Latest Line BYU vs Mizzou

As of this morning (Tues.), the latest line in the BYU vs Mizzou game is -



Betonline: BYU to win by 5 points.

5Dimes: BYU to win by 4.5 points

SportsBetting: BYU to win by 5 points.



It's a toss-up.

24 hours later (Wed.) the line has moved. As of today -



Betonline - BYU by 6.5 points

5Dimes - BYU by 6.5 points

SportsBetting - BYU by 6.5 points.



I hope the Cougs don't run into a buzz-saw. Go Cougs!

I think BYU blows the Tigers right out of Arrowhead. This could look like the Wagner game again, at least with our D lined up against their O.



Here is Mizzou's points scored this season:

vs. Southeast Missouri = 34

@ Arkansas State = 27

vs. UCONN = 9

@ UK = 13

vs. South Carolina = 24

vs. Florida = 3

@ UGA = 6

@ Vandy = 3

vs. MissSt = 13.



That is downright abysmal. They scored more than 13 points in two FBS games. More than 10 in only 4. I don't think all the kumbayah in the world gets them outscoring BYU this weekend, and I think the kumbayah factor is a bit oversold as not everyone was on board with the strike. If anything, I think it goes to the head of a lot of the players, and the Tigers lay an egg this weekend after all the distraction that continues.

Sno, I sure hope you are spot on with this. A lot of eyes around the country will be focused on this game, and it won't be to see if BYU can win this game. I am sure that there will be a huge touchy feel-good story about Mizzou on College Game Day and every other college football pre-game show this Saturday. I hope the only mention post-game has to do with a Cougar win over the Tigers.

Unfortunately, the cougars won't benefit as much from this as we all thought they could even a week ago. Win and everyone chalks it up to the factors Sno just laid out: Distraction and a poor year. Sadly, I don't see a lot of credit coming BYU's way.

That said, the fact that the win will make BYU 8-2 should get some folks willing to drop in a few votes in their favor.

A win gets us into the top 25, but not as highly as it would have done if we'd played last week instead.



...of course, if we play like we did last week, we're likely to lose.

But they've only given up 25+ points three times this season which makes the defense 6 for 9 is terms of Bronco's standard of 24 points or less. They should be able to keep Missouri within that target. Overall this is a really tough game to predict though. Too many variables.

Here's what Mizzou's scoring D has done (compared to the opponent's scoring average)--note that I left the FCS team out (because FCS).



Ark St. scored 20 pts, (16 below average)

UCONN scored 9 pts (10 below average)

Kentucky scored 21 pts (right at its average)

South Carolina scored 10 pts (11 pts below its average)

Florida scored 21 pts (7 points below its average)

Georgia scored 9 pts (20 pts below its average)

Vandy scored 10 pts (6 pts below its average)

Miss St scored 31 pts (3 pts below its average)



Quick and dirty math shows us that, on average, they hold team to 9.125 pts below their scoring average for the year, with a best result of 20 below and worst of no difference. So if we project those numbers onto what we might expect out of BYU (who averages 36 points a game), if they hit their average, BYU scores 27 points. If they match their best result, BYU gets to 16, if they tie their worst showing against scoring averages, BYU puts up 36.



On the flip side, Mizzou has played 4 scoring defenses ranked as high or higher than BYU: UCONN, Miss St, Vandy, and Georgia, scoring 9, 6, 3, and 13 points.



Mizzou will have to play out of their minds on both sides of the ball to make it close, much less beat BYU.
