I'm a believer. This kid has ice water in his veins. I can't believe he did that 2 weeks in a row. 8)

Just barely turned 22 years old and he keeps that kind of composure in a huge game?!

Within reason though. All his balls were thrown in a way to give his own receivers a shot to get the ball. Even the interception he had early, it was in a place where Kurtz could have caught it if he had gone for the ball.

I agree but would add rhat we might want to supplement that a Bronco led defense that so far so far is playing well enough to allow for the magic to happen. We had huge stops last night when we needed them

I actually give most of the credit to our receivers. We have a REALLY GOOD bunch of receivers and if given the chance to make a play, they usually will.



Mangum's going to be great, but he's got some learning and growing to do. But, we'll be in any game this season thanks to our receivers and defense.

Tanner's arm is just outstanding. On that first long bomb he chucks it darn near 60 yards in the air while off balance and on the run and drops it right in the bread basket, hitting Juergens in stride.



Yes, BSU fell asleep on the coverage, but it still took an incredible throw for that TD to happen

I have to agree. Blackmon had an amazing catch called back on a sketchy call and last week Houk had an amazing catch for a first down.

I love Mangum and he's amazing for a Freshman, but I think it's good to see what he's accomplishing (still incredible) with some perspective. He's going to struggle here and there this year, which is likely going to result in losses. Still, I think we're going to win a lot of games this year and a lot more in the future!

And yeah, he definitely has IT. That means a lot.

He isn't perfect by any stretch but he is a baller, that was my point. Frankly, I feel the offense struggled more because they had no running game in the first 3 quarters more so than Mangum's play. Once the running game got going, the rest of the offense looked much better.

One thing that's getting a little bit overlooked is that a freshman QB in his first start completed 61% of his passes. His PER was 162.7.



For a freshman off his mission 3 months, this is insane!

While my post was mostly tic, it's also the reality. Mangum's big plays come on broken plays where he scrambles around for 4+ seconds, rolls to the right, and heaves the ball. He had at least four of those completions against BSU (one, the TD to Blackmon was called back), and without those four completions, BYU doesn't sniff the win.



However, Mangum also threw two picks and took 4 sacks. One of the picks and at least three of the sacks could have been avoided by "making the smart play" and throwing the ball out-of-bounds when the pocket breaks down. But Mangum is wired to scramble and prolong the play---I don't know that he's ever thrown a ball away.



That's the gunslinger's conundrum. T-Main keeps plays alive and keeps his eyes downfield until coverages break down and he finds the forgotten man. When he does that, BYU gets big chunks of yardage and TDs. When the defense gets to him first, BYU takes a 10+ yard sack or he rushes his throw. So, if you coach him to "be smarter" and throw it away, you aren't going to get as many big plays if he gives up on the play a second earlier, but if he never throws it away, BYU is going to be giving up a lot of coverage sacks and he's going to throw picks and the other offense is going to have favorable field position all night.



UCLA will be a big test. Now that the Hail Mary is not a one-time fluke on film, but instead one of five or so plays in the same vein, we get to see how Mangum performs against a very good defense whose #1 goal this week will be "Do NOT let the qb roll out to his right."

Yes, but don't forget that BSU defense is very good and the strength of their team. So it's not like BYU hasn't seen good Ds yet. The problem is UCLAs O is probably better to much better than both BSU and Neb.

I thought I saw a Tweet from Austin Collie saying that Tanner must have served two missions for his back-to-back "magic happens" moments!!

He was co-mvp with the number one draft pick this year in the elite-11 QB camp. I think it was there all along, he is just now getting to do it. Imagine if only Taysom could have learned to be a better pocket passer, and then used his wheels just a bit less often. Wow. But Mangum seems to be the real deal.
