Pluses

Besides the obvious magnum Miracle II and Juergens career night and Nacua's hat trick, here are a few other pluses to observe. For 3 plus quarters BSU's run defense stuffed us. Then Hine starting breaking into the secondary. He had holes to work with and ran very hard. It seemed like we started winning the LOS. Better conditioning? What changed? It was awesome to see.



Our run defense was actually better than BSU's and this without Tuiloma.



I thought Harvey Langi played a very strong game. Is it me or does he seem to keep getting better?



The white out looked awesome on TV



The fourth quarter salute to Taysom by the student body was real class



Blackmon's catch in the end zone was insane! I could not see the penalty and we ended up scoring anyways but what a catch



Hine ran with authority in the mid third quarter on. He looked very good.



Very few penalties. Takitaki's for a time looked like a killer, but the team played very penalty free.

Tuni Kanuch came in to play RG during the second half, and he played like his hair was on fire. I think he was the primary reason the run game came alive late.

It looked like Hine had holes to run through early on, but kept missing them. Maybe a combination of better control of the LOS and better vision by Hine? He also seemed to go down really easy in the first half and somehow broke more tackles later on.

Also, what's up with Algie Brown? He does not seem like himself so far this year; a dropped pass in each game and a fumble this game. He did start to bull through contact a couple times later in the game, so maybe he's getting back into his groove.

Other pluses:



Defense got better and better as the game went on. By the end I had confidence giving the ball back to BSU because you could sense our D would stop them.



Mangum seeming to improve as the game goes on. It will be fun to watch him develop from week to week.



We actually tried a trick play with the jeer gens pass. Didn't work and he threw into double coverage, but I like that we actually tried it.

I hated the trick play. We had 2nd and 1, and needed to score every possession to take the lead. If you're going to take a shot, take it with the guy who practices doing so every day. Don't increase the turnover risk. We were lucky it wasn't picked, because that would have ended things.

Bronco stated the dline was moving and so our guys were missing their block or doing the wrong assignment. At halftime they coached them on what to do about the movement and it looks like it took about half of the third quarter to make the adjustments. From then on they opened up holes for the RBs.

That can't possibly be true. I've read here time and time again that Bronco makes zero in-game adjustments ;)

Kind of weird however, that it even took 3 quarters to figure out the Dlie shift. Its not like its some brnd new scheme, never before seen.

THere has been far more criticism of Anae not adjusting than Bronco. In fact, what hasnt been mentioned much and deserves its own thread was the brillaince of Broncos scheme and blitz pattern. There were multiple plays where there was only one Dlinemen in....BK....and at times when he wasnt even in a 3 point stance. that was feaking amazing. Little Warner and his dad were in attendance--i hope he loved what he saw--a very dynamic D and a D backfield (Little Warner is a safety) who lit it up in Nacua.

I liked the trick play, it didn't work but it gives dcoordinators something to think about. If it had worked Anae would be praised as a genius. The reason Mangum looked better as the game went on is because the running game started working as the game went on and took pressure off of him. We really need to get the running game going and his progression will increase exponentially. When Heaps was learning in 10 we had BK and JJ Diluigi who were running really hard for him. BYU was running for 200 yards per game using running backs alone that year and really helped Heaps out. We need that for Mangum right now. The Oline needs to get their run blocking figured out. Having said that Mangum is going to be special. The kid has something we haven't seen for a long time at that position, he is able to make huge plays out of bad situations with his arm. Thill did the same thing with his legs, but not with his arm. That TD pass he threw on the 3rd play was 60 yards in the air and dropped into a bucket. The receiver didn't even have to slow down, caught it in stride and strolled into the end zone.

Another Plus... Tejan Koroma. This dude is sick. If you recorded the game go back and watch him, at least in the second half, he was all over the place. On pass blocking a lot of the time he would block his own guy and then peel off and block the next guy coming in taking out two defenders. On run plays he would get into the next level and blow up a line backer or DB. He is also the one that ripped off the helmet of the D-lineman that got the personal foul for continuing to play without his helmet.

Not to be a negative nelly, but I also saw him let a guy run right by him while he was going to the second level to put a hit on those LBs. I also saw the offensive line double team the same guy which resulted in another slipping by untouched. Those plays resulted in TFLs. Our Oline needs to learn to take care of the initial rushers first before moving to the second level.
