Things left to play for

I get sick of the "there's nothing left to play for after you lose one game" apologists. I thought I'd run down a list of things there's left to play for after one loss:



- NY6 Bowl Access--difficult after 2 losses, but still within the realm of possibility

- National Ranking

- To earn the respect of others

- Self respect

- Pride in your craft and reputation

- Out of respect for the fans supporting you

- To bring positive attention to the school for which you claim to be an ambassador

- To show that the loss was a fluke and you are better than that

- To not embarrass your family name that's stitched on the back of your jersey

- Because the game is a lot more fun when you're winning



Any others I'm missing?

Love of the game!

Because sports like life has huge ups and huge downs and there are two ways to handle it: give up pack it in and quit OR rise up and refuse to stay down.

As a fan, though, the air just went out on the season. Slim chance of an NY6 bowl, but for all intensive purposes we're headed to whatever no-name bowl Holmoe lined us up with.

I sure hope it's not the Hawaii Bowl, not that I wouldn't mind going to Hawaii I just don't want to do it this year in a medical boot strolling around the island on a scooter like Taysom is doing. I've been to Vegas enough that I wouldn't feel like I would be missing anything. Selfish I know.

Its either the Las Vegas Bowl or the Hawaii bowl--depending on the bowl committee's pick of matchups. Which ever BYU doesn't play in is the bowl for 2019.

The next several games are UConn, Cincinnati, East Carolina, and Wagner all in Provo--then @ San Jose State. If things go well, they could be bowl eligible before heading back out on the road. The team better bounce back from these first 4 games or now that they will probably be favored, they need to show up and get the job done.

Play to win the next game and then go from there.

A college football player can only at best hope to play 52 total games in his career. The chances of ever playing in the NFL for even the best players is astronomically slim, so this is ultimately it. If a player can't find motivation to make each game count then they shouldn't be playing.

A bowl game.



Only 12 schools have made a bowl game every year for the last 10 years. BYU is one of them.

It's a problem of college football, and not so much BYU, but going to a bowl is just going to another game. It's just a bunch of meaningless bowls where everybody .500 or above gets a trophy. Even the NY6 bowls are relatively meaningless except for a little more prestige and money.

King this might be the closest our thoughts have ever aligned :P



I love that we've earned the bowls but usually by the time they roll around I've move on with life. Like the BCS games before the NY6 games really don't mean anything as even if you stomp the other team you've already lost the popularity contest that is college football.



As far as what to play for I get totally sick of this sentiment too. You play because it's fun. Because you're a competitor. Because you're a winner and hate to lose.



You still care because you enjoy supporting a team and being entertained. Only 12 teams make a NY6 game each year and if your team has to get to 12 wins for you to enjoy the season it's going to suck to be you nearly every year.



I don't mind losing if it's entertaining but the problem with yesterday was it wasn't entertaining. With taysom and jswag out we're not supposed to win but we should still compete. (Full disclosure I was deer hunting. Maybe I jinxed us as I saw about as many deer as byu saw points.) :sick:

Sure, but it's not a new development. BYU going to this many consecutive bowl games not only means we get extra practice days and an extra game to develop our players, but it also means that we're one of a very small number of teams over the past decade that have been consistent enough to have a winning record all ten years.

That's a great statistic. Regardless of the bowl "prestige" - the Coug's are playing. Thx for the research on that one.

A winning record against MWC competition. We didn't have that last year.
