BYU vs Alaska

I think ACU could beat Alaska but we had a lot harder time against Alaska even though KC and Fisher played. The team looked sloppy most of the game. They can pass but too many of them wanted to huck up 3s instead of passing for a better shot even though 3s weren't falling. After watching this game I think I'd take Calvert over Fisher because he works at the whole game. Fisher's shots finally started falling so he ended up as the leading scorer. Toolson didn't seem to ever get in the game. Shaw, to me, played about the best game. He hit all 4 of his shots and got 7 rebounds but he did other things to keep the ball in play.

Shaw reminds me of Sharp a bit---tons of effort, does lots of good things, but doesn't necessarily pass the eye test. However, he's young and shows a lot of potential if he could get more in control of everything.

Shaw has important advantage of being stronger now than sharp ever was.

General observations:



KC looked rusty but he is by far the most talented player we have. He took two three an missed both, but his stroke looked good. He is doing a full on jumpshot and a his free throw stroke looked even smoother. Good this we have a little more time for him to come around.



Emery is still a little wild but he is our only other player gets into the paint consistently. He is has crazy range like Fisher but his defense was all over the place.



Shaw and Hartsock showed flaws, inexperience and talent. If one of the bigs in front of them isn't producing these guys will be able to step in and provide something.



Fischer is heading towards my personal doghouse. He is just such a poor passer. Whenever his defensive focus isn't 100% he gets better.



Sejalass(sp?) had the same strengths and weakness as before. His perimeter man D is terrible. He can shoot and play off-the ball D.



Toolson had some good post ups but seemed to pass every other opportunity up.

Fischer has almost always been in my doghouse. I just don't like a guy who instead of making a serious attempt at a fast break layup is trying to sell the foul and get an and one. Quit throwing back your dumb head and play some solid basketball already. I guess he's just getting ready to play in europe already. He's a below average FT shooter for his size and BYU has an entire team of players who can hit the three. I'd rather give his minutes to Calvert or Toolson or ainge for that matter who plays some defense and is quick.



Shaw has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.



Seljaas I'm still a little undecided on, should become a good player, would be nice to see him develop a game a little closer to Wiltjer of Gonzaga vs his current one dimensional game of jacking threes every time down the court.



This BYU team simply does not have an inside out or outside in game. Robert Anae looks as creative as Willy Wonka compared to the Dave Rose Offense of "pass until a somewhat open 3 presents itself" offense, at least that's what I've seen in the 2 exhibition games.



BYU has some decent post players who could be developed if BYU ever got them the ball. Why run your bread and butter during exhibition games? "If I were coach" scenario - why not pound the post nearly every posession against these teams and develop the team a bit? Tired of living by the three and dying by the three (and this is coming from a guy who considers himself a above average 3 point shooter and certainly appreciates the 3 ball).



Could be a frustrating year as teams in the WCC know they simply have to get back and defend the perimeter.



I'd say this team has a 50/50 shot at tournament.



I don't know if I'd go to BYU if I was taller than 6-7 and actually wanted to play in the post occasionally.

I didn't see the game. But I think any performance needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Kaufusi, Aytes, and Davies were all out. Hard to have an inside out game when your inside players are on the bench.



This is a young team and we'll see sloppy play as they gel. The schedule affords them such as long as they don't assume because they are playing a "lesser" team they don't have to put in the effort. Alaska never should have been so close even with a third of the team injured.



I agree Fischer is overrated. The pretend fouls bother me to know end too. It's a Dellawhatever play - a less athletic player trying to trick the refs. If your game relies on trickery, something is wrong with your game.

Yeah it looks like Fischer is just going to jack up 3s all game and all season long, whether he's on fire or not. Collinsworth I trust will get back to his normal self. Yes, we missed a ton of 3s, but we also missed a ton of layups. Mostly contested layups, but it just seemed like we couldn't finish at the rim. Having two bigs out hurt us, but neither are dominant. I would have liked to have seen Calvert get more minutes. He had the third best PER/Min.

Thanks for posting this again. I thought Shaw did well and this shows it. My impression is that he was out to play basketball while some of the others were playing horse. Hartsock also did well. Austin tied for most rebounds so he is doing what he's supposed to. Fischer getting 18 looks good until you see he only got 4 out of 13 to go in therefor giving the other team 9 chances to get the ball. Emery only got 3 of 10 but did play ok otherwise. Same for KC, poor percentage but did other things well including 6 of 8 at the free throw line. I too would like to see Calvert get more minutes.
