Hype vs Respect

Losing to UCLA killed the hype our first two wins built up, but the team certainly earned respect.

As far as the Cougars' playoff hopes are concerned, the loss to UCLA likely eliminated them from top-four consideration, but it's too harsh to call it a complete fail because it was a great game that went down to the wire. BYU isn't a top-four team, but it's certainly a top-25 team that has earned respect after hanging with UCLA on the road.

And there's the problem. They're basically saying we will be where we've already been several times since Bronco took over the program. A Top 25 team but not a playoff team. I despise the BYU fans who are content with this forever. I grudgingly accept it for now, considering the key injuries and a true freshman QB, but it will be a FAILURE and nothing to be proud of if we still can't break through that 11-2 ceiling in the next few years.

You sound like a spoiled baby. Acting like Bronco hasn't done a fantastic job of turning a bad team around extremely quickly and hasn't had us in the hunt for national rankings and top-10 finishes year in and year out. Like Bronco and company owe you something because you turn on a game or buy a ticket once in a while. Like they're not busting their asses every day to get it done and doing a great job at it. Like losing the game last night was more important to you than it was to them.



Take a step back and recognize how much harder it is for our team to garner respect due to no fault of our own. A great example this week will be that USC, Auburn, and Alabama will be ranked above us, despite losing to worse opponents by more points and having worse wins this season. Recognize that we have a much more limited recruiting pool than any other team in the country, but our coaches still manage to find world-class athletes to compete for us. College football is stacked against us and we've still managed to have great success.

There is no shame in losing by 1 point to the #10 team in the country on the road when you were a heavy underdog (vegas line was 16-17 points). There were missed opportunities, sure. They lead most of the game, Yes. There are young players at key positions--but they are playing better every game no matter who the opponent has been. And I am very encouraged by that.

BYU only slipped to #22 with the loss. That is a reasonable drop--but they can continue to climb with wins. Another great opportunity with facing Michigan in the big house.

Are you assuming there are loads of us out there that don't want to win every game? Who are they? I don't know any of your despised BYU fans.

And consider that BYU may have actually played its best game last night notwithstanding the loss. I clearly think UCLA, notwithstanding ranking, was the best team we have faced.

In many ways that was the best game we've played this year. We just played a team that was one point better. BTW, I'm also with you on if it is 4th and 7 and all I need is a first down, I'd try a pass high but not so high that Matthews the senior has a play on. Odds are he'd come down with it.

Of all the things that surprised me last night, I was shocked at how well UCLA ran the ball. Up to last night, the strength and hype of the BYU D was their run defense. UCLA rammed it down the D's throat and scored in the last 3 minutes as fast as we did when passing. Clearly the team missed Travis Tuiloma at NT and needs more DL depth on the front 3 in order to compete with a talented OL. It was somewhat reminiscent of the WI game where the OL wore down our front seven and the RBs gained large chunks of real estate. Nonetheless, being ranked #22 after the loss isn't bad, but I don't think that BYU should have dropped after leading for 53 minutes. In the end, the Y beat them statistically except on the scoreboard...more total yards, more takeaways, more first downs, more time of possession, more 3rd down conversions, etc. This team can gain more respect with continued good play against MI and MO (both whom are beatable after their showing yesterday).

I'd be interested to know what people think the records of the rest of top 25 would be had they played our starting schedule? With the losses some have had and the close calls to poor teams we have seen coming from the top 25 teams so far, I'd bet BYU would rank somewhere in the top 15 if it were possible to make that comparison.

Take out the 4 or 5 huge runs that UCLA had and its a totally different game.Maybe one of the stat guys like Spiff could break down these numbers for us?

Obviously we all want to win every game.



I'm talking about the fans who are perpetually satisfied with 10 or 11 win seasons and finishing somewhere in the Top 25.

Going undefeated and playing in a NY6 bowl isn't too much to expect. Boise State, TCU, and the Pukes all have done it.

Its not rocket science. I can usually tell what they're thinking by their posts. It's the ones who, in addition to trying to find a silver lining to every loss, are satisfied with a 10 or 11 win season and Top 25 finish. As if that's the best any BYU fan can really expect or hope for. Sure, they would like to see BYU go to a NY6 bowl or the playoffs but, if it never happens, they won't be upset or disappointed. They make me sick.

Well, there's 128 schools in Div. 1 FBS. What's not rocket science is that not everyone, or even 1 team dominate. Look at Nick Saban at Alabama. They pay him $7.1 million per year - and absolutely expect him to be playing for, and win, the National Championship every year.



I think your expectation is way over the top. It's not about being satisfied with losing or being mediocre. It's about giving it your best shot - 100% - starting with the coaching staff - recruiting - and the performance by the team in the game. The reality is, few teams have the caliber of team that can actually compete for the championship. There are about 10 teams, or less, that can actually compete for the championship. Sadly, BYU is not one of them. BYU has the caliber of team once about every 20 years to genuinely compete for a top 5 AP spot. It's just a big dose of reality, and reality bites.

I'll admit, I would be very happy to finish 11-2 and ranked. That is an improvement over the last several years. TCU, BSU, Utah and Hawaii made it to the BCS but they did not play a schedule like what we are doing. Losing our best players hurt our chances to make it a special year, but we are still in the hunt for NY6. We are on ABC twice in the first month. We are picking up some very good recruits. I prefer to be an optimist and be happy then a pessimist and angry.
