Since today is Columbus Day and I'm employed by Uncle Sam, I have day off. I'm listening to BYU Sports Nation and was hoping they would say something about Mangum, but the only thing I've heard so far is their telling him not to do stairs around campus, to only use elevators or wheelchairs.

So, does anybody around here have the skinny on Tanner.

My guess is we don't know. My guess is he doesn't practice much this week. My guess is Beau Hoge gets almost all practice reps this week. My guess is Mangum is a game time decision. My guess BYU doesn't announce much of anything in regards to his status or injury.

What do you mean by "employed" by Uncle Sam?

Did Bronco say anything at his noon press conference or whatever?

Yes, he said everyone injured against ECU is probable for Cincy.

He works for NASA in Florida. I think he flies test missions with the monkeys, It explains the black eyes. Monkeys can be tough.

As noted by Spiff, we won't know for certain until game time on Mangum. Generally Bronco is smart enough to not state much more than "probable" because there is no reason to. I hope he makes it, but hoping in one thing and reality is often another.

Agreed, would be a baptism by fire for Hoge. I didn't think he looked too bad on a few of his passes. I know one of them was dropped that stalled one of those 4th Q drives. Certainly, it wasn't a confidence building quarter for Hoge. Hope he can get ready for Friday if needed.

Algie Brown dropped a critical third down conversion pass. Everything kindof went downhil for Hoge from there. Hoge looks like he could be a gamer. Hopefully he's got some of his butterflies out.

I don't want to say bad things about our backup QB but it was obvious that he was not ready to play. When I say not ready, he doesn't know the offense. He is what we thought all our backups would be until Mangum came in and blew us all away. I hope we don't see him again for the rest of the year. He needs to develop. If he has to play instead of Mangum on Friday, we lose that game and the offense looks terrible. If I am wrong and he comes out and has a great game, I think we can put to bed the "Anae is a horrible Ocoordinator" arguments.

I expect him to play a lot of the Wagner game. I wish it was this week.

Yep, when you lose your starting QB and the rest of your guys are true freshmen, and you just happen to be lucky enough to have your backup be an Elite 11 MVP, and you're trying to break that guy in and get him plenty of reps so you can open up the playbook more, and all your games have been tight with virtually no "garbage time" to get the next guy any reps, the third-string guy probably isn't going to be game-ready for D-I play.

My hope now is that BYU can somehow beat Cincy by 1) resting Mangum; this would mean starting Hoge and likely entail an extremely run-heavy offense designed to run out the clock as quickly as possible, limiting the Bearcats offensive opportunites or 2) playing Mangum as little as possible; this too could likely entail an extremely run-heavy offense.

I would then also like Mangum to be rested completely against Wagner. Give him that week and the by week to do nothing but rehab. This would also give Hoge even more experience and live reps to help prepare him better for the future.

It's too bad we had to burn Hoge's redshirt year if Mangum is good to go from here on out.

Yeah, looking at how Navy manhandled ECU, I was hoping we'd see an option package with someone like Juergens taking snaps. Would have been useful there, but it's probably too high-risk to implement in a week's time.

BYU isn't good enough to Beat Cincy in your scenario. We need Mangum being Mangum. Hoge isn't ready to beat a team as good as Cincy which IMO is the second most difficult game left on our schedule.

One thing that gives me hope for Mangum being at least similar in health as he was to finish the game was he didn't pull up lame on the scramble where he got hurt and immediately grab the back of his leg.

Maybe the injury wasn't too serious?

When I rewatched the play he does look like he tightens up a few steps before the slide and thus makes the slide look awkward.

Which makes me think, we have seen injuries to QBs before from slides. I wonder if sliding really is the safest/best alternative we have. Some situations it may be best to slide, but to slide as a matter of course nearly every positive gain doesn't rest well with me. I do like it better than the jake heaps days when the slide occurred in the backfield in the fetal position
