Which scenario is better for BYU's future?

1) the big 12 comes close again, but gets shut out of the playoffs, because Utah takes the last spot



Or



2) a Big 12 team gets into the playoffs instead of Utah?

I had to hold my gag Reflex and vote for Utah to shut out the Big12. Even though that hurts recruiting in the short term, I think it might be one of the few things that forces the Big 12 to action, adding new, quality teams to their conference. Of course best case would be for both the Big12 and Utah to get shut out :evil:

How would we all feel if Utah gets into the playoffs and the BIG12 does expand but it once again isn't BYU they turn too? What a depressing thought!

I agree, I don't like either situation and would hope for neither the big12 nor Utah getting into the playoffs. Unfortunately, where things stand today they are both poised to be in the playoffs. Luckily there is a lot of football left to be played.

Maybe it is all talk ... but when we keep hearing from Bronco and Holmoe that BYU is trying to play any big school that will play us, in as many different locations as possible to spread the message of the school/church ... do they REALLY want a Big 12 invite?

I thought they were doing it for a Big12 invite.



I'd like some more Big12 teams and beat them.

Big 12 is about the only realistic option outside of independence. Yes, they want into the Big12 so they can remain relevant and compete financially so they can continue to spread the message. If independence were not so fraught with questions and instability, I'm sure they would be pushing for continued independence

Easy there, guys. Not to hijack the thread, but I think much of the friction on the board comes from squabbling about whether we should be "realistic" about the team's ceiling and blue-goggled about their progress toward it (me) or blue-goggled about what the program can accomplish and realistic about where they are now (KingCoug). I think we all wear the googles sometimes; it just depends on what we're looking at.



As to the OP's questions, I hope the Utes make the playoff because I want my brother-in-law's national championship hopes to get as high as possible before they come crashing down. I wouldn't mind if they lost this week, but that wouldn't hurt as much as a playoff loss to your former coach (tOSU) or to an Alabama team that actually cares about the game this time around.

So in your "real" world that you live in, all it would take is for the the Utes airplane to fall out of the sky to make it all better for you? Like that wouldn't make it "easier that way" as you like to put it. Yeah, no issues. If you say so guy.

Good point ... independence sometimes gets us games with Wagner ... but it also got us the toughest schedule in the nation. We are seeing good teams accept scheduling with us. I guess I'm wondering if we aren't starting to see some of the stability you referenced. Right now, do you think the powers that be would prefer Big 12 or independence?

"Things as they really are"? You're pathetic and ridiculous! You won't be happy unless BYU wins multiple national championships (and even then, you'd complain that we didn't beat team X by enough points, etc.). It has nothing to do with seeing things in a certain way, it has to do with enjoying what we have. Every single poster here can see that our team isn't perfect and isn't the best in the country, the difference is that some of us can still have fun and enjoy the ride (and we can talk about the issues the team has without being completely negative and joyless). This is what I was talking about before, you seem to think you're the only one who recognizes that the Cougars aren't perfect, and dwelling on that makes you feel important or smart or something (otherwise, why would you choose to be so miserable?), but to the rest of us, you just look like a sad, sorry old cuss.

I can't vote on this poll, just can't do it. No scenario with the utes in the playoffs is acceptable to me. Time for USC to realize the talent they have and put it on the field so all this talk about the utes in the playoffs can all come to a close.

Unless BYU gets an invite to the nothing-to-do-with-twelve Big 12 the program will slowly become irrelevant. Independence is great as far as TV rights and playing schools everywhere, but it's bad for getting into the playoffs and bad for casual fans.



I am all in favor of whatever scenario sets us up for a Big 12 invite and the Big 12 getting rejected once again because they don't have a conference champion accelerates the likelihood of a Big 12 invite.



I sincerely hope should such an invite come, BYU doesn't reject it under the notion that as an independent football is a better missionary tool. Being part of the Big 12 sets BYU up better in the long run. Right now, things may be rosey as an independent but if the team continues to flirt with mediocrity it won't be so rosy in future. Applying current circumstances to the future is always a bad idea. Things change.
