What is a One-Year Mission?

I hate to start a Manti Teo thread (a pox on me, I know, I know), but I have seen this mentioned a number of places recently:



"Bob Wieneke talked to Te'o about [his mission plans]. He may take a two-year mission or a one-year mission or no mission at all. They will decide after hsi freshman season. If Te'o is gone for two years, I would expect David Posluszny to rise to the top of the depth chart. Even in the two-year scenario, I think it will work out fine. BYU does it all the time and it seems to work well for them. "



Can someone explain to me how one gets a one-year mission call? I must have missed an option on my paperwork.

IDK, only way I know how to get a "1 year" Mish, is to get sent home early...

I almost posted several inappropriate suggestions of how to get a one-year mission, but I think BYUROCKS's suggestion works.

It's the outcome of the far less popular Priesthood Session talk entitled "Lowering the Bar"

I don't think you can "sign up" for one but my Bishop's son is due to be released after one year at his option but he served a home mission. He has done more than 2,600 baptisms for the dead! Only Wilford Woodruff can boast that kind of baptismal success from his mission right?

My guess is there is a misunderstanding by the person who wrote the quote above on how missions work.

No my guess is the author was just trying to show that ANY amount of time off must be worked out. Regardless if it's 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, etc.

Except the author is stating that Manti told him he will decide between no mission, a one-year mission, or a two-year mission.

Far less popular? That's a talk I could have really gotten behind before I went on my mission!

missions are strictly voluntary, like any other calling in the Church. If someone wishes to leave after 1 year, they can.



Of course, the Church expects young men to serve for 2 years and I doubt they'd let anyone serve if they say bluntly they are only going to serve for one year.



Was someone drinking at the time the statement was made btw? That might explain some confusion. (tic)

A 1 year mission eh?? I'm interested in following this thread - I've never heard of it. There's always something new around the corner.

A one year mission-just long enough to transfer without losing a year of eligibility.

It's all irrelevant, since he's not going on one anyways. Consider his presence at ND a mission. I'm sure that's what he'll tell himself

Yeah kinda like singing is david archuletta's mission, and wasn't it Hans Olsen that said that God told him not to go on a mission, but that God wanted him to be a football player instead? Ha it's funny.

It might be best if guys like David Archuleta don't go on standard missions. I believe Donny Osmond was "asked not to" serve one. I met a lady in Corpus Christi that joined the church way back when just because of him-and that was just from her contact with him on tv.



Can you imagine the distractions to the work that would ensue if a young man like Archuleta or Miley Cyrus were to serve a mission?

Yeah, "his" companions would have a rough time sharing a bedroom with a "dude" they know used to be a really hot chick. That's one distraction you don't need every night.

Well typically, the church finds a special 2 year mission to fulfill for really popular people like David Archuletta, like Shawn Bradley spent most of his mission speaking in firesides.

I hate these threads about missions and I will say this once and not argue the point further: I find it hard, if not impossible, to believe that the Lord becomes a respecter of persons when they become more famous. EVERY worthy young man should serve a mission, regardless of money, social status, or number of preteen girls who've spit out their retainer when screaming your name.
