BYU coaches and adjustments

I think we can put to bed the argument that BYU's coaches don't make adjustments. Bronco's defensive adjustments shut a really good offensive team OFF after the 1st quarter. The offense looked good once Mangum settled down. Another week where Robert Anae looked like a really good play caller again this week. Funny how that happens when you have a really good QB running the offense.

Was going to post the same thing. Bronco stated that his first Q defensive plays were NOT working. He scratched them out and started over to get favorable matchups. Superb job by coaching staff tonight.



Loved that the receivers played with urgency (drops notwithstanding) and didn't let DBs rough them up at the line



RBs played awesome. Peeling off great runs left and right. Hopefully Burt makes a timely recovery. Really like the way he runs.



Defense was lights out minus first Q which Bronco takes credit for.



All around great effort. FUN game to watch.

Ditto to everything. The players are resilient -- Receivers didn't let drops get in their heads, Mangum didn't let early bad throws get to him, and defense didn't let early struggles get them down. And I think that's an attitude that reflects the leadership both on and off the field.



BTW: Can anyone think of a season that has been as much fun as this one? Despite the losses, I don't think I've had as much fun being a Cougar fan since 2001 (maybe, maybe 2006, maybe).

The Cardiac Cougs! I'm gonna have to reduce the bacon in my diet if I want my heart to make it through this season.

You can't put them to bed after one game. But it was refreshing to see them. At least they were more obvious tonight.



What I am pleased with is our 2nd half production. For as long as I can recall, at least in recent memory over the last decade, we seemed to be a 1st half team. But like I said, we need to fix these slow starts because we will have a much harder time coming back from 14 down against a better team - especially on the road.

HUGE credit to Bronco and the defense. Best performance and adjustment all season. Proved yet again why Bronco is a defensive master and why he must stay as a DC as tough as it is to do both HC and DC. I'm sure part of it was the Cincy Oline wearing down at elevation and relentless pressure, but wow,I can't wait to re-watch the game after having seen it live.

Now the O, I'm not sure I can beleive they adjusted that much. Whoosh, Robert O just kept doing what he does; TMan's throws were just off--maybe Bc of resting this week and losing fine tuning as much as the injury itself?? The Oline was dominant sometimes and average at others. It's so interesting that it has taken six games to get Riely Burt up to speed?? And nice to finely see some hint of a return game on ST. But maybe there was a second half adjustment by Anae to go back to short doable passes to get rhythm and that there were too many shots deep in first half? Too many dropped balls for sure.

And I loved loved loved Bronco going after the rediculous if not phantom defensive holding/PI in the end zone. Bronco demanded an explanation from the back judge and not just the head judge and the dude had to come all the way across the field after the extra point to explain.but Bronco wasnt looking for an explanation and he lectured the ref and even pointed at him as if to say "I'm going to report you for that". I loved it!! I swear it was like watching remember the Titans when the Asst coach confronted the cheating ref and it changed the reffing, BC I think it did. Cincy DBs were constantly doing little dirty or cheap crap,including holding, all game long to our WRs. Anyway, LOVED that about Bronco. I have to watch replay but I don't think there was any hold there and it could have been a game changing call as they went up 17-3 and all of us shuttered a bit knowing Cincys explosiveness. The fact they only scored one more time is amazing. Broncos boys held Cincy to what, must be 150 yards under their average? And 20 points under their average?? HUGE. So cool that the whole D got the MVP on KSL. 9 sacks! And Cincy had only given up 6 all year to date. Awesome!

So, Ya, credit the coaches adjustments!

TM was not using his hamstring in the first half. In the second half he was pushing off with it and had better velocity on his throws and accurate again. That was what made the difference. the slow start was because of the injury. No accuracy on his throws.

Then you haven't been paying attention to the 2015 season. This wasn't just one game we've seen this kind of adjustments in-game. We've seen this in just about every game - and they've worked in every game as well.



We changed the offense on the fly against Nebraska when Taysom went down. We figured out how to move the ball and stop the opponent against Boise. Same for UConn, ECU and Cincinnati.



The ONLY game where the adjustments didn't work was Michigan.



I'm not really surprised that you're upset that BYU just came back from 14-points down in two straight games. BYU has just accomplished something unprecedented under Bronco - coming back from down two touchdowns. And they've done it in consecutive weeks and you still aren't satisfied.



I stand by my assessment of a few weeks ago. You don't enjoy BYU victories. You get a much more enjoyable emotional response to BYU losses so you actively seek out negative points to harp on following wins.

You're high on something if you honestly think I get enjoyment of ANY kind out of a loss. I HATE BYU losing like few people I know. I'm never been one of those "Oh darn, hope we do better next time" fans.



Meanwhile, I enjoy when we win BUT I keep things in perspective.



On one hand, it's been impressive to see us come back from 14 down two games in a row and be so good in the 2nd half. However on the other hand, while the rest of you are hooting it up, I actually recognize these slow starts could bite us in the butt in future games.



On one hand, it will feel OK to be 6-2 after next week, all things considered. In fact, I was the one predicting we would be when the bye week rolled around. On the other hand, I haven't forgotten us being ABSOLUTELY HUMILIATED by Michigan on the ABC Game of the Week. I realize many of you have lowered the bar and your expectations for BYU, apparently just for the sake of being "happy," but I haven't. I actually recognize that beating a few AAC teams at home but getting shut out by Michigan on the road shows we still have a hard time CONSISTENTLY competing with the Big Boys. You see, I actually want and expect us - at least occasionally when things line up right, like 2006 and 2009 - to take advantage of the situation and do better than just a 10 or 11 win season and finishing somewhere in the Top 25. You seem to be satisfied with forever falling short but I'm not.

KingCoug, perhaps you should take a step back and look at things from others' perspectives. After our last loss, you started something like four or five threads and were posting left and right. You seemed elated, excited, and giddy to be able to badmouth the coaches. You claimed that you gave coaches all the credit for a win, but haven't once done it. After a win, you post very little and seem subdued, melancholy, and disappointed. You can claim that you feel however you want, and perhaps it's true, but no one will believe it unless your actions (posts, in this case) show it.

I am repenting this week and will be nicer to the likes of KingCoug, the multi-millionaire CEO with 10 posts MontanaCoug, BraydenGreene, and others who seem so similar in their comments and posting style. I appreciate your passion and your message has been heard loud and clear (at least by me). This coaching staff is inadequate for you to reach the pinnacle of fandom as a BYU fan. You were embarrassed as a fan on the national ABC stage a few weeks back against Michigan. Believe me, it wasn't much fun in person that day in The Big House, but as I type this the Wolverines are working on 14 straight quarters of shutout football. Hmmmmmmmm............ I have been more impressed with this team and what the entire coaching staff has accomplished under these circumstances then at any other time in a long, long time. Is it perfect? Foolish to even pose the question. Has it been a commendable, fun, ánd entertaining season so far? Absolutely! You won't find any poster here who would argue that there isn't room for improvement, but you will find many who tire of the glass is ALWAYS half-empty mentality.

I was going to offer to buy those guys some lunch, but I was worried that they'd complain that it might give them heartburn or diarrhea in the future, or complain that they've had better lunches before, long ago.



It must be really difficult giving them gifts, imagine if they won a new car on a gameshow ("Man, this sucks, something on it might have to be fixed sometime...").

Those of you who think the offense did not adjust ... did you watch the same game I was at?



I had the very good fortune to be sitting with players and their families. And there were several of us in the area commenting in the 2nd quarter that someone saw something ... because the play calls changed. Not a whole new set of calls, but the subtle changes that means the game plan got refined because of something the defense was giving us in the game. After 19 yards in the first quarter (yes, dropped passes were crucial in causing that) ... things started moving in the 2nd quarter. I was actually a little surprised, and very happy it happened. I have known Bronco values being able to make adjustments during the game and he's talked about how the really good teams don't only make adjustments at half-time; but I haven't thought Anae did that. I have criticized him for not making adjustments. Last night he made adjustments early, and made the right adjustments.



I was very impressed by the coaching staff last night.



I was very proud of the team that kept playing hard.



Those defensive adjustments, combined with a ton of heart by the players lead to an outstanding defensive showing. The offensive adjustments, combined with great heart, lead to the team overcoming a deficit. And we got to see some really great plays! I don't recall seeing BYU use the jet sweep before ... and it was great last night.



Good adjustments.

In the end what the whiners can't deny is that we are 5-2 against a top 10 or 15 schedule, AND this after losing our heismanesque QB in the first game our soon to have been all time leading RB for the whole season, our best defensive player for key games, and enduring key suspensions and even more injuries..and still win tough tough games, coming from behind again and again and again. This team has adjusted, made do, and evolved and that effort and the succesful results start with the coaches. Those persons who rant when the team loses and can say nothing more than the team could have done better when they win is not a fan in my book. Just a bitter bystander.

One thing I like is that this team won't give up when down and I expect it to be that way for a few years with TM at the helm.
