12)

-Military Bowl in Maryland (v. ACC)

-Birmingham Bowl (v. SEC)

-Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego (v. MWC)

Good--but isn't it just the stuff of fantasy? Since canceling all P5 teams in favor of some kind of scheduling agreement with the AAC something that is not likely to happen? I wouldn't complain about it but don't see that emerging as a reality.

We have heard that BYU's contracts all have an option to cancel if BYU joins a conference - so, BYU would have to cancel (or postpone) about 15 games against some MWC teams (Utah St., Hawaii, Fresno, UNLV and SJSU), UMass, NIU, and Toledo. That's only 1 or 2 games against each of these programs, except for Utah St. and UMass. Not that big of a deal.



The P5 games would almost entirely remain intact, except for the switch in the Washington series and pushing back the Washington St. road trip and Arizona series.

Well, join a conference with a certain number of P5 teams in it--not just another G5 conference. I'll look for the reference--but they aren't just "join a conference" outs.

They can cancel without penalty if they join a conference which has at least 4 members of a current P5 conference. So if the Big 12 broke up for example, BYU could join the leftovers and be able to cancel assuming at least 4 teams are in the leftovers.

Although, I wonder if this is BYU's standard conference cancellation clause - or whether BYU has a difference clause in its G5-game contracts....??

Good question. I don't know the answer there.
