byucougar1Going into fall camp, one of the strengths of the team appeared to the depth of the receiving corps. There was talent at every position and it appeared that Mitch Mathews and Nick Kurtz would be the primary targets due to their size advantage over smaller DBs. What has been a surprise has been the production of Devon Blackmon and Mitchell Juergens. Others that have contributed include: Terenn Houk, Colby Pearson, Moroni Laulu-Pututau and Kurt Henderson. Trey Dye has yet to catch a pass.

It appears to me, that when teams have doubled on Mathews, Blackmon and Juergens have made the other teams pay. Four of the receivers longest catches have been for over 40 yards, Juergens and Kurtz are averaging over 24 yards/catch, while Juergens and Mathews have both found the endzone twice. I like the fact that the ball is being spread around to a number of WRs and that the QB doesn't have to depend on just one player as in years past (i.e. Hoffman).
With respect to the QB situation, the statistic that pops out is the QB rating of Mangum and Hill when he was playing - both were over 130. As seems to be the case at BYU, when the QB play is very good, coupled with a strong D, good things happen. The long ball is definitely back, and I believe that as TM continues to improve on his short to mid-routes, the opposition will struggle to key on anyone player.

With respect to the run game, there wasn't much present during the NE (outside of Taysom), but Hine started to show some real promise in the 4th Q vs BSU. Not sure what contributed to the production (e.g. the OL's strength and conditioning wearing down the BSU D with constant pounding, confidence and aggressive running by Hine, or increased utilization of the TE much more in helping with blocking.

With continued progress in both the run game and passing game, and the D creating turnovers, a special season could be in the making. This season definitely has a different feel to it, the play of the D is much improved and keeps the team in the game until the O can get rolling, and the O seems to be able to make big plays when it's crunch time.
