Nelson actually didn't throw an incomplete pass until the TCU game. I think he was something like 9 for 9 with a couple of TD's up until that point. Of course the only really challenging throw that he made was the TD in the FSU game, but he did have a very impressive QB rating.

Garbage time is irrelevant. Pocket presence and arm strength are.

After the Vegas Bowl I went to dinner with a few players and asked them their opinions on the QB position now that the Max Hall era is over. (I'm not going to name names out of respect for them and their privacy. Just know that two of them saw significant minutes on the field this season on offense.)



The conversation went as follows:



ME: What's your opinion on Riley Nelson as a passer-- he played a lot this season but typically handed the ball off or ran it himself during garbage time-- does he pass well?



BYU PLAYER: I love Riley, but his passing ability is definitely the weakness of his game.



ME: How so?



BYU PLAYER: He throws a wobbly ball most of the time and doesn’t have much velocity. The other quarterbacks typically throw really tight spirals that are easy to catch and make plays in rhythm.



ME: So who do you think will start next year?



BYU PLAYER: None of us have seen him play, but if all the hype is true and Heaps can come in and learn the system quickly we fully expect him to be the starter next year. Him coming in January is huge because the coaches want to name a starter at the end of spring ball.



My take…..



From what the payers are telling me, Jake Heaps has a real chance to prove himself and start early.



I’ve never seen Jake Heaps outside of highlight reels. I have seen Riley Nelson play both at Utah State and in clean up time this season. At Utah State Riley created a lot of plays with his feet ,but his throws were wobbly and hung in the air a long time. It seemed a lot of his success throwing came after creating something with his feet first.



My concern with almost any ‘running QB’ is they seem to have a run first, pass second mentality and are far to eager to tuck and run it rather than look downfield to make a play. I don’t think this bodes well for our offense.



On the other hand, I definitely think Riley Nelson is a gamer and an obvious winner. I trust the coaches will make the right decision moving forward to give the team the best chance to succeed.

If Riley is really throwing challenged, wouldn't the team be better off moving him to another position? we should have enough depth at quarterback and he could be used in trick plays.

What is Heaps' arm strength? I have not seen much on that, what kind of arm does he have?

From what I have seen he has an above average arm. It is certainly no rocket nor will it be mistaken for John Beck's. But I think it is stronger than Max Hall's. His strength is not and will not be his arm. It will be his knowledge and preparation. It will be in knowing the offense and the defensive alignments and where the proper reads are.

Under what moniker?

I posted on cougarblue under the moniker "byustud..." (short for byustudent). I frequented the site regularly and had over 200 posts. I graduated 2 years ago however so that moniker no longer applies. I posted a lot of "insider" info on that site as well. Even though i graduated I do still have a number of connections with athletics (mostly administrative) but also a few friends on the team.

Yes, because i have nothing better to do than go on message boards and leave false opinions on unproven quarterbacks.



It's not like I spilled any juicy details that we can't all see for ourselves, just a little insider info I thought some people might enjoy hearing about.



If I really wanted to stir the pot under message board annonymity I would have told you about the private conversations these players had with Harvey about him staying another year or going to the NFL (pretty funny story and quite telling actually)...... or I could have mentioned the exact reason why Kavienga left USC to come to BYU according to his interaction with players (this could become a huge recruiting advantage)..... or how bout the locker room conversations after the players were allowed to keep their throwback jerseys -- a rare instance considering the univeristy actually had to buy the jerseys and would typically auction them off (Nike normally provides them at no charge)



The fact is, I'm a huge BYU fan and I love hearing this kind of stuff and appreciate when anybody (e.g. Mcgregor) shares it with us. Hopefully you appreciate it too. If so I'll keep posting, if not I'll just observe and keep my opinions to myself.
