Okay, It's Out of Hand.

Guys, seriously--this nitpicking and see-sawing back and forth between posters of different opinions is getting very old. Very fast. It now crops up in nearly every new thread and runs for pages involving the same players. This goes for not just first-timers or day-to-day posters, but to a number of moderators as well--I'm probably guilty of it a time or two myself. In fact, the same "Optimists" vs. "Realists" flame war seems to get resurrected every couple of years.



All that said, get over it--you have differences of opinion that have proven irreconcilable. The forum is littered with threads devolving into discussions about degrees of fandom and whether we should be satisfied or hungry for more. All that is accomplished is that other posters are turned off and less-inclined (like me) to peruse new threads because they all are the same domestic dispute over who loves the kids more.



Next time try acknowledging "Well, I guess we have a different perspective on that and I'm okay with that and secure in my own opinion, but see where you are coming from and glad to see your enthusiasm for the team. Go Cougs!!"



Get over yourselves, admit that fandom allows for different manifestations of support and enthusiasm as well as different expectations. The site is more fun when it's devoted to what we have in common--let's try to keep it that way.

I don't personally post a ton. Generally, just my frustrations in game threads.

I actually enjoy reading the back and forths, arguing, debates. Even if it about petty things.

If everyone shared the same opinion or simply avoided the topics that cause controversy and division that would make this place very bland and boring.

I understand you're not saying you can't have differing opinions. But if I share my point of view on a matter I welcome a post telling me why I could be wrong.

And I have no problem with disagreement. My issue is the differences in opinion that degenerate into animosity and then taint threads for months on end. Like I said, this happens every couple of years, and we just apply the brakes and remember the common bond underneath the differences in opinion.

To me when it degenerates to name calling it's gone too far.

The back and forths are fine. It's just when the same back and forths go from thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread to thread.



Save that for the offseason :P



I do like the differences of opinion. I just don't need the late Cougarbib reminding me in each thread that we've over scheduled and shouldn't agree to 2-1. Once I knew his opinion on that I didn't need to be reminded each day. He had good things to say outside of that.

I'm still pretty new here and have enjoyed the exchange with those who have different thoughts and ideas even if the opinions don't agree. I also have felt so far like the discussion and debate stays respectful and civil almost all the time. For me at least it's been very refreshing. At the same time, I agree that it's good to not let things get out of hand. I started coming here in large part because another popular site I think does too often get out of control with the fighting and animosity. That's just not my thing, so I needed a new home to get my talk about BYU sports.

I look at cheering for the Y much like cheering for one of my boys' team. Win or lose, I cheer for my team and I try to cheer loudly, In my mind, they are not to lose, but after they lose, I try to forget about that lose and I'm back in my homer mode.



But because of my depression, sometimes it takes time for me to get back in that mode after a loss. Stress is not my friend. In fact, stress is my friend without the "r," IOW, it's my fiend.



Sometimes, if it's just me by myself, I have to turn the TV off, get up, go lay down on my bed, and read my Drizzt/Brandon Sanderson books. I have also been known to get off the bed, turn the TV back on, and, if the game is close or BYU is ahead, I sit back down and watch it.



I know better than most what reality is, but I try really hard to forget about it and go live in my fantasy world, one where BYU wins all the time and the coaches are great coaches and the team members are the bestest of the bestest. They all try their bestestes.



When BYU started to break the top 25 in the mid 70s, the student body went crazy, even if BYU lost. We didn't demand they be perfect, just to do their best and I hope that latter attitude doesn't become the norm. I don't want to have a team like Alabama or the old Florida. It takes all the fun out of the game, but I want a good team, a team which only loses only a couple a year at the most.



BYU has a handicap in recruiting because of the Honor Code, but the recruits we get tend to be better than average.



I work at the Kennedy Space Center, when BYU does great, it gets attention. How can a school with such strict standards do so well.? When the guy was kicked of the basketball team headed to the playoffs several years ago because of Honor Code violation, people were shocked, but they told me they were impressed that BYU did what it stood for. They were also impressed when he was back on the team the next year. They realized that at BYU, there are consequences for actions and they also realize that there is also forgiveness at BYU. That puts BYU, and the Church, in an awesome light, and that is what it's all about.



And don't tell me about reality. I've seen it and it ain't pretty. It looks too much like Schmoe. :bug: :bug: :bug:

I love Sanderson books as well. Hadn't heard of The Drizzt series before, so I'm going to check those out too.



Speaking of the thread topic: I think the key is to avoid the name calling like someone already mentioned. And it's ok to acknowledge when someone you may not like does a good job every once in a while (coach, player, or fellow-poster).
