I don't think this was a problem until the Edward's teams started whacking people.

Success breeds contempt.

It's also a great advantage over the guy who was playing last year, to take 4 years off from playing any organized games. It gives the "old" guy a lot of time to prepare himself mentally for when, someday, he actually gets back onto the field.
