Rooting Guide Week 3

The goals for BYU are:



1. To win the National Championship

2. To go to a NY6 bowl game

3. To achieve the highest ranking possible

4. To win as many games as possible

5. To be bowl eligible and play the best bowl team possible

6. To be better than Utah



If you want to see these goals accomplished here is your rooting guide:



A. Cheer for BYU. Duh.



BYU over UCLA



B. Cheer for the team playing Utah. Because there is no reason to cheer for Utah



Fresno St. over Utah



C. Cheer for BYU’s opponents. This helps SOS.



Boise St. over Idaho St.

Cincinnati over Miami (OH)

East Carolina over Navy

Michigan over UNLV

Nebraska over Miami

San Jose St. over Oregon St.

UConn over Missouri (The result could be good for BYU either way, but if UConn wins they could be undefeated and nationally ranked coming to Provo. Plus they add credibility for the AAC. Plus they stick it to the SEC.)

Utah St. over Washington

Wagner over Monmouth



D. Cheer for teams playing teams ranked ahead of BYU. Also, cheer for unranked teams vs. ranked teams. If both teams are ranked cheer for the team with more probable losses in their future (Of course rules A-C trump rule D).



Northern Illinois over #1 Ohio St.

#15 Mississippi over #2 Alabama (If it was November we would be cheering for Alabama, but this early we cheer for Ole Miss. Ole Miss played Fresno while Bama has no common opponents with us. A loss by Bama hurts the perception of the SEC more than a loss by Ole Miss.)

SMU over #3 TCU

Air Force over #4 Michigan St.

Stanford over #6 USC

South Carolina over #7 Georgia

#14 Georgia Tech over #8 Notre Dame (ND owes us a home game. We are in direct competition with them for a NY6/Playoff Spot)

Boston College over #9 Florida St.

Louisville over #11 Clemson

Georgia St. over #12 Oregon

#18 Auburn over #13 LSU (BYU likely passes the loser of this game anyway. Auburn seems to have a few more losses in them than LSU)

Tulsa over #16 Oklahoma

Nevada over #17 Texas A&M

Northern Arizona over #20 Arizona

Duke over #23 Northwestern

Troy over #24 Wisconsin

UTSA over #25 Oklahoma St.



E. Cheer for our Opponents’ opponents unless they are playing our opponents. This helps our SOS in virtually every SOS calculation. The more connected a team is to our opponents the more you should cheer for them (unless it violates rules A-D). For example, UNLV is the most connected team to our opponents as they play 5 games against them (UCLA, Michigan, SJSU, Fresno St., Boise St.). The number by the team indicates how connected they are. If the numbers are equal take the team who has lost or will most likely lose to our opponents.

The UConn-Missouri game is debatable. Who should we root for?

I say Missouri. If they are the SEC east champ again and don't have any losses except to BYU, our street cred will skyrocket. Not the same street cred for beating UCONN.

Agreed. the Missouri game comes at a time for us to most benefit from a victory over a ranked opponant.

I say beating a ranked Mizzou who has beaten UConn brings more cred.

If UConn beats Missouri and Navy they will likely be in the top 25 when we play them. Missouri could still be very highly ranked even losing to UConn.



I'd rather beat #25 UConn and #13 Missouri than unranked UConn and #7 Missouri.

I'd rather beat #25 UConn and #13 Missouri than unranked UConn and #7 Missouri.

Now, beyond vacuum hypothetical analysis....UConn is going to have to field another team if they want to beat Missouri and Navy or have a chance to finish the season ranked. The Huskies have very-narrow-margin home wins over FCS Villanova and pseudo-FBS Army. (Army lost to FCS Fordham at home in Week 1; Villanova beat the same Fordham team, 14-7, in week 2).



Realistically, if Missouri loses to Uconn at home, Missouri will be shamed and drop out of the top-25. UConn will be lucky to be bowl eligible, even with a miraculous win over Missouri. We want Missouri to win as many games as possible so that they continue to play the role of a legit SEC opponent and stay ranked throughout the season. We hope that UConn somehow pulls off some AAC upsets to finish bowl-eligible.

UConn lost by 3 after failing on a fake field goal, 9-6. UConn might be a tougher game than we thought.

I actually see the opposite being true: Mizzou will be an easier game than we anticipated. They barely beat Arkansas State last week (a team that lost to USC 55-6).

This was a weird game. Bob Diaco should have kicked the field goal, tied it, and go to overtime. The fake fg had no chance.



Both of these teams can, and should receive a thorough beatdown by BYU. Neither looked good today.
