Defense Went home before game was over.

The defense went home before the game was over and allowed UCLA 14 points in the 4th quarter. After BYU 13 play 5:00 minute drive you would have thought that the defense would have been rested and would have played better but no 4 plays later UCLA scores the winning TD. I have to wonder if there was another injury in the defensive front 7??

Rumor is Kaufusi is hurt. Offense headed into first half early right after the first drive.

UCLA found a scheme that worked. For many of their run plays in the 4th quarter, they put 4 wideouts in the pattern. That forced us into a nickel package. So now we are playing with only 6 in the box. If their line each get one man, then its a one-on-one (at best) for us against their backs. As usual when we play a Power 5 team, only in a minority of the matchups do we win one-on-one. In this case, UCLA has really good backs. They also have a pretty good O Line that was firing off well.

So you have to take your hat off to the UCLA coaches for finding a scheme that put their best players (the backs) in a favorable situation. We can probably expect Michigan to look at running at us from the 4-wide set next week.

I feel confident that Bronco can come up with a way to counter this.

I think this is spot on. And while i am reticent to criticize the D or Bronco at all. I think that his aggrssive and creative scheming was out-schemed and out-executed, maybe even out-athleticized in that fourth quarter. Credit UCLA. I told my friend during the 3rd Q that UCLA should bag the pass and RUN! it ended up killing us.

But to the original OP opinion. By that same lagic, our O went home on the 25 yard line. And our Dr Bob gave up on the daggar that could have put UCLA away. Instead we settled for a field goal. So, bad logic, bent on blaming by the OP. Kind of an afront to the D as well.

There hasnt been a peep about BK. I surely hope he is ok. People who have inluded Travis T as our "best player" on D, do BK a disservice. But together, TT and BK present real problems for an Oline. And the others fill in/compliment nicely.

I wondered if there was an injury because the defense just wasn't the same going into the 4th quarter as they were the first 2 weeks.

Really then please explain how BYU stuffed UCLA's run all game long save for the 4 really big runs of 45 + yards which was due to a poor job of wrapping up by the defense. Sorry but UCLA's rushing stats were better than what actually happened.

BYU's Offensive play calling was equally as guilty because BYU focused to much on getting 1 yard on the 3rd down and 1 plays instead of just calling a normal offensive play. Anae went too conservative in the last 2 drives where BYU had at least 2 3rd down and 1 plays in each of the drives and would go with a dive up the middle only to have it stuffed. BYU played not to lose in the 4th quarter instead of not to win due to the fact that for the first time BYU had the lead with 5-7 minutes left to play in the game.

UCLA went hurry-up and spread, then ran the ball with their very good running backs. We were playing man, leaving two linebackers (one, if you consider blocking assignments) to tackle the ball carrier and we have been bad at tackling this season. I don't think it's fair to say that the defense "went home" or gave up, but were on the losing end of a very clever chess move. I'm no football genius, but it seems like the right situation for a zone run blitz; maybe that package wasn't ready or available for our D or maybe Bronco saw something I didn't (if Langi takes the right angle and wraps up on several plays, they don't get those big runs and TD, but he's new to defense and the arm brace doesn't help).

Yesterday on the radio Doman said that 4th quarter was Bronco's nightmare as a DC. He said Bronco's first defensive priority has always been to stop the run. And after what happened against UCLA, he won't sleep until he figures it out and gets it fixed. That was good news to me and hopefully we see results against Michigan.

So did Nebraska's and Boise State's defenses also go home early as well? Or did UCLA, like BYU, find a way to make plays to win the game? As was said, the Bruins found a matchup advantage and rode it all the way to victory.

So again spewing an opinion as fact. BYU did not stuff UCLA's run game all game long until the 4th. Perkins had 120 yds rushing in the first half, so he had more rushing yds in the first half than he did in the second half. UCLA rushed for 143 yds in the first half and totaled 184 yds through 3 quarters. That doesn't sound like stuffing the run until the 4th. Granted rushing for 115 yds in the 4th may give the impression BYU's defense played better against the run through the first 3, but in reality that is not the case. In fact UCLA rushed for 115 yds in the 1st with two 44 yd runs by Perkins which equals the same total of yds in the 4th. The only reason nobody is talking about the 1st quarter is because UCLA didn't score in the first quarter.

Here is the breakdown by quarters

1st: 115 yds 14.4 avg

2nd: 28 yds 3.5 avg

3rd: 41 yds 4.1 avg

4th: 115 yds 12.7 avg

so they did defend the run better by overall yd total in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but they still avg 3.8 yds per carry which is above avg.
S
SpiffCoug
Remove the three knees at the end of the game and UCLA ran the ball 35 times.

Here's another breakdown:

1 run of -3 yards

1 run of -1 yards

1 run of 0 yards

2 runs of 1 yard

2 runs of 2 yards

5 runs of 3 yards

6 runs of 4 yards

3 runs of 5 yards

3 runs of 6 yards

3 runs of 7 yards

1 run of 8 yards

1 run of 9 yards

1 run of 13 yards

1 run of 22 yards

1 run of 31 yards

1 run of 33 yards

2 runs of 44 yards

If you figure a good rushing team will average 4 yards a carry, UCLA had 23 of those 35 runs cover 4 or more yards.

You mean our opponent made half-time/in-game adjustments and we had no answer for it? Gee, that's never happened before.

The main difference between the 1st and 4th quarters was that UCLA decided to run the ball into the endzone in the 4th, and pass it into the endzone in the 1st. 3 TDs vs. 2 picks. And yes, one of the TDs in the 4th was a pass, but it worked because we committed more guys to blitz/stop the run. The receiver shook his man coverage with a double move post corner. Kai Nacua was the only help, and he was in the center of the field playing cover 1 because we rushed 5.

Happens all the time. Happens in every game. Happens to every team.

Against Nebraska and Boise, we had success early and late against those teams. In BOTH cases BYU coaches made the correct in-game adjustments that our opponents couldn't answer. Those teams didn't go home any more than our team went home early vs BYU.

In all three of the games, one team found a late match-up that they were able to exploit to come back from a 9- or 10-point deficit to win the game. In two of those games that team was BYU.

Yes, but it seems making game time adjustments, as well as responding to those of our opponents, has always been a weakness of this coaching staff. Bronco and Anae can draw up a good game plan but seem lost if it stops working at some point.

The ability to make game time adjustments, and respond to an opponent's, is seen in the best coaches. The ones who are called "gamers."

And yet, I just gave you TWO examples from this season - and we've only played three games - where Bronco and Anae did EXACTLY what you are complaining that they don't do. They made adjustments to the opponents' adjustments.

So by your own definition, Bronco and Anae are "gamers". At least this season.

I guess that means Bob Stoops for Oklahoma isn't a gamer because he went 8-5 last year, and BYU beat him in 09. Even though for the last 10 years he has been one of the coaches with the best winning percentage. What about Nick Saban? He has lost games, or what about I will fake a heart attack so I can go coach at Ohio St Oscar Meyer? He as well has lost games.

As Spiff pointed out, every coach makes adjustments in every game. Do all the adjustments and play calling work? Absolutely not. Do ALL coaches make mistakes? Yes. I think people are more critical of their own teams because they are fans. Remember the grass is not always greener and there are a lot of weeds that we don't see because we don't follow other teams as closely as we do our own.

I heard Colin Cowheard discuss college football coaches, and he states that coaches who have NFL coaching experience make changes quicker than most college coaches because the NFL game is quicker. Mora has NFL experience. He's a good coach.

I don't think the defense went home early...they needed just a couple of plays corrected to win the game.

CFB already removes the kneeldowns. They give the runs to the center, who receives the negative yards.

Based on this and many other threads, I have come to the conclusion that KingCoug will only be happy if KingCoug is named Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Defensive Coordinator. There is obviously no one else in the world that would come close to meeting his expectations. ;)
