Mizzou football players announced today they are on strike and will not play -

Per ESPN

"Black Mizzou players say they'll strike until president Tim Wolfe resigns"

A group of black members on the Missouri Tigers football team says it will stop participating in football activities until university system president Tim Wolfe resigns.

The announcement came via Twitter on Saturday night in a post by Missouri's Legion of Black Collegians. It comes after several recent racial incidents on Missouri's campus, and Wolfe under fire with how he's handled them.

"The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe 'injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere,'" the tweet says. "We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students' experiences. WE ARE UNITED!!!!!"

so they will forfeit?...

OK...

I think Mark Lyons predicted a 1-0 BYU victory against Missouri and when they looked it up in the rule book the score would go down as 1-0 if Missouri forfeits.

Personally - I think they will play. This will all get worked out - hopefully.

Oh great, another 1 point win over a poor team.I can already see the negative posters complaint about how terrible the win is.

I don't believe they will forfeit. They'll simply play the game with the players that they have. There's more honor in losing a game while short-handed, than there is in failing to show up. Also, since a forfeit is counted as a loss anyway, it is more advantageous to use the short-handed game for player development than to just throw the opportunity away. A gem or two will emerge from among the second or third string players when they get a full game's experience.

Another aside, is that they might not want to give that much of a victory to the boycotting group. It would encourage further boycotts and other stunts to follow. I say this without knowledge of whether the boycott is justified. It could be for all I know. Still, if the U of MO wants to discourage such organized rebellion in the future, then coughing up a cancelled game is the last thing they would want to do.

After pondering over this issue further, I am feeling less sympathetic toward the Missouri football team members involved in this boycott. Whatever racial grievances they claim, I see no justification for their betrayal of the team. Their loyalties to the team should be separate from, and indelible to their personal lives, including their inter-racial problems. If they cannot compartmentalize those things and show up, without baggage, to team practices and events, then they do not belong on the team. If I were their coach, I would give them a warning to cease and desist from threats of boycott, and let them know that they will be permanently dismissed from the team if they do not show up for each and every game. Missing one practice would result in the usual discipline for violation of team rules, with dismissal to follow for repeat offenders. Boycotting one game would be sufficient to warrant dismissal.

This cancerous decay in team unity and loyalty should be excised completely, no matter how many games are lost, or no matter how long it takes to recruit sufficient talent to become competitive again. Their FB program should consider a new and revised set of criteria for recruitment, selecting away from those kind of kids that harbor those kind of destructive issues.

Just my two cents worth.

Really the only way I can see for the coach to prepare for the coming game is to take the players who aren't boycotting and fill out your depth chart. Then you prepare as if that is your team. If the players end their boycott at some point during the week they probably don't just get reinstated into their starting roles having missed team activities and game prep for playing BYU in the NFL stadium this week. It could be a huge opportunities for guys who are down the depth chart a ways to get game prep like a starter and play in a great environment. PS: I'm not making any commentary on the issues driving the boycott but simply saying as a football coach who has a game to play that is what I would do.

Not an enviable task as a coach, admin, or board in dealing with this powder keg of an issue. It will likely gain media attention thorough out the week as long as the boycott lasts.

It's simply not as simple as dismissing players from the team.

Or "moving away from recruiting "such" players. Can you imagine vetting a recruit or his family? "Uh Mrs James, do you or your son support or agree with any racial positions or are you prone to boycotting?" Um, Not a good idea.

On a selfish note, I wonder if ticket prices will drop with fears of a boycott.

I think I read somewhere, and I could be wrong so please feel free to correct me, that 42 of the 64 players on the current depth chart are african-american. I can't imagine any coach in their right mind preparing to play a D1 college football game with only 22 players available from the current depth chart. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

There are normally 100 or so players that a university has at their disposal. There is a travel depth chart and a home game roster that are different. They will have more than enough players to field an actual team. The difference is how many starters will be out of the lineup.

As to the racial issues, I'm not out there, but I read a summary and it seems like a bunch of liberal hostage taking, with very little facts happening, and a lot of emotion. They are asking for a bunch of staff to be hired (african-american) and some white presidents and staffers to be fired. It's unfortunate that these type of things happen, but I'd rather have a BYU win and a show of dominance on national tv, so I'm good with it. One kid is hunger striking, so unless he backs down he is probably going to get hospitalized and might have to be intervened by his family. It doesn't sound like the President did anything wrong, and doesn't plan on resigning.

Bunch of spoiled players throwing adult size tantrums. If the kids throws themselves on the floor kicking and screaming, the last thing you do is give in to the tantrum.

The picture I seen of the protesting players looked to be around 15-20. Is it really 42 players that are involved in this protest?

The university president should just pull their scholarships. Don't give into them trying to exploit relatively minor things for their gain.

Jay Drew tweeted that Tim Wolfe Missouris president does not plan on stepping down. Does anyone know exactly how man players are involved and how many are starters? I think the players will be playing this weekend, once they see there threats are not going to work they will cave and come back begging to play. It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff handles the players.

Apparently Coach Pinkel is backing the black players.

COLUMBIA — Coach Gary Pinkel and Missouri's white players appear on board with a protest the football team's black players announced Saturday.

Pinkel tweeted a photo Sunday morning including him and nearly 100 players and assistant coaches — black and white — at the team's training complex.

"The Mizzou Family stands as one," the tweet says. "We are united. We are behind our players. GP"

Well, can MU back down to institutional blackmail before the game has to be declared a win by default to BYU?

If I was a MU football player, this seems to be an easy out to such a terrible year.

I wonder if they were kicking butt, how many players were be jumping on this bandwagon?

How long will this affect the relationship between the administration and the football team, including coaches?

I've looked a little into what is going on, but I couldn't find much of what the players are willing to boycott for. The artlcle list:
  • black students being called racist slurs

the sudden removal of graduate student health insurance subsidies in August

MU's cancellation of Planned Parenthood contracts

the swastika drawn with human feces

It also talks about the dude doing the hunger strike and what he lists as the problems:
Butler posted a letter to Facebook saying that since taking Wolfe took office in 2012, “there have been a slew of racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. incidents that have dynamically disrupted the learning experience for marginalized/underrepresented students at the University of Missouri.”

I haven't found any specifics to those accusations, but, then again, I haven't looked all that hard, though I did read that somebody did call somebody the n word on campus.

Personally, I see very little or no good coming of this.

Added:

From another link:
For those that may be unaware of how this all began, there was an incident in one of the Missouri dorms where a swastika was found that was constructed with feces. From there, a graduate student from the school went on a hunger strike until Wolfe is no longer the president. Everything has been snowballing from that point, and that of course included the statement from the Missouri football players.

This is a picture of the protesting players. ESPN was using a picture last night showing a lot less players. The article I got this pic from said that 58 of the 84 scholarship players are involved. There is also a 1 million dollar fine to the team that forfeits. There are some reporters who are around the program that believe Missouri will try and play the game no matter what.

The way MO has played this year, some might think they've not showed up for weeks already....in Jr. High if one team didn't have enough we'd let them have a few of ours. Maybe BYU can offer a few of our guys? :)

It is difficult to see any good coming from this. If the university gives in they may as well give up the institution because the protesters and students will take it over or at least become more powerful in setting rules and policies. It may not be safe for non protesters to attend Mizzou. If the players give in they'll be laughed at and not just by their campus. It's nation wide now or may soon be. I'm surprised Sharpton and Jackson haven't shown up.

I read that the coach, who I believe is with the protesters, is making over 3 million while the president is around $450,000 so maybe part of this is already about who really runs things.

Hunger strikes may have accomplished some good. They may also be super sulking.

Nothing good can come from this because nothing good comes from negotiating with terrorists.
