Will Tanner have more victories than Max Hall?

I think Tanner has an excellant chance to have more BYU victories as a starter than Max Hall. What do you say?

In all honesty, if he stays healthy, he has a chance at every passing record in the books. Just like Jake Heaps. Time will tell.

4 years ago I'd have sworn that Taysom would break the Max Hall victory record.

Tanner only needs to average 8 wins a year for 4 years to tie the record. Health is the big factor.

If he does than he will go down as probably BYU's greatest QB. He will be playing a much tougher schedule than Max did and if he does play that well he may not stay around for 4 years.

If he's winning 8-9 games per year against the schedules built for 2015 2016, 2017, he won't stick around for 2018 as he'll already be 25 years old.

He'll still win more games than Kevin Feterik (BTW, that guy's a total douchebag).

This is so putting the cart before the horse. We gotta see how he does this year before anything possibilities could be explored.

So Tanner has 7 victories as a starter. Is that a freshman record?

Depends if you count Heaps as a co-starter against Washington his freshman season. Riley Nelson did take the first snaps in that game, but they rotated possessions. If you count that gamef or Heaps, then Jake had 7 wins. If you don't he only had six.



Personally, I count that game as a start and a win for Heaps, because they were listed as co-starters on the depth chart. Conversely, the following week against Air Force, I don't count as a start or a loss for Heaps, even though they were still co-starters . Heaps only played one or two series.



And in 2011, I count the Utah State as a start, but I don't credit him with a win that game as we were losing when he was benched.

Either way you count it, Tanner Mangum is the best true freshman quarterback at BYU. You could even convince me that he is the best freshman quarterback (true or redshirt).



I'm of the personal belief that he is the most talented quarterback at BYU since at least Ty Detmer. And that should he decide to play four seasons at BYU (and stay healthy) he will leave Provo as one of the three best quarterbacks. He will own the records for completions, yards, touchdowns and wins.



By the time he leaves BYU the debate will be, do you rank Tanner Mangum, Jim McMahon or Ty Detmer as the best quarterback ever. With no wrong answer.

Even with bowl stats counting and an extra game per season, Mangum will have a hard time catching Ty in TDs and yards. Ty had 15,031 yards and 121 TDs, not counting bowl stats. Assuming a guy plays the maximum possible number of games (52) in a 4 year span, he has to average 289 yards / game and 2.3 TDs / game.



Tanner 2778 yards, 17 TDs, and a maximum of 41 possible games remaining in his career. To break Ty's records, he'll need to average 299 yards per game and 2.5 TDs / game. So, we can see he's already slipping behind the pace. Why? Well, we're not trying to win a bunch of shootouts like Detmer was because he had no defense to help him out, and we (probably) will have some run/pass balance to help Tanner out on offense. And we're not chucking it deep as often. Ty averaged 9.82 yards per attempt, Tanner is averaging 7.72. A lot of Detmer's yards didn't come on the prototypical fly route; it'd be a TE up the seam of the zone or a RB on a circle route. The defenses we'll be playing against these days will be a lot less likely to have busted coverages or allow our tall-but-not-blazing-fast WRs to get a lot of YAC.



I hope he does break these records. I hope he breaks every passing record on the books. But the way our offense and the game in general has changed in 25 years does not bode well for his prospects there.
