Taysom won't return to BYU as the starting QB

IF he does come back to BYU it will be as a backup to Tanner Mangum or at another position.



Sometimes you DO lose your starting job due to injury. Sometimes even all-time greats and borderline Hall of Famer's lose their job due to injury.



Tom Brady took over for an injured Drew Bledsoe and the Patriots never looked back. Bledsoe is Top 10 all-time in yards and completions and Top 20 in touchdowns.



Steve Young took over for an injured Joe Montana and the 49ers never looked back. Montana is considered one of the best all-time



Sometimes losing your starting job isn't an reflection on your skills, talent or potential. It just is time for the team to move on.



At his current rates, Mangum is going to finish this season with over 3,000 yards passing (and will likely be pretty close to 3,500 yards passing). He is likely going to finish the season with close to 25 touchdown passes. He will likely complete more than 300 passes.



Taysom has been a pretty good quarterback for BYU. He's as dynamic an athlete as BYU has ever had at any position. But Mangum is going to be the entrenched starter following this season. And he is only going to get better.



If Taysom wants to play again for BYU, and if I were the coach, I would move him to another position to get him on the field. But my QB going forward is Mangum.



I wouldn't trade three years of Mangum for one year of Taysom.

I'm not convinced. I think if Taysom returns at 100% (that's a really big if), he will end up taking Mangum's job. I think the coaches would allow there to be a quarterback competition, and I think Taysom would still win a truly open competition going into Mangum's second year. It could be a very ugly situation if Taysom wants it bad enough.

You think he's going to beat out Mangum? Or do you think Mangum will just step aside?

I think he will beat out Mangum on the overall package, but it will be close. I don't think Mangum just steps aside.

He's not coming back, but if he were, it would be as the starting QB. He's just better than Tanner, and that's pretty amazing to say.



And, yes, when Montana was hurt, the 49ers went to Steve Young, but the coaching staff promised Montana that if he re-signed, he would be the starter and they'd trade Young. Seifert flew out to Montana's home to try and bring him back. Montana decided to sign with KC, and the rest is history.



Crazy 24 hours that was.

It seems to me that one day some team is going to be really good.....really good.....with two equally strong quarterbacks whose strengths, while equal, lie in varied aspects of the game. That team will have a creative OC that can sense the nuance of the game at hand and switch between fast, hard football, and methodical artistry. Each QB with his own unit of backs and receivers. And inserted in a random order that keeps opposing defenses always guessing.



It will change the game just like the introduction of the west coast offense did.



Maybe that's BYU next year.



Now I'll go to sleep and dream even bigger

Everything I've heard from folks close to Taysom is that, if he does come back for another year of football, it won't be in Provo. He's done with that chapter in his life, but will support his teammates 110% through this season and wait until after the regular season to make the decision public.



His primary goal is to set up his career in finance, and Stanford, Cal, Harvard, Northwestern, UCLA, and Michigan (to just name a few) all offer higher ranked Masters of Finance programs than BYU with better career placement options. If he can use his talents to help him make the jump to a top notch Masters program on scholarship, I think he makes that jump with no regrets.

I hope he comes back as a qb. He looked like an unstoppable force in the Nebraska game. If he doesn't I really hope it's not due to feeling welcome. Based on Broncos statements I can't imagine he wouldn't welcome him.



If I'm Tanner I might even look at as sort of a positive. QBs don't seem to make it 3 yrs without a major injury in college. Let Taysom take some of the hits for Tanner while both are playing for free. Tanner was already willing to share/give up a year with Taysom. He'd just be doing it in a different order. (Yeah maybe this is crazy talk)

It's not a slam on Taysom. Taysom was amazing.



But I would take Tanner as the starting QB over Taysom any day.

Agreed. We would have annihilated UCLA with Taysom.

I'd rather have 4 (or 3 if he goes pro) straight years of Tanner than one more of Taysom. I love Taysom and the athlete that he was, but the team has to have continuity at the quarterback position and - more importantly - if Robert Anae is still coaching the offense next year he needs to decide what the hell kind of offense he wants to have for the next X years, and he needs to recruit for that - starting with the offensive line and our non-existent tight end situation. There is no guarantee that Taysom will stay healthy under a full year of Robert Anae.



He's going to Michigan. If anywhere.

I'm disappointed we did not get to see Taysom against Michigan. Assuming that he is healthy, I think he does not want to end his career that way. He's super competitive and that will be eating at him. His wife is 100% supportive. Not sure where though. He can help us beat the top teams. Tanner is not there yet.

Ya, so would Anae. ANAE knows he lacks the creativity to be a great OC. Taysom, at full strength (few with a LF actually make it back), creates the very element that ANAE lacks. He makes plays, saves drives, and keeps a D guessing and honest.

I've said it before, if Taysom Hill comes back to BYU he should be our starting QB. that is not a knock on Tanner, it is just what it is. Tanner is going to be really good, probably going to smash every BYU passing record if he stays healthy but Taysom Hill is an athlete that BYU has never had and may never get again. Having said that, I don't think we will see Taysom Hill in a BYU uniform again. He either tries his luck in the NFL draft or does a graduate transfer to another school as has been suggested.

Doubtful Taysom will be back but, even if he was, you stick with Mangum. He's the future and you don't interrupt his progression for a guy who would likely get hurt again anyway. To do so would be shortsighted.

Everything I've read lately was speculation about whether he would go somewhere for 1 more year as a graduate transfer (assuming he gets a redshirt for this year) or that he hangs up the cleats to focus on career. I'd be surprised if he stuck around BYU for another year unless he was enrolling here for grad school.

That's a fine philosophy, but this is why the situation could get ugly if Taysom wants it bad enough. This could get much worse than our previous qb controversy. If BYU starts to get steam rolled by a team like Michigan next year, and the coaches refuse to put Taysom in because they don't want to jeopardize the hypothetical junior and senior years of Mangum, fans will accuse Bronco and Anae of being too stubborn and unwilling to change their gameplan.



You don't want to kill the future, but winning in the here and now is very important, especially being an independent.

I haven't seen anything indicating these 2 QBs would end up like the reily/heaps situation. They seem much more mature but they also haven't been in that situation before. I'd be really surprised to see it though.



If Taysom transferred to a place with a much stronger grad school program I wouldn't feel slighted at all.
